I am fascinated by small food & small restaurants. There is something special about the smallest of goodies served in the smallest of places. One automatically assumes great care has been taken because you have less real estate literally & figuratively to make an impression. Sel et Gras in NYC was always on my list to try, but I heard it closed. Do you have any suggestions I should try? I suggest you take part in this next study in tiny art. This could be a good opportunity for some of you.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Open to all artwork no larger than 5″ x 5″ x 7″. (*Editor’s Note: This is an ideal call for artists needing an extra line on their resume that happen to work on paper or any other lightweight, easily mailable media.)

DEADLINE: Arrive by January 29-31, 2015.

NOTIFICATION: All hung. However, the staff has the right to reject any work for work sized wrong or inappropriate subject matter.

ENTRY FEE: None

SALES: Work must be priced at either $5 or $10. If the “juried” box is checked on the inventory sheet, the work may be juried and MAY be repriced to be $25 or $50 by Emerge Gallery. 50% commission will go to the Pitt County Arts Council (Greenville, NC); however, they would also appreciate any additional support through a complete sale donation if the artist so chooses.

Living off the land is labor-intensive & complicated. As my husband I began planning for gardening our own little plot of land, my head swims with seed varieties, planting schedules, crop rotation, organic pest control, bee pollination & seed preservation. The advantages of having an agricultural degree is all too clear now. And then there is the livestock–goats and sheep and chickens. Farm country looks a little less serene to me now when they whiz past my window on car trips. But when I fall asleep, I still dream of fresh beets, cabbage & carrots. Wrong–I know. Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents. As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment. My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig. Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers. I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations. They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon. The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2015. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Stefanie Gerber Darr, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists 18+ living in the US

MEDIA: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) & 3-D (sculpture of all media).

DEADLINE: December 7, 2014

NOTIFICATION: Mailed December 22, 2014

JUROR: Stefanie Gerber Darr combines her training as a museum educator, curator, collections manager and artist to develop meaningful experiences for people with art. Whether organizing public programs, curating exhibitions or teaching workshops, she dives into the project to create moments that stimulate the visual and offer reflection on social and cultural topics.

Darr currently manages the galleries and permanent collection at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and is focusing on raising the awareness of the school’s past, present and future.

City life means access to international food. I’m meant to live in the country. It is just the way I am wired. My town has a population of approximately 3500 people. The downside? JUROR: Lynda Schlosberg is a Boston-based abstract artist who creates intricate and process-oriented paintings that are constructed using a series of interwoven layers of meticulous repeating patterns of dots, dashes, and grids using highly saturated, vibrant and illusory colors. It is through her skillful utilization of color theory and pattern that she constructs spatial illusions that expand and recede simultaneously, when viewed, fully exercise the mind and the eye.

Schlosberg received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, and her BFA from Ohio University College of Art. She is represented by Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland, ME and by Kingston Gallery in Boston. She has recently partnered with the non-profit Art in Giving. She maintains a studio in Waltham, MA.

SALES: All proceeds from art sales go to the artist. Gallery 263 acts as the liaison between the artist and any parties interested in purchasing artwork. However, they do suggest a 30% donation to the gallery from any sales made.

I never thought about what astronauts ate when I was little, but I was disturbed that all they had to drink was Tang–or so I thought, ha. Gone are the days of strictly canned or freeze-dried foods in space. Now, those travelers have fresh fruits, vegetables and even waffles and scones. But, I think being faced with irradiated meat might make me a vegetarian in short order. This next Call contemplates the entirety of the cosmos, not just the menu. Investigate!
