Because we live 20+ minutes to the closest grocery store, it can be very frustrating to start dinner and realize we’re out of onions or potatoes or eggs or whatever.  So, we are all about menu planning at our house.  This next Call is about planning as well, but it requires your input, your participation.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from AAAD for 2016-17 Planning & Progress.  We have a lot going on, and I need your guidance an input to make sure that AAAD heads in a direction that works for all of us.  I even formatted it like our normal calls to be certain that I don’t shake up the routine too much, ha.  Keep reading…

Moving Forward from AAAD

Enter the Small Plates Exhibit at The Balcony in Knoxville, TN sponsored by AAAD!ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.  You may notice that we have eliminated the Featured Artist program in an effort to publish more of the ART in our name, Art & Art Deadlines.  If you have an interest in being an Artist of the Day, we want to hear from you!  Look in the juror section for an add’l bonus!

MEDIA:  Are we including all the media Calls you want?  Am I missing something?  Am I under-representing your media?  Please tell me.  I largely post at the request of jurors and gallerists, so sometimes I unintentionally wear blinders.

DEADLINE:  April 18, 2016.  AAAD has a #smallworks (9×12 or smaller) Call out with an April 18th deadline, SMALL PLATES: A Response to Hunger.  $5 Entry & open to prints. Please enter so that we can provide more show opportunities in the future!

NOTIFICATION:  Now.  Tell me what you need from AAAD.  We have incorporated a lot of changes over the years based on readers’ suggestions.  And, I am open to more.  The site will undergo some dramatic aesthetic changes and alterations to the formatting of posts and subscriptions, and you can help shape that process.  The resources will remain the same, and you’re simply stuck with the food references.  But, I’m open to hearing you.  Email me, leave a comment on the post (link to comments at top) or reply to your subscription email.  Any way you wanna…

FEE:  None.  I am maintaining my commitment to NOT charge artists for use of this site. Ever.

Learn how you can help #saveERNIE!JUROR:  R.L. (Rachel) Gibson, continues to be the Editor.  Me.  Publication has been a bit sporadic lately because of events that left my family stranded in rural Virginia for a while.  Dramatic, I know.  I try not to publish personal posts often.  But you were so kind when I lost my father a few years ago, that I thought I would share.  Here’s the whole #saveERNIE story.  So many of you ask me if there is anything you can do to help out at AAAD.  There is.  Instead of paying a $5 Artist of the Day fee or the $15 Artist to Love fee, donate $10 to #saveERNIE, I will enter you for FREE in both the Artist of the Day competition & Artist to Love directory.  Plus, you have a chance to win a house concert.  Time runs out Monday, August 18th, so hurry.

SALES:  Selling art?  Yes?  YEAH!  No? Maybe I can help.  I will be travelling the country this summer giving career development seminars at Arts agencies and collectives.  If you have a ideas for someone that I should approach with seminars, including “How to Price Your Art”, “Creative Branding” & more, let me know.

AWARDS:  Brownie points.  I have millions of “brownie points” up for grabs.  You know you want them.  It is easy to get them.  Choose from one or ALL of these methods:

CALL for ENTRIES: Works on Paper

We intentionally create leftovers by overcooking dinner so that we have a few easy options for lunch on hand.  But, left over veggies that didn’t get fully used in salads or stir frys become the best fillings for spring rolls.  We’re a little addicted.  Have I mentioned that rice paper is my newest obsession? As much as I appreciate their function, I’ll admit that how little room they take up in the pantry and the fact that they seemingly never expire may very well make them the perfect bread replacement.  Yum. This next call wants your paper, but it doesn’t have to be rice paper…

Beautiful food is enticing.  Culinary schools offer classes that teach presentation for a reason.  But ugly food has its place. I had lunch with a friend yesterday; she insisted I pick the restaurant.  I chose Indian food only to discover she had never eaten Indian food.  I felt the need to warn her that the food was delicious, but ugly.  Maybe ugly is a little too strong.  It looks a bit like mud on rice, but the stomach doesn’t care what food looks like..  This next call isn’t muddy, it wants to see all that is beautiful.  Take a look…

