While traveling around the country, people often ask what food I miss most from home.  The truth is, what I really miss is tea — unsweetened, cold-but-not-iced, sans caffeine.  I drink at least a gallon a day.  I can make it on the road, but it isn’t the same.  Different water, different container, different refrigerator.  When I am nearly home from a road trip, I always think the same thing, “I can’t wait to get home & have a glass of tea” (and see my family and dog, yeah, yeah, I know).  This next call wants to know what “home” is to you.  Take a look…

It is casserole week at my house.  Every once in a while we spend a day assembling casseroles.  I don’t know why people consider them “easy” meals because they take excessive amounts of time, prep and organization, but I do find them convenient to have around once they are pre-prepared on a week I need free time at the end of the day.  Plus, when we have a bevy of rapidly ripening food from our local farmers market, casseroles offer an excellent long-term storage option via the freezer.  But the best part of making casseroles are the ingredients.  Like many of you, I am guilty of getting into a rut of one protein and two vegetable for meals; however, casseroles are a collage of sometimes a dozen or more ingredients.  The combination of ingredients makes for a special treat –like this next collage call.  Don’t miss this one…

I find tactile joy in vintage textiles and incorporating them into my life gives me a sense of history, of continuation, that my personal story lacks in some degree.  The works of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mister Finch, are gifts of life, experience, labor and joy — of mindfulness.  These creatures have a sort of fabricated authenticity, a beautifully crafted reality.

I witnessed a cheese fight this week.  Okay, a cheese argument.  I was having dinner in a restaurant and overheard a fairly ugly discussion about sheep’s milk vs. cow’s milk cheeses.  As we finished our dessert, the conversation was headed toward a goat’s milk cheese debate, and fearful that I would be unable to jump in, I promptly exited.  Ridiculous. My Aunt Maggie B. loved marzipan. We would attempt to craft our own from honey, powdered sugar and finely ground almonds & foregoing the additional almond extract.  The year I spent with her trying to form our Play-Doh-like lumps into little fruit and vegetable shapes taught me that food color can be derived from real food, not just a jar, that gold and silver are edible in small amounts, and that treats well-labored taste better.  I celebrate the making & eating of every marzipan fruit with my great aunt Mag (RIP, 1922-2005).  This Call is a chance for you to celebrate life with someone who has already passed.  Take a look…

Food matters to me, inspires me.  I believe that what we eat informs our health & happiness.  I’m not talking about counting calories or carbs.  I am concerned with whole foods, grown locally with minimal processing.  Real food.  I am always delighted to see food inspiring others.  Chocolate has inspired art, including a sort of painting, in the the pastry arts for years, but did you know there are chocolate portrait painters?  No joke.  This next call is looking for work done through a painterly process, but I’m guessing they aren’t expecting chocolate.  Investigate for yourself…

The D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities awarded Mánlapaz a 2014 Artist Fellowship for artistic merit.

Food imagery IS the visual brand of this site.  For years, I used primarily pristine images of perfect foods on crisp, white, burned out backgrounds. But in the past couple of years, my strategy has changed. I have concerns about how many people, children specifically, don’t know what natural produce looks like.  I’ve had many cashiers at the grocer offer to let me trade in a piece of organic fruit for something waxed, dyed & shiny for fear I was buying “bad” produce. Nature doesn’t care about symmetry, saturation or uniformity.  This next Call wants your take on nature.  Open to broad interpretation…
