“I wish you had a better relationship with breakfast” is a commonly-expressed sentiment from by my husband.  I don’t know if my body simply has become intolerant of pre-noon meals or if I am just bored of the selection of breakfast-approved foodstuffs.  But, I do know myself, and asking me to consume more than a piece of fruit for breakfast (with a rare Benedict exception) isn’t realistic. This next Call wants to know if you know yourself.  Take a look…

“IF the ancient Greeks implored us to ‘know thyself’ and common knowledge assures us that ‘a picture is worth a thousands words’, doesn’t it follow that the amalgamation of random know-nothing’s collectively called ‘the human race’ should be CONSTANTLY photographing themselves in an effort to gain true wisdom and artistic insight? It should! And also because it’s just plain insanely inventive to do so!” — from 1650 Gallery

Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats.  But you know what really makes me think of the beach?  Muffulettas.  They are the perfect “sea-food”, like an antipasto sandwich with olives and peppers, meats and cheeses all marinated and compressed in a hollowed out crusty loaf or round.  An entire meal in a handful that doesn’t get stale or mushy.  This next Call wants to know about your sea experience.  Take a look…

SWEET streets

Have you ever attended a fast food wedding?  I kinda have.  At a recent wedding, the bride & groom opted for an outdoor ceremony & reception.  The reception was catered… by a sweet food truck featuring a custom French menu including pastries in lieu of a wedding cake.  It was priceless.  They met in Paris; they fell in love under a lamppost, street food in hand.  Sweet & from the street, just like this next call. “Ahh, the street. That intoxicating cocktail of humanity. They come in all shapes and sizes, from the majesty of New York’s Fifth Ave or the Champ de Elysee to the humblest backstreet and alley. Some have seen better days, like the ghost towns of Highway 61, and some are teeming with the kaleidoscope of humanity. But whether they are asphalt or cobblestone, made of dirt or even water, every street tells a story.” — from 1650 Gallery

CALL for ENTRIES: Girls, Girls, Girls!

Learn more about the Girls, Girls, Girls!girly GREENS

The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing.  Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts.  Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food.  I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress.  My husband agrees.  And while salad may not be all about the girls, this Call is. My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors.  My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets.  There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows.  I am moving to an all new, albeit all tiny, space in 12 to 18 months, and all the kitchen storage will be open.  All light and no shadows for me.  This Call, however, wants both your light AND your shadows.  Take a look…

“The beauty of light never fails to inspire. It comes in many colors and styles, from the soft monochrome palette of the pre-dawn to the raging intensity of Times Square at midnight. Light can dazzle, light can seduce; light can be so intoxicating many spend hours attempting to capture its essence inside a tiny light-tight box otherwise known as a “camera.” Whether the photographer chooses color or black and white, the expression and compression of the wonder of light from our daily world onto a 2d piece of paper in a compelling way remains both the Nirvana and the great white whale of all photographers past, present and future. Studious professional photo-geek Ansel Adams identified 10 distinct “zones” of light from pitch black to pure light in an attempt to tame the photo beast; in his wake countless lives have been dedicated to the artistic pursuit of these 10 expressions of luminosity” — from 1650 Gallery

My toaster died.  I have had the same retro-styled, chrome toaster for 10+ years.  Who knew they lasted that long? It operated perfectly until about a year ago when it just quit toasting anything evenly.  I should probably have been sad to lose my faithful little toaster that could.  But, I hated it.  It was cool for about the first 15 minutes I owned it –before the finish began to reflect every stray speck in my kitchen.  My mother decided a red and toaster, far less reflective, would make the perfect gift.  We played, Mom.  This next call highlights all that is good about reflections.  Take a look…

Ah, the mysterious world of the insect.  Some are cute and cuddly, like the furry caterpillar.  Some are fierce and scary, wearing their skeletons on the outside to frighten us.  Some are artistic and majestic like the beautiful butterfly. And some are just downright romantic, like the firefly on a warm summer evening.

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own.  Like humans, bugs are everywhere!  So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly!  Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

The Portrait

Great portraiture such as that produced by Dorothea Lange, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Matthew Brady, Peter Hujar and Diane Arbus comprise one of the main pillars of the Pantheon of photographic arts.

The challenge of capturing the personality behind the person requires both technical know-how and an artist’s eye, combining technique, intuition and empathy. When done right, the unseen power of persona comes into focus and, as if by magic — personality seems to jump from the page. This month 1650 Gallery tips our hat to the power of people pictures, and welcomes your work in the blockbuster genre of photographic portraiture.
