FERNS

How many perennial vegetables do you know?  There are a few like asparagus & horseradish that aren’t strangers, but there is a whole world of beauties like Jerusalem artichokes, Egyptian onions, Good King Henry & yummy ostrich ferns (aka fiddleheads).  Doesn’t the idea of planting a vegetable once and harvesting for up to 20 years sound like a dream? Granted there are the complications of disease control, smaller harvests & garden takeover, but sometimes one planting can be fruitful for years.  This next Call only happens once per year, but it could pay off for years to come.  Investigate the options…

Check out this Call for Entries from ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (Athens , GA) for 2016/17 Exhibit Proposals.  Only $20 to enter, and the space is FANTASTIC.  Take a look…

My family is tired of eggs (aka the e-word).  We have lost access to farm fresh eggs temporarily, and as a result, our 3 dozen eggs per week have become a chore.  And, we are not quite sure how to do breakfast without eggs.  We have the occasional pancake day, but eggs (scrambled, fried & poached) are the norm.  We are trying to figure out how to break our food patterns & consider non-traditional breakfasts.  Patterns are captivating for a reason, and this next Call wants to see yours.  Investigate this opportunity…

I’ve been studying food preservation, from pickling & water-bath canning to vacuum-sealing & salt-packing.  I’ve run across a huge amount of admirable testing, experimentation and success amongst food-enthusiasts, homemakers, homesteaders, preppers & gardners alike.  I am open to almost anything culinary at least once, but some folks are out there just purposely trying to make food, well, wrong.  Koolickles.  I am almost beyond words this time.  Koolickles are created by soaking dill pickles in a mixture of Kool-Aid® & pickle brine.  Being open doesn’t always work in my favor, but this next Call definitely does.  They are open to almost anything, and it doesn’t have to be Koolickles, I promise…

KITCHEN

It isn’t about how little you spend; it is about how little you throw away.  That is the key to keeping our household food budget on track.  We throw very little away.  When celery goes limp or carrots dry out, we add them to the collection of chicken bones in the freezer to make stock.  I haven’t purchased broth or stock in years.  A little cream  makes a whole new meal from left overs.  Overly ripe fruits make fantastic preserves, coulees, granitas & trail mix.  Stale bread makes great croutons.  Don’t let throwing things away become the habit, recycle or re-use or re-invent it–even food.  This next Call wants your insight on garbage re-use & reduction.  Love this one…

garden duty

We all eat massive amounts of corn.  Since my husband’s Celiac diagnosis, we are a gluten-free household, and it took a lot of work.  But, now it is second nature and, really, no big deal.  But corn?  If I had to try to cut corn out of our diets, we would starve; it is in EVERYTHING.  In 2012, the USDA claimed 88% of U.S. corn is GMO.  I’m not okay with that, so we are planning an attempt to grow our own soon.  Meanwhile, did you know that corn does excellent double duty as a trellis for growing peas?  Plus, the peas supply much-need nitrogen to the soil for the corn.  Don’t you just love nature?  It is in the nature of this next Call to offer DOUBLE the prizes. “Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes…. Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas.” — Arshile Gorky

Can someone bring me a mango ice shave?  I have been desperately trying not to whine about the heat, but you could stave off my whining with a shave ice.  Really.  Don’t bring me a snow cone; it isn’t the same thing.  It is about the location of the syrup.  In a shave ice/ice shave, the shaving creates a snow-like texture that absorbs the syrup.  In a snow cone, the ice is crushed causing all the syrup to settle to the bottom. Don’t try a shave ice unless you are prepared to never eat a snow cone again.
