Just Desserts: A personal note.

Just Desserts -- a personal note from Rachel at AAAD!

Yesterday, my husband stood under the open hatch of our car with nitrile gloves wiping down our groceries with disinfectant before they entered the house the way a Southerner would clean-hand-dirty-hand the breading of fried chicken.  Surreal. Covid-19 has touched all of our lives by now.

My husband lost his job in recent days, so I am grateful to HAVE groceries.  I am grateful to have the option to stay home and complete creative work and commissions to keep my mind occupied while so many are fighting to get well or stay well.  Productive distraction has always been a mental health tool for me, and I hope it is working for you.

With so many of us unsure of what lies ahead, it is hard to plan for the future or even find the motivation to want to do any hopeful planning.  But today, I did.  Today I applied for an artist residency… in Italy.  I did it for me, and I did it in honor of all the galleries and arts agencies that have to keep planning for a future that they can’t currently clearly see. I see you. I hear you.  My heart is full for you.

As for AAAD, because my own practice has been growing, I have not tended this site and the weeds are knee-high. I had plans to transition this site over the next year and a half, but it seems like the time to say goodbye is now.  In 2009, this site began as a convenient way to catalog “safe” calls from trusted people and places.  Along the way, I met the best people, made wonderful friends, shared ridiculous food segues and made connections that will last a lifetime.  I will miss talking to you regularly, or even irregularly.

Fine Print details:

  • I have enabled comments on this post, which in this time of trolls and bots is uncommon for me to do, so feel free to leave a note.
  • The site will remain in place for a while and will eventually auto-forward to my personal website
  • If you want to screenshot a feature of your work, your agency or anything else, the search bar is still in the sidebar even though the pages are not on the navigation menu.  If you need help finding something, contact me, and I will help.
  • If you feel you are owed something by this site, please feel free to contact me so that I can make it right.
  • I added a contact page with all my personal contact info.
  • Social media sites for this page will go dark by (May 1, 2020), but feel free to contact me personally.
  • I will completely delete the mailing list (by May 1, 2020) for this website from the subscription feed to prevent any pirating of email addresses in my absence.

You deserve the very best.  Be kind to yourselves, and may you all get your just desserts, artistically & edibly.  Love always, Rachel (R.L. Gibson)

My diet has been less than ideal for the past month.  I’ve been stress eating all the cheese and fried food I can get my hands on lately, and surprise, I’m feelin’ kinda crappy.  I started this week on a positive note though.  I’m turning over a new leaf this week, well lots of new leaves — spinach leaves, among other foods that support health and uplift my mood.  Hopefully the tide will turn on the “yucks”.  This next Call is looking for work to put in an uplifting position, in a literal sense.  Take a look…

Recipes are sort of like guide books for me.  I have no interest in doing exactly what they say, but they are a great jumping-off point.  There are exceptions, thousands of them.  See “baking”.  Baking is a science.  Baklava, croissant, sourdough, layer cakes–making them is either complicated or at the very least time-consuming, but the pay off is HUGE.  This next Call is like that.  There are a LOT of details, so read the prospectus in full, but the pay of is huge.  First prize is $120,000, and it isn’t limited to representational work.  Take a look at this one…

EGGPLANT

My kiddo just turned 16.  For his birthday, he didn’t ask for pizza or burgers; he wanted Indian food.  So proud.  Since his palate took a huge left turn a couple of years ago, eating out with him has been a voyage of firsts.  The first taste of Baingan ka Bharta (a spicy mash of eggplant & tomatoes) & Goat Korma were adorable.  And hopeful.  Finally I can rest knowing that I might have put another foodie out into the world that is willing to eat adventurously.  This next Call could be a first opportunity for you at the first show for this gallery.  Investigate…

I’ve become a casual fan of Naked & Afraid (the TV show).  When flipping through the channels, I keep tripping across the reruns.  For those of you non-watchers.  Two people (1 man, 1 woman) that have never met who are dropped in a remote location for 21 days with nothing–not even clothes. I am dumbfounded by what they will eat.  If you’re hungry enough, I supposes giant crickets (maybe it was a grasshopper) look delicious.  Bizarre.  Here’s a Call for all things bizarre.  Maybe even crickets…

SUNNY SIDE UP

Don’t throw tomatoes.  I never search my own blog history before I write these segues.  So unknown to me, I might be contradicting/repeating myself, but I am always being sincere–I swear.  Having said that, I remember having written about this topic many times.  That’s right, it is time for what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food.  This week, I’m thinking I would be an egg.  Really.  They are ultimate in adaptive foods.  They are in everything from cookies to lasagna.  My family OF THREE now eats approximately 3 dozen a week.  Really.  This episode of what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food was brought to you be this self-portrait Call–the ultimate what-would-I-be-if-I-had-only-one-shot-to-show-the-world experience.  Enough hyphens; I digress…

Social, cultural, political, gender, age and sexual orientation are part of our identities as individuals. Each of these elements play a part in how we identify within various constructs such as family, workforce, community and greater society.

The aim of this exhibition is to feature self-portraits that best depict our own individual identity and the ability to be a camellia of uniqueness or to fit within the statuesque.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Must be 8” x 10”. No landscapes orientations accepted. B&W or color photography, digital photography or illustrations, and photos or scanned replications of drawings, paintings or sculptures. Self-portraits will not be returned; do not submit original prints/artwork.

May 1, 2014

NOTIFICATION:  “All artists will be featured. Artists are welcome to submit as many self-portraits as they wish; however, the gallery can only guarantee a minimum of six photos per artist will be displayed. If space permits, more photos will be used from each submitting artist.” — quoted from from the Me, Myself & I prospectus

ENTRY FEE:  No fee to enter

SALES:  Artwork will not be sold. (or returned)

Editor’s Note:  According the prospectus, this is a National Juried exhibit; however, it also claims to be open to ANY artist, and no juror is listed.  The quote above indicates it is a form of all-hung show.  So, my guess is it is only juried for awards.  However, the awards are not defined in the prospectus either.  Normally I wouldn’t publish a Call without getting all of these questions answered…but I  HAVE shown at this gallery myself and it was a FANTASTIC experience.  If you’re looking for a line on your resume, this is a great academic gallery with an historically great curatorial vision.

I prefer thought-out, composed meals with true intention.  But, let’s face it…that doesn’t always happen.  Today, my lunch included two olive & cream cheese stuffed pieces of celery, a deviled egg, a pickled beet, two slices of fresh tomato and two pickles. The only thing composed was the beautiful square plate.  Truly, it was a collage of anything I could find that didn’t have to be cooked.  This next Call wants your collage, AND they want it square.  Whatcha think about that?
