ARTIST of the DAY: Greg Sand

CHRISTMAS future

I watched Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” again last night.  I think the familiarity of the story along with the endless tongue-in-cheek remakes and knock-offs have taken the edge of the concept.  But what if?  What if your life was absent of you?  The work of Greg Sand, today’s Artist of the Day, reminds me of the reality of that concept.  Every vintage portrait over which I have longed in consignment and thrift stores has met their end.  Sobering.  Another thoughtful display of empathy– empathy for those connected to these unknown souls. Once Removed #1 (left) & Once Removed #4 by Greg Sand
Once Removed #1 (left) & Once Removed #4 (right) by Greg Sand

“The series Once Removed consists of antique portraits in which the subject is missing. In all of the images, only the photographer’s backdrop and chair–next to which the sitter once stood–remain. The photographs are now about the absence of the subject rather than about the subject itself. Hopefully the viewer ponders the removal of the person and concludes, given the obvious age of the portraits, that the subject is dead.

‘By giving me the absolute past of the pose…
the photograph tells me death in the future… I shudder…
over a catastrophe which has already occurred.’

“These words from Roland Barthes’s ‘Camera Lucida” describe how I feel when I view a photograph as old as the ones used in this series. I feel a connection to the person, followed by a dread of what is to come, followed by a sense of grief at what has already transpired. The removal of the subject–who is very much alive in the photograph–forces the photograph to more truthfully depict the present reality in which the subject is no longer alive.” — Greg Sand

POINSETTIAs

Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant.  But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades.  Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round.  The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly.  My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps.  She pulled it in  & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving.  So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies.  This next Call is looking for your perspective on flowers this winter.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Litha Moon Gallery (Greensboro, GA) for The Garden Realm: Flora in Watercolour.  I always appreciate a themed call that makes room for the abstract.  Investigate…

Whether a walk down a garden path, or discovering fragile gentle beauty on a woodland trail, flowers have been a silent still and inspiring subject throughout time.  Flowers express love, celebrate rights of passage, such as marriage, birth and death, providing peace for the weary and comfort for the stressed.  They are the passion and tenderness of the lover.  Comfort for the grieving.” — lithamoon.com

STRANGE and gentle

As the years go by, I have come to view the details with different eyes.   With people, I have a far greater capacity for empathy even without intimate knowledge of every detail.  But with art, I find myself captivated by the minutia.  I enjoy dissecting the elements.  The sculpture of today’s Artist of the Day, Ellen Jewett, keeps me busy for hours.  A cursory glance may reveal spectacular figurative work, but the individual elements offer tiny narratives to be combined into a more complicated world view.  Mesmerizing. “At first glance my work explores the more modern prosaic concept of nature: a source of serene nostalgia balanced with the more visceral experience of ‘wildness’ as remarkably alien and indifferent.  Upon closer inspection of each ‘creature’ the viewer may discover a frieze on which themes as familiar as domestication and as abrasive as domination fall into sharp relief.”Ellen Jewett

CALL for ENTRIES: Water Banners

Learn more about the Annual Banner Project from NMSU!no DISWASHER

I am preparing to live my life with only a human washer of dishes.  We’ve spent years eliminating excess stuff, downsizing possessions & square footage. Re-training ourselves after years of ingrained longing for “more” has been tough.  Beginning Spring 2017, we will have limited access to water & power –only what we can produce or capture.  The dishwasher will be the toughest obstacle.  Because of the enormous amount of cooking we do, our dishwasher cycles at least once per day, and there is still a sink full of hand-washable items left.  Maybe the answer is a really deep farmhouse sink to hide the dishes left after I’ve met my hand-washing-insanity limit.  This next Call honors water conservation.  Maybe they have a solution…

Check out this Call for Entries from New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM) for the Annual Banner Project, that is themed after the water-conservation show being held in conjunction inside the gallery.  This is a VERY visible show.  Take a look…

smoke & mirrors

Some days, one has to put one foot in front of the other and simply hope for the best.  When searching for today’s Artist of the Day for AAAD, I stumbled on to the work of Julia Geiser.  This work perfectly illustrates my week.  (continues below)

“When I first started to work with collage (in 2012) I really got attached to the method. With collage I am allowed to work fast and the pictures I create are more likely a sketch of an idea then an in all details finished picture. I only use pictures from the Internet. So the online-voyeurism becomes an inspiration to me. In such a way my work grasps a larger ground. It becomes a debate about rights and licenses, about privacy and commons, about ownership and laws. The collages always oscillate between visual and legal borders.” Julia Geiser

MILK

I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been.  I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon.  It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months.  In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time.  A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues.  Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help.  This next Call wants your perspective on blue.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Pedro Marzorati

hot weather, cold WATER

It has been unseasonably warm in the Great Smoky Mountains this past week — 70+ degrees in mid-December.  While I appreciate the bonus, it also made me think of the AAAD’s Artist of the Day Pedro Marzorati.  His work is a perfect physical embodiment of climate change, and it changes based on your perspective, time & place.  Simply perfect. “The statues speak for us, it’s a way of interrogation,
just ask yourselves!”
–Pedro Marzorati

“Where the Tides Ebb and Flow” was introduced for the first time in 2008, as a part of Land Art “Kielzog” festival, near Amsterdam & then again at the “Sentier du Rhone 2009” festival, in France.  The sculptures illustrates the human silhouette that are more or less submerged in water depending on the increasing water levels.

Did you know that pine needles are edible, sort of?  If you love the smell of holiday wreaths and garlands made of fresh pine, you can get that same sense of comfort from tea brewed of pine needles.  Be careful NOT to use yew, Norfolk Island Pine or Ponderosa Pine (poisonous) and be sure to forage for your needles to help avoid fertilizers and pesticides.  It’s a different way to look at those ever-present evergreens.   This next Call wants to see your different take on plants of all sorts too.  Deck the halls…

ARTIST of the DAY: Anne ten Donkelaar

gone NOT FORGOTTEN

I live amongst the big trees, copious wildlife and dizzying views of the Great Smoky Mountains.  Nature HERE seems rough and rugged and and indomitable. It is easy to forget the delicate wonder and our responsibility to protect it.  Nothing could be clearer in the work of Anne ten Donkelaar, today’s Artist of the Day. (continues below)

Flower Construction #65 by Anne Ten Donkelaar
Flower Construction #65 (left) & detail (right) by Anne Ten Donkelaar

“Weeds become poetry, each unique twig gets attention,
nature seems to float.”

“A damaged butterfly, a broken twig, a bumblebee, some strangely grown weeds: I find all these unique discoveries in my path and then take them home to my studio. Here, I take my time to explore the objects and try to work out how I can show each one to it’s best advantage. My finds inspire me. While looking at them I can invent my own stories about their existence and their lives.  By protecting these precious pieces under glass, I give the objects a second lifeand hope to inspire people to make up their own stories about them.” Anne ten Donkelaar
