Tomatoes, tomatoes everywhere. It is THAT time of the year. The Farmers Market is awash with overly ripe tomatoes at rock bottom prices. When they are less than $1 a pound, I have such a hard not taking them home. We’ve taken to having snacks of sliced tomatoes, tomato sandwiches and marinated tomatoes. CURATOR: John Matkowsky runs the Los Angeles drkrm, a black & white darkroom as well as exhibit space that specializes in more under-the-radar, counterculture presentations that support documentary & photo-journalistic work & alternative photographic processes. The national magazine, Juxtapoz, has called Matkowsky a “visionary” for his edgy, dramatic showcases.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Soi Dog Foundation, as well as the first place winner’s favorite charities. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on our site.

SALES: All sales are conducted solely between the artist and the buyer. LA Photo Curator does not handle any part of sales. There is no commission.

Did you know orchids are edible? Many of you have probably seen the sugared variety high atop a wedding cake or as a garnish, but they’re great in salads too. The flavor is a bit like cucumber with the texture of a buttery lettuce and a touch of the bitter bite of endive. Don’t eat orchids given to you as gifts. “The gallery exhibit De La Naturaleza coincides with the Conservatory’s Orchids exhibition, an annual horticulture display that celebrates the beauty and form of the orchid bloom. As the largest family of flowering plants, orchids are a stunning example of the innate tenacity of life. More than 30,000 known species of orchids exist in the wild, with each species possessing distinctive adaptations that have ensured their survival in an ever-changing environment.”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists age 18+

MEDIA: Ceramics. All work entered must be at least 60% ceramic & cannot exceed 6’ x 6’ x 6’.

THEME: The concept of human balance w/ nature, orchids, or nature in general.

JUROR: Sherrie Riley Hawk graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Accounting & minor degree in Art History. She opened the Riley Hawk Gallery in 1986 specializing in Glass Art. In 2004, Hawk decided to embrace all 3-dimensional art forms & opened a new gallery to exhibit ceramics, wood, fiber & art jewelry. Sherrie Gallerie has participated in nat’l exhibitions throughout the country. Hawk has been invited to jury countless museum exhibitions and art fairs. Sherrie Gallerie mounts at least 10 solo shows a year and is committed to representing the best artists in their fields.

AWARDS: All work selected by the Juror and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be included in the Cardinal Health Gallery. Artists will be invited to an Artist Reception. A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the artist whose work is selected as “Best in Show”, and two “Honorable Mention” prizes will be awarded with a cash prize of $250.

SALES: Any artwork sold is subject to a 40% commission.

My kitchen smells of heavenly green cardamom. It IS expensive, and I AM cheap. But, I never regret the purchase. I offset the expense by buying it ground instead of in the pod. It loses flavor quickly when you store it ground, but cardamom is used in a huge number of cultures for dishes both sweet & savory. It is a staple of Indian & Thai foods, but it is also found in Nordic breads & sweet treats. You will love what cardamom will do for rice pudding or hot tea. JUROR: Margaret O’Reilly is the Curator of Fine Art at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. She joined the State Museum staff in 1988, and took on the curatorial role in 1997. At the State Museum, she has organized over 90 exhibitions. O’Reilly received her MA in painting from Kean University, and her work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the region. Her research and exhibition interests echo those found in her own creative output and include issues of chance, identity and mortality, among others, while the formal qualities of particular interest are density, repetition and serial structure.

AWARDS: The Special Exhibitions Committee Award is a solo exhibition at The Center for Contemporary Art. 1st Prize $500, 2nd Prize $250 & 3rd Prize $100.

My family enjoys participating in cultural celebrations from around the world. None of us grew up with any sort of specific cultural traditions aside from spaghetti night or BBQ on Father’s Day. So each year we adopt Chinese New Year, Oktoberfest & even the Day of the Dead as our very own. Chinese New Year gives us an extra 6 weeks or so to make plans for the upcoming year (Yes, we really are late to everything –even making resolutions, ha). ODILON was born in Paris and felt heavily influenced by classical music, ballet dancing and the Masters of painting. At the age of 16, Odilon suffered from anorexia. At 17 she began using a camera to make self portraits. It was simply a way to give her a glimpse inside herself to make sense of the pain with which she struggled to understand.

"Taking action is far better than thinking, for me. Photography saved my life."

If you have something to say, you should say it. Anonymous food & restaurant reviews are cheap shots. Have you noticed that only BAD reviews are posted by “anonymous”. If someone has something good to say, they post their names in all CAPS. I am hopeful that this next Call will redeem the notion of posting, or in this case exhibiting, anonymously.
