Submit your work for consideration for Oona Rokyta!MUSHROOMS hold the pepperoni

Pepperoni rolls are all the rage in West Virginia, often attributed to a historically large Italian immigrant population.  However, my food fascination during my 4 days in West Virginia this week has been morel mushrooms.  Hunting large caches or collection a large number of morels is a statewide obsession as well as a part-time moneymaker for many.  If you’ve never tried this meaty, intensely-flavored variety, search them out.  You don’t have to make a special trip to West Virginia, your local grocer may carry them.  This next Call is interested in your collection of art, not mushrooms.  Investigate…

ARTIST of the DAY: Laura Lein-Svencner

"Steady Your Course" & "Refrain" (mixed-media collage) by Laura Lein-Svencner!
“Steady Your Course” & “Refrain” (mixed-media collage) by Laura Lein-Svencner

I struggle with self-doubt like every artist, like every person.  I struggle with balance and/or learning to live with imbalance.  I want peace and tranquility, but lack the self-control to say “no” often enough to allow time for the peace.  I find myself annoyed by the gospel of “busy” but fulfilling the stereotype repeatedly.  Art is the exception.  Art prompts but stills me, makes things clearer.

The mixed-media collage work today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Laura Lein-Svencner gave me a little perspective today, helped me weigh options.  Pause for just a moment…

I was born in Florida & spent the majority of my first 5 years there. We had a grapefruit tree in our yard.  But, I can’t remember having so much as a wedge of an orange to eat.  I do remember drinking lots of Tang though.  Odd.  Was my childhood plagued by foods expertly marketed to my single father, or is my recollection just not of those specific memories? Not even a wedge?  How is that possible.  This next Call wants YOUR childhood images. (Oranges not required)Take a look…

“Childhood is bursting at the seams with wonder, learning, exploration, joy, transformation, struggle, and love.  So much carries a child from babyhood to spreading their wings as adults.  It is, at once, so slow and so fast.  So beautiful, and at times, so hard.  What do you want to say about this fascinating time?  We’d love to see your version of the child, from your perspective, in all its wonder or challenge.” –from curator Meredith McGrane

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

DEADLINE: June 27, 2016 (Midnight PST)

EXHIBITION: July 9 – August 9, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 15% of artist fees go to the charity of the monthly curator (griffinmuseum.org) as well as the first place winner’s charity.

CURATOR: Meredith McGrane is a Massachusetts-based photographer whose work often explores her two selves — one part motherhood and one part channeling a penchant for wanderlust that existed long before motherhood.  McGrane’s One Love Project examines mothering an only child with themes of presence, connection, and healing.  Her photographs have been exhibited nationally.  When not photographing, Meredith can be found putting on plays in her living room or riding her Razor scooter around the neighborhood – both with her daughter, of course.http://www.meredithmphotography.com/

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer. L.A. Photo Curator does not handle any part of sales. There is no commission.

ARTIST of the DAY: Dimosthenis Prodromou

Sculpture by Dimosthenis Prodromou
head sculpture by Dimosthenis Prodromou

“I use the term ready-made pallet to describe my color.” –Dimosthenis Prodromou

I’m such a fan of found-object assemblage, trash art & recycled materials.  I understand the debate over archival materials, and I embrace a movement toward outdoor ephemeral sculpture in parks and outside museums & universities.  However, I do often find my self frustrated when an artist chooses to use a recycled materia regardless of of whether it really works.  I don’t like the gimmick of it all.  But the sculptural work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dimosthenis Prodromou finds itself at one with newsprint.  If feels like a natural progression of the paper’s lifecycle.  It appears both solid, but soft & light.   A ready-made pallet…

CALL for ENTRIES: Trees 2016

Learn more about the TREES exhibit from NYC4PA - New York Center for Photographic Art!NUTS for one & all

Last Fall the local acorn crop failed, along with most of the hard mast.  As a result, black bears suffered along with the deer, squirrels & jays; it is a primary food source in the Smokies.  The bears were so hungry last year, more than 50 of them ended up at our local rescue.  I am hopeful for this year’s crop.  Every squirrel, chipmunk & jay that has crossed my path has done so with a green acorn in its mouth, or so it seems.  Fingers crossed the trees don’t let all the little critters down this year.  This next Call is also all about the trees.  I like this one…

“Trees are essential to the lifeblood of the world.  Roots hold the soil so erosion is mitigated.  They are home to birds, squirrels and many other of nature’s creatures.  They bear fruit and in the fall the colors enhance our lives.  Trees can also be looming, ominous, and, in cases of stormy weather, dangerous.  They are integral to forests and jungles.  They stand alone on a hillside creating lovely shadows; shade a child on a hot day; are sturdy posts to tie up the pet dog, hold a hammock off the ground. Remember the lost art of the backyard laundry line.  Send us your images of trees as you experience them – forests, single trees, branches, roots.”  –NYC4PA.com

CALL for ENTRIES: We Love People

Learn more about the We Love People exhibit from Atelier Alen!so so many EGGS

We eat dozens & dozens of eggs each month. It would be easy to assume that when we’re out, we’d avoid them.  That’s not really the case.  I have them fried, over-medium, after late night outings, take them cold & hard-boiled to picnics or on early mornings.  And on my recent stop at Sugar Mama’s, a little bakery/bar combo, in Knoxville, I was treated to “German Eggs”.  Think of it as a fluffy egg bake or like a crustless quiche.  Delicious.  (Funny enough, German tourists suggested we Google “german eggs slang”. Funny.)  This Call hails from Munich, but doesn’t require the inclusion of eggs.  Great international show opportunity…

what a peach APRICOT

I often feel indignant about crap people are willing to eat.  Yes, it’s a little judge-y.  But, there are so many people worldwide without the access to healthy food, so I find myself impatient when people take it for granted.  But, I digress.  My husband recently enjoyed making fun of the newly-acquired fact that the only apricots I have ever eaten have been dried or a part of a sauce or jam.  My husband insisted we buy a fresh apricot, and, apparently, it is on the menu as a part of my breakfast in the morning. I’m not opposed; it just hasn’t ever been a thing.  There is a first for everything, right? This Call is a first for this brand new gallery.  Investigate this artist-run space…

ARTIST of the DAY: Gehard Demetz

sadness & SILENCE

The loss & violence in Orlando this week is unbearable.  I was once watching an interview with today’s artist in which he was trying to speak to his inspiration, his inner voice.  He said,”I represent this world, this culture.”  I heard this and wondered about the world of which he spoke, this world of children in arresting situations, and hoped his work wasn’t REALLY representative of the world.  I don’t want the world to be that painful, that complicated.  But it is.  I love this work.  I will always love this work.  Today, I wish it didn’t feels quite so real. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gehard Demetz has put a face on our world today.  (continues below)
