With portion sizes growing to gargantuan extremes, I find myself more and more attracted to small plates. I appreciate variety over quantity. I have come to expect more creativity and taste from a tasting portion. I like the attention to detail–from flavor to plating. This next Call wants your best small work too. JURORS: Sharon Arnold is the co-owner & Director of Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, WA. She studied at Pratt Institute in NY & graduated from Cornish College of the Arts, focusing on sculpture, art history & philosophy. She launched Bridge Productions, a publication company focusing on artist catalogues, literary chapbooks, and a quarterly subscription project; and founded LxWxH Gallery located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle before coming on as partner at Roq La Rue in 2014. Jerry Beck is an artist, educator, and community leader. He is the Founder/Artistic Director of The Revolving Museum (TRM) a nomad arts organization that revitalizes underutilized public space with interdisciplinary and collaborative art. Beck has a BFA from Florida State University & a MFA from Tufts University-School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

AWARDS: Each accepted entry will be featured in a fully illustrated, handbound, hardcover catalogue of the exhibit. Each accepted artist will receive one copy of the catalogue. Cash prizes are allocated by the jurors.

I will put salt & pepper on anything. Years of deliberate pause has taught me that not all things need salt, but it has been a hard lesson to learn. I have super-low blood pressure (70 over 40, no really), and my doctor surmises that I just self-medicate with salt. Who knows? Changing from the black & white of salt and pepper to the pink of Himalayian salt and red/green of whole peppercorns in grinders really helped me break the habit. JUROR: Christiane Paul is Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she has curated several exhibitions, including Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools (2011), Profiling (2007), Data Dynamics (2001) and the net art selection for the 2002 Whitney Biennial, as well as artport, the Whitney Museum’s website devoted to Internet art. Dr. Paul is Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School in New York City.

AWARDS: BEST of SHOW GOLD: $1000 – At the Opening Reception, the artist whose work is juried as ‘Best of Show’ by Christiane Paul will receive a $1000 cash prize. ‘Best of Show Silver’ will receive a $500 cash prize. Work voted ‘Best’ by attendees during the course of the show will receive a $250 cash. The artist whose work the Show Curators choose for excellence will receive a $250 cash prize. $100 each for ten winners of Certificates of Recognition.

I want to believe it is just that sunny optimism that I seek out in others, not naivete, that makes them spout this feel-good mantra. I believe in locally-sourced, sustainably-farmed, whole foods. And given an affordable option, I believe most people would agree. But, have you seen/heard the commercial wherein MONSANTO says they want you to “be a part of the conversation”? MEDIA: Photography via a toy camera or an element of it. Photographs, of your choice of subject matter made with a any low-end, low-tech, limited-control camera “toy” camera – such as pinhole, Holga, Diana, Konstruktor F, Brownies, Anscos, and other Lomo products— will be accepted. Photographs made from Polaroid-type film backs attached to Holgas are also welcome. Photographs from a DSLR or SLR with a pinhole, Holga or loom lens will be accepted. Straight Polaroid-type images or images made with cell phones, disposable cameras or point-and-shoot cameras will not be accepted.

JUROR: Michelle Bates first discovered Holgas in 1991 at the Maine Photographic Workshops. With a fledgeling interest in photography, she was hooked by the weird images and started off a 20+ year career of making Holga images and teaching others about their magic. Her first exhibition outside of Maine was at the Int’l Center of Photography. Since then, Bates has shown her images in shows around the world & won several awards. Bates began presenting her work to classes at the Academy of Art in San Francisco & teaching at Seattle’s Photo Center NW. She has since given talks & workshops around the US & Dublin.

AWARDS: Holga Out of the Box exhibit will consist of 50 images in the gallery & online exhibition. Best of Show receives $500, and Lomography is donating a “Diana F” & film. 2nd Place receives $250 & 3rd Place receives $150

I pursued the holy grail of dining in the Holy City recently. My meal began on the porch of a grand Southern home in historic Charleston, SC overlooking a garden of heirloom blooms cultivated on the property. My meal began with a hand-propagated, rare tomato varietal and a gorgeous regional wine fermented from heirloom grapes. Even blind folded, I couldn’t have expected to be anywhere other than one of the sparkling jewel cities of the culinary culture to be experienced only in the South. JUROR: Annette Cone-Skelton is the Co-Founder/President/CEO/Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Under her leadership, MOCAGA has become a vital part of the cultural community of the state. In addition, Cone-Skelton has over 30 years of experience as an exhibiting artist, fine arts instructor, curator, editor & owner of a fine arts advisory firm. She holds a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art. She currently serves on the Leadership Cabinet of Arts Leadership League of GA. She has served on the boards of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition, Atlanta College of Art, Art Papers, The Contemporary & the Contemporary Art Society of the High Museum of Art.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award & two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, add’l non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented. Award recipients will be announced on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the opening reception for A Sense of Place.
