THEME: The unifying theme of the exhibition will be the color red.

ENTRY FEE: None

AWARD: A $1000 honorarium will be offered to each selected artist/artist team per-block (8 blocks in total). Artist(s) will be selected by block, allowing for up to eight artists’ work to be selected. Each light pole will have two banners hung on it, allowing for each artist to have 6-10 images on display per-block, depending on the block. Each printed vinyl banner will be 18 inches wide by 60 inches tall, with double sided printing.

This current work is an attempt to recreate some of those childhood characters and to interact with them both as an artist and as a woman.” —Yana Goldfine

The experiences of our childhood help shape us –for the good or for the bad, often both. But for me, my childhood was a strange place, disconnected from whom I chose to become as an adult. Any time I am met face to face with an artifact of my youngest years, it gives me pause. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, sculptor Yana Goldfine is on a journey to revisit her own artifacts. Farmers markets are changing. They used to be the place to find great fresh produce and unique varietals of mushrooms and herbs. I love the smell of fresh dirt on fresh food in the summer heat of my car with the windows rolled down. But things change. Evolution is as necessary as preservation is. It doesn’t mean that dirt on the veggies has no place, it simply means squeaky-clean hydroponic lettuce, artisinal soft drinks & ready-made gazpacho should be just as welcome. MEDIA: Open to all media that can be represented on a 2D banner.

THEME: Work that resembles, echoes, and/or mimics the geological to explore our ever-evolving scientific and technological landscape. The project’s objective is to create an outdoor gallery experience, which echoes the exhibition within the UAG creating a platform to explore ontological responses to spirituality, technology, and anthropogenic geological concerns of preservation in relation to the natural environment.

DEADLINE: August 22, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $20 for 3 to 5 images

JURORS: Marisa Sage, Curator of “GEOMAGIC” and Director of the UAG, the UAG Exhibition Review Board, & Julia Barello, Academic Department Head of the NMSU Department of Art

AWARDS: Up to 6 artists whose work will be reproduced onto high-quality outdoor banners and hung on the banner systems installed on the outer walls of D.W. Williams Hall. This is an exciting opportunity to have thousands of viewers see your work as they drive off of interstate 10 or 25 down University Avenue past the campus of New Mexico State University. ARTIST of the DAY: Felicia Olin

“. . . A family friend placed me into a basin of water and rose pedals and said ‘This is a felicitous experience’ and I was named Felicia Suzanne. Unlike my sister, who was saying words before she was one, I rarely spoke. My father remembers being surprised when I had my first conversation with him when I was 5 or 6. My early communication mostly consisted of funny noises and the slamming of doors.” —Felicia Olin

A strategy for selling art is floating around that suggests that it is how interesting the artist seems, as opposed to their work, that sells work. And several artists, gallerists & dealers have confirmed with me that when you talk to a collector about the work they buy, they almost always talk about the artists, not the art. Interesting notion. Social media already makes it possible for people to create a persona that fulfills any role they choose to put out into the world. Does selling art mean that we now have to invent new artistic personas for buyers to parallel those romanticized versions we already paint for our alumni publications and holiday newsletters? It is all too much some days.

I read the bio of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Felicia Olin, before I saw her work. I was so enamored of the way she put herself out into the world, that I wanted to like her work. And, I do. I have a soft spot for portraiture and texture. I also appreciate less “artspeak” in favor of “realspeak”. I am entertained by the menagerie of characters created –stories easily inhabiting the shadowed corners of our dreams. Intrigued, I am, by both the art and the truth which she speaks about herself and her work.

Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats. But you know what really makes me think of the beach? Muffulettas. They are the perfect “sea-food”, like an antipasto sandwich with olives and peppers, meats and cheeses all marinated and compressed in a hollowed out crusty loaf or round. Parsnips make me itchy. My family eats copious amount of root vegetables –carrots and turnips and beets. But the carrot’s paler cousin makes me feel like I have rolled in fiberglass insulation. Parsnips are easy to cultivate & fetch a higher price than carrots at local farmers markets. I have a friend that grows them because she never has any waste. They last forever, but even if they start to get overripe, they are a favorite treat of her retired work horse. The theme of THE FL3TCH3R EXHIBIT is focused on work with strong social and political content. Work entered in the exhibit should reflect current issues that affect contemporary culture and investigate societal and political concerns. Diverse media and approach to the theme are encouraged.

JUROR: Dr. Eric Avery is a celebrated printmaker and recently-retired physician who for decades has practiced medicine and art in tandem. His complexly layered work connects issues of printmaking and art history with social concerns of public health, human rights abuse and responses to HIV/AIDS, death, sexuality and the body. Creating powerful historical records of experience with patients, he changes the ordinary role of a doctor into an artist inspired by healing, fusing the space between art and medicine. Before his retirement, he was clinical associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and member of the Institute for Medical Humanities, The University of Texas Medical Branch, specializing in issues related to HIV/AIDS. In addition to being the subject of numerous gallery exhibitions, Avery’s work is found in many prestigious permanent collections.

“This series of paintings was inspired by a 1968 photograph by Ernest Withers of marchers during the Memphis sanitation workers March. Martin Luther King was assassinated while there in support of the March. The men carried signs which read ‘I am a Man’. I found it fascinating that the the phrase I grew up with was ‘I am THE Man’. The collective statement became individualistic in the age of integration. Reflecting on American history I wanted to riff and remix the text, ultimately ending with the revelation ‘I Am. Amen.’ MLK showed us that our greatest gift is our consciousness and it is up to us what we choose to do with it.” —Hank Willis Thomas

I implore you to listen. Listen. Understand your privilege, whatever it may be. Being defensive doesn’t serve you. Don’t just look at people; SEE them. Love people for their humanity — both strengths & flaws. Respect the space each person needs to work and speak and react to community in which they live. Recognize that people have the right to be who they are, regardless of, and even in spite of, your expectation of them. I am inspired by the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Hank Willis Thomas. You can change the world. Start with you.
