CALL for ENTRIES: Digital Dimensions

Learn more about the Digital Dimensions exhibit from the Niza Knoll Gallery!PIZZA
hot off the printer

I need a food replicator.  The replicator from the Quark Bar (Star Trek) would be a stand out in any kitchen.  Although I have to admit that using 3D printing technology for food gives me pause.  I can’t wrap my brain around the ingredients that could take so little space that it would fit in my kitchen but yet be able to create an almost infinite variety of foods.  Freaky, no?  There must be science I am just not comprehending.  But, I have to admit the pizza pictured here doesn’t look half bad.  This next Call wants to see how YOU use the technology.  Fascinating…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Niza Knoll Gallery (Denver, CO) for Digital Dimensions.  Enter for as little as $10.  If this isn’t for you, please be sure to share.  Take a look…

I survived another holiday without eating blue food.  Why do people eat the blue food? Blue iced cookies & cakes are everywhere this time of year, so I am going to say this again… step away from the blue food.  The closest thing to naturally occurring blue food is squid ink.  Eat all the squid ink your heart desires, but please stop buying blue Jell-o, Koolaid, popsicles & icing.  You’re only encouraging them.  If you need to experience ALL the colors of the rainbow (including blue), try this next Call instead.  Take a look…

FILTERED

Mellow, slow-cooked flavors are not usually just a product of slow cooking.  There are special ingredients that help meld flavors, that calm individual ingredients like onion into more flavorful combinations with other foods.  Home-made broths are excellent, and even a quality Worcestershire sauce can make a stove-top dinner feel like a slow-cooked delicacy.  My favorite is still sherry vinegar.  It is the penultimate calming pan de-glaze much like the neutral density filter, for which this Call is titled, is the most under-appreciated photo filter. I don’t share well.  I don’t share anything well, but food is the worst.   I am not proud of it.  Maybe it is an only child thing.  I can logically know that a dish will be too much for me, but I will still not agree to share instead.  If I agree to a lets-get-one-of-each-and-share deal, we have to quite literally cut them in half upon arrival & exchange the halves.  Otherwise I spend the meal obsessing about whether or not my husband will eat more than his half.  I fall short of counting french fries–but just barely.  So, my submission to this next Call will likely be a solo one (although my better self sometimes triumphs); however, you are welcome to contemplate sharing.  Take a look…

GROW

I have been searching for my place–in art, in music, in food, in the world.  I have a long history of wanting to do everything at all times.  I want to get it all right, experience it all, eat it all, see it all, do it all.  As a result, I often get none of them quite right.  Silly to some, I believe the answer is geographical.  I continue to seek smaller spaces and places–one town smaller than the next.  Now I seek space, acres inside the next smallest town.  Not isolation so much as controlled interaction.  Space to think.  Space to choose.  Space to grow.  Where is YOUR space?  Your place?  The next Call wants your answers–or questions.  What do you have to say?

Finding Our Place

“If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.”
–Wendell Berry

A sense of place can be an essential element in artists’ creative life, and frequently informs their subject matter, materials, style, approach, studio location, and more.  Whether it be ones childhood “primal landscape,” full of memories of home and family, or the pull of a dramatic landscape, or a connection to a particular place based on historical and cultural events, geography calls to the imagination.  As the world shifts to a focus on the virtual, how has this impacted artists’ work?  Has it resulted in a weakening of a sense of place, or has the meaning of place simply adjusted to this new reality?  This exhibit invites artists to explore this issue from either or both sides, and to celebrate what place means to them.  What informs your work?  A physical location or a virtual world?  Do you know “where you are?” — from annmariegarden.org

I prefer my food naked.  I love food in its simplest forms.  Sauces all seem to sweet or to salty lately.  Just a hint of added flavors like ginger, lemon & the ever-lovely sesame oil are appreciated.  Yes, ceasing smoking 18+ months ago is partly to thank.  But after weeks on the road, I crave asian-slaw-topped avocados like these from Coffee & Quinoa–not comfort food.  Nakedness is good; this next Call echoes that thought.  Seize this opportunity…

Remember having “eyes bigger than your stomach”?  That was the automatic response to an overly large-portioned plate at my childhood dinner table.  It was then immediately followed by a lecture reminding me of children thought to be starving in a far away country that seemed, well, other worldly to a five year old.  The truth would have been more effective.  There were starving children in my own country, my own state, my own town, probably my own neighborhood.  I was fortunate not to want for food as a child.  But today, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach.  I always take on more than I can easily digest, gastronomically and otherwise, and yet I always find myself both hungry to pile on more–even while suffering the indigestion of my last turn at the proverbial table.  This next Call is proof.  In 2016, we are proud to be offering a buffet for all of you.  Take us up on this, the first of several dinner invitations to come…

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experiences.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Here at AAAD, we believed that the food metaphor is a perfect vehicle to inspire you to feed your creative self. We shun the demeaning cutesy-ness of the bohemian “starving artist” image as it numbs us to the real struggle of hunger & starvation worldwide.  Starvation, in a literal way, robs humanity of being human and ends even the possibility of a creative self. For SMALL PLATES, AAAD wants your views on hunger —physical, spiritual, political, emotional and/or creative. Food references are optional.

The SMALL PLATES will be exhibit will both open & close on May 6, 2016 as a part of the First Friday festivities at The Balcony Gallery, located in The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN –a one-day show.
