Today I spied organic alphabet soup in the grocery store. There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words. And, I don’t believe anyone is REALLY teaching their children to read with soup. So do we really need to communicate with food, literally, or am I just a huge hypocrite for constantly preach about the transformative & communicative power of food? Okay, I’m a hypocrite, ha. JUROR: Monika Szewczyk divides her time between writing, editing, curating and teaching. From 2008 to 2012, she was head of publications at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam.

Szewczyk was on the curatorial team of the Vancouver Art Gallery and coordinated programming at the Belkin Satellite, a space of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia. She is Visual Arts Program Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago.

Food deprivation is not new to me. In the South, women are born dieters, as was I for half my years. I no longer participate, opting for whole foods and a healthier self image. But, I was still dumbfounded when I read a study that proposes eating from a red dish, as opposed to the white ones I currently use, might result in smaller consumption. Human beings are a curious sort aren’t we? Maybe it is the association with stop signs and traffic lights. Who knows? I’m on the lookout for a horned melon aka an African cucumber. I tried one many years ago and remember the flavors of lemon, banana and cucumber, but because they are exceedingly rare, I can’t find one locally. 3×3 Magazine is entering its ninth year judging the world’s best contemporary illustration judged by some of the world’s top art directors, designers and illustrators.

Unlike many shows they have no boundaries, their entrants come from every part of the globe. They are still one of the best values around when it comes to entry fees and publication fees. And they continue to improve their entry process.

And unlike most show annuals that are on the bookshelves 3×3 Magazine’s annuals are prominently displayed on the newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where they are affordable to art directors and art buyers who may or may not be interested in illustration. There has been dramatic growth in the number of outlets stocking the 3×3 Magazine annual and the sales to art directors.

It is their mission to demonstrate the benefits of using illustration, this annual is their showcase.

Butcher is a master at portraying emotional and spiritual content as visual compositions. In his paintings he explores space, light and subject matter as metaphors in a dialog.

Claudia Seymour is a masterful still life painter in oil and pastel. She is a member of prestigious organizations such as Allied Artist of America, CT Pastel Society, and Audobon Artists. Claudia is an experienced juror and an active member of the art community. She has served as president of the Salmagundi Club in New York City for the past six years. She has exhibited in over 150 juried national and international exhibitions.

AWARDS: Over $3000 in cash awards

Growing up, meat was the focal point of all meal preparation. Everything revolved around how long the meatloaf, turkey, fried chicken etc. had to cook. Every plate had to be picture perfect–1/2 meat (it is the South afterall), 1/4 starch (usually potatoes), 1/4 vegetable (often fried). JUROR: Melanie Craven has exhibited her photographic work both in the United States and abroad. She was first published in Hayen’s Ferry Review in 2003 with her Identical Otherness series that she continues to work on in collaboration with her identical twin Michelle. In 2006 she was included in Collotype Past, Present and Future in conjunction with the exhibition at The Foyer Gallery at the Center for Fine Print Research in Bristol, England. Recently, her work was included in Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes. Over a decade ago Melanie Craven and her sister Michelle founded Tilt Gallery. And in 2012 with nearly a 100 exhibitions under her belt, Melanie Craven moved Tilt from its home in Phoenix to the Arts District in Old Town Scottsdale. In Tilts new location Craven continues to offer individual artist exhibitions, juried and group shows and serves the local art community.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. The Kiernan Gallery DOES have incentive to sell your work. They believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

I prefer thought-out, composed meals with true intention. But, let’s face it…that doesn’t always happen. Today, my lunch included two olive & cream cheese stuffed pieces of celery, a deviled egg, a pickled beet, two slices of fresh tomato and two pickles.