Popcorn is now complicated.  I used to enjoy it from the theatre or from the microwave.  But in the continuing effort to eat real food, my husband now insists on popping it from the kernel on top of the stove.  We ran out two days ago, and after briefly considering experimenting with the .gif suggesting you can pop it on the cob in your microwave (don’t do this, btw), we opted for a bag of microwaveable popcorn left from a recent hotel stay.  Just no. ARTIST of the DAY: Melissa Hill

star light STAR BRIGHT

Some days are tougher than others.  On the toughest of days, I wish for the ability to see things through a larger lens, if you will.  I wish for perspective.  The ability to see things without the subjectivity of whim or personal tragedy or privilege.  Surely a different view would lend answers to the who and the why.  Or maybe just compassion and tolerance for others, for oneself.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Melissa Hill, gave me just a glimpse of that perspective I crave.  (continues below).

"The Stars Remember Pangea" by Melissa Hill (installation)
“The Stars Remember Pangea” by AAAD Artist of the Day Melissa Hill (installation)

“I hope that my work has enough longevity and nuance for people to look at it and take something from it and for those same people to walk through life, change themselves, and then reflect upon it in a different light. I want their interpretation to shift and evolve as they do. I want this because in the end, I think that the act of creating and recreating is at the very heart of being human.” — Melissa Hill

My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors.  My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets.  There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows.  I am moving to an all new, albeit all tiny, space in 12 to 18 months, and all the kitchen storage will be open.  All light and no shadows for me.  This Call, however, wants both your light AND your shadows.  Take a look…

“The beauty of light never fails to inspire. It comes in many colors and styles, from the soft monochrome palette of the pre-dawn to the raging intensity of Times Square at midnight. Light can dazzle, light can seduce; light can be so intoxicating many spend hours attempting to capture its essence inside a tiny light-tight box otherwise known as a “camera.” Whether the photographer chooses color or black and white, the expression and compression of the wonder of light from our daily world onto a 2d piece of paper in a compelling way remains both the Nirvana and the great white whale of all photographers past, present and future. Studious professional photo-geek Ansel Adams identified 10 distinct “zones” of light from pitch black to pure light in an attempt to tame the photo beast; in his wake countless lives have been dedicated to the artistic pursuit of these 10 expressions of luminosity” — from 1650 Gallery

Do you own a food mill?  Think of it as a low-tech food processor.  I love them because it makes leftovers multi-use.  Run your chunky marinara through the mill for pizza sauce, while the food processor tends to make a watery mess. Baked apples, once milled make a great granita.  Veggies from making stock end up as a great, light sauce for a fast noodle lunch.  Your time is valuable.  Don’t waste it by throwing away the left overs.  Eat them.  This next Call is a multi-purpose tool.  Apply for one show and get considered for multiples.  Take a look…

Time for planting decisions has arrived.  We’re probably clear of the last frost where I live, but now it is time for mama black bears and their cubs to begin wandering out of their dens.  In fact, critters all seem to be ready to get the season started.  So, how do I choose to what to plant?  I need hardy veggies that aren’t overly attractive to foraging wildlife.  Then there is what we have dubbed the fern-factor.  There seem to be some things, I simply cannot grow; tomatoes & ferns are on the short list.  Funny how gardens differ based on the gardener.  Thumbs definitely come in different shades of green. The relationship between a figure & the landscape context can be powerful. Landscapes are often presented as pristine places, without human presence.  However, figures within landscapes can play dynamic roles as scale elements, protagonists in a narrative, or mysterious presences.  Sometimes figures can ask more questions about a place than they can answer.  For this exhibition photographs that extend beyond documentation of place to bring a human element into the natural or urban landscape are sought. –from laphotocurator.com
