While most of the world is obsessed with pumpkin-flavor, not actual pumpkin, I am reveling in the other winter squashes — butternut, acorn & patty pan. My farmers market sells these squash, in season, for $1 each. Split & roast one of each squash, scoop out the insides and puree through the food processor, add a little salt, pepper, garlic and a touch of curry or a few red pepper flakes, and the resulting squash soup is divine. It looks like baby food, but the flavor is unbelievable. I makes lunch for all three of us for at least two or three days. Squash, just squash. It’s a solo act, just like this next Call. My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. Everywhere I go there are pumpkins. Big orange jack-o-lantern-style pumpkins are everywhere –shipped in from farms across the state. Funny enough, while my neighbors (along with most of the country) are obsessed with pumpkin-flavored everything, there are almost NO pumpkins meant for cooking (sugar pumpkins) to be found in grocery stores. Previously, Makrandi taught art history at the UT, Chattanooga and served as a curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Makrandi has a M.A. from Texas Tech & a B.A. from Mercer in GA, and participates regularly in the region as a juror, guest curator & speaker.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $4,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 2 Merit awards & an award from Fast Frame. All accepted artists are encouraged to attend the Awards Reception at The Emporium Center.

I spent my childhood as the family cook & server. I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook. I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own. Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner. I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table. AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Create Now. My chicken stock has been a little off lately. I make chicken stock at least once a week, and I thought I was doing everything the same, but all the dishes I make with stock of been a little off as well. The chicken soup & casseroles & pasta dishes were all missing something. Peppercorns. I ran out of peppercorns and used fresh ground pepper in their place. During her storied career King-Hammond has served as the Founding Director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA, received a number of Mellon Grants, and a Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Other honors include the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture’s Chairperson of the Board and Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee; appointment to the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.; and project director for Ford/Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color at MICA (including Yale School of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts).

AWARDS: MTSU Arts Award $1,000, Dean’s Award $500, Department of Art Award $200, Award of Excellence $100, Up to 3 Awards of Merit $50 each.

JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. His work has also been included in numerous nat’l & int’l group shows. His photographs are included in a number of private & public collections. He has been the recipient of various grants & awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his 2nd NY State Council on the Arts Grant.
