It has been a tempestuous year. It isn’t because I didn’t get achieve a goal or make it to some proverbial guidepost along my chosen path.  It is because this year I lost site of the journey TO the guidepost, I think.  You never know which moment you will remember, so it is best to make them all count.  The collage work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Robert Curtner, reminded to take a moment to take a breath.

Need a squash recipe?  We should talk.  Because they are in-season, inexpensive & always in-stock at my farmer’s market, it seems as though my family eats “crookneck” summer squash & zucchini nearly every day –sauteed, cassarole’d, mashed & even as soup.  It is the perfect make-something-with-what-you-have veggie, and it is really, really affordable, sometimes 99¢ or less a pound.  This next Call is for really, really affordable art, but I promise their definition is more palatable.  Time to purge the studio…

Each day on my way to work, I fall into a rabbit hole. Some days the rabbit hole leads me down a productive path, but the odds are pretty even.   The method of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Karen Jacobs, seems to replicate my rabbit-hole wayfinding with gorgeous resolve.  Enjoy.

I will eat almost anything once, we’ve established this already.  But, as a kid, I would not get past the lemon-furniture-polish impression I had of lemongrass and ginger.  Luckily I was far more likely to be faced with fried okra than lemongrass as a youngster.  As an adult, I am such a fan.  A day with a bowl (or three) of Tom Kha soup never ends badly.  I’m a little overly enthusiastic about ginger, but perfectly enthusiastic about this Call.  Take a look…

I’m taking less food pics in restaurants these days.  I’ve been shamed into stopping.  How ’bout you?  Now when I am served a beautiful dish, I have to weigh whether it is worth the condescending looks of disdain from servers and other patrons. Years of being allowed to handle artwork as a juror, curator and/or gallerist has made me the patron that museums loathe.  I want to feel the texture, smell the oils, see the support structure.  Art should always be personal. Intimate. But, I refrain.  I still long to touch, but I don’t.

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Christian Hetzel chooses texture and palette to convey a complexity of message.  There is a reason all signs flash and a commercials scream.  Competing for our attention is complicated.  But does it have to be?

My time as an illustrator has made me such a fan of iconography –from typography to sacred icons.  I appreciate the the subtleties of unspoken language.  I ask all new design clients a handful of questions that help me get to know them & their design style.  In answer to the “serif vs. sans serif” question, one of my recent artist-clients responded, “Sans serif. What am I, a lawyer?” Perfect.

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sarah Stone employs icons, both common & obscure, to open a dialogue.  Does the need to ask & discover open up the possibility for understanding?  Isn’t understanding the foundation for everything we want?  What do you see in this work?
