My Chinese take-out night has a routine: egg drop soup, steamed dumplings, Kan Shaw beef & a fortune cookie. My friend who works behind the counter laughs every time I pick up a menu because he knows my order won’t change. Until last week, my husband came home with a bag of neatly stacked fold-up boxes & a pint of steaming soup. Dinner was lovely, but cookie-less. Fortune cookies must now be ordered; they cost 25¢ each. I know the cookies are far from Chinese & the fortunes ridiculous. But, it I love them still. JUROR: Proposals will be reviewed by the Brentwood Arts Exchange staff. Exhibitions will be scheduled based on the goal of presenting diverse exhibitions of artwork of the highest quality and of engaging a broad range of audiences.

AWARDS: Solo & group exhibitions in The Main Gallery or The Lab Gallery. Download a .pdf of the gallery floorplans. The Main Gallery is approximately 2,500 sq. ft. with 1,800 sq. ft. of exhibition space. It features 14 ft. ceilings, LED track lighting, three ceiling-mounted high lumens projectors, acoustic baffling & white walls. The Lab Gallery is approximately 700 sq. ft. and can exhibit wall-hung artwork only. Like the main gallery, it has 14 ft. ceilings, LED lighting & white walls.

ABOUT: The Brentwood Arts Exchange is The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission’s component of the public-private partnership Gateway Arts Center, serving as an anchor for Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District.

SALES: The M-NCPPC (Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission) will retain a 25% commission on all art works sold during or as a result of the exhibition.

What’s the weirdest pantry staple at your house? It seems like a tiny thing, but my kitchen is rarely without thai chili paste; it has become my go-to source of heat. Typically it is a combo of red chili pepper, garlic, lemongrass, galangal (ginger), salt, shallot, spices & Kaffer lime. It is a balanced flavor for me, regardless of the origin of the dish, and it is easier than roasting a pepper from scratch every time I want to add a little heat. I add it to dishes time and time again. This next Call is one I will probably post time and time again because $9 is a do-able gamble for many of you, and I appreciate the projects they have funded thus far. See if it is right for you…

I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week. Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter. I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not. THEME: Natural Encounters. “We now know that 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, as are hundreds of other species. In the the Arctic, large areas of permafrost are melting, and an ice swath the size of Delaware is separating in Antarctica. These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course. Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. The images may or may not be documentary. I’m looking for emotional impact as well as a strong composition. I encourage all photographic techniques, although the message is more paramount than the medium.” –Fran Forman

CURATOR: Fran Forman‘s photo paintings have been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally, and are in many private collections as well the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, The Grace Museum & the County Down Museum. Forman was selected to be Artist in Residence at Holsnoy Kloster, Norway, in 2016 and exhibited at the Sunnhordland Museum in Norway in 2017. Recently, Fran has mounted solo exhibitions as well as numerous group shows. She is represented by Pucker Gallery (Boston), After Image Gallery (Dallas), and Susan Spiritus Gallery (CA). She is a Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, a recipient of several grants and Artist Residencies, and teaches digital collage internationally.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. I have finally resolved that consuming water is necessary. While I still prefer my beverage more dressed up than water, but I do get it. What I do not get is the temperature specificity. I have a friend that posts every nutritional fact she can find to social media. Her newest campaign suggests that cold water burns more calories than warm water. Completely flabbergasted by this possibility, I did my homework. The difference turned out to be 8 calories. EIGHT calories. Do you care about 8 calories? Me neither, but I do prefer my water cool. His artwork is collected widely internationally, and is in the public collections of Prince Charles, Ford’s Theater, Yale University, The George Washington University, Boston University, Maryland Institute College of Art, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In addition to his own studio work, Glen is also a renowned teacher and mentor. He has taught avidly at both the university and community level for nearly two decades and in 2013 he opened his own art school, The Compass Atelier.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. In 2016, she was a finalist for Critical Mass and was invited to Review Santa Fe. I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?

What makes comfort food a comforting food? I have a friend whose local tradition is bring food to a grieving family. Upon the death of her cousin, she noted that a half-dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese, two layered dips and three lasagnas, none of them comforting to all. For me it is fried green tomatoes, and occasionally goat cheese. After a little research it seems that it isn’t the cheese or butter or starch that makes comfort food, it is familial connection, the security of childhood (if you had any). I am fairly certain my father never tasted goat cheese in his life, but my grandmother made the best fried green tomatoes ever. So, maybe. I don’t know. What do you think? For her personal work, (though it’s all personal), recent exhibitions include The Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, MA; Filter Photo Space, Chicago, IL; The Southern Contemporary Art Gallery in Charleston, SC; Camera Commons in Dover, NH; The Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College, MA; Plates to Pixels Online Gallery; and the Dorchester Art Project, MA.

Did you know that water lilies are edible? ME EITHER. I tripped across Edible Wild Plants of Pennsylvania and Neighboring States by Richard J. & Mary Lee Medve from Penn State Press (©1990). Don’t ask how I ended up in this rabbit hole; let’s just blame Instagram or Pinterest. Not only are water lilies edible, now I have recipes too. I can’t find any reference for their flavor, but I’m guessing floral and grassy like most edible flowers & greens. THEME: Summer Song. The exhibition is open to varied interpretations of the subject, from literal to far-ranging. Representational images of summer-related sights, activities, impressions, or atmosphere—as well as surrealistic or abstract evocations inspired by the subject—are welcome. Expressions may range from images of sun, sea, surf, and verdure to a more melancholy awareness of summer’s last gasp, a prelude to fall. Artists may also respond to the musical aspect of this call for entries. One could interpret the rhythm of the season, composing a visual image of summer’s harmonies.

Strickland writes a monthly column for clydefitchreport.com. Strickland’s screenplays for feature films have won prizes in prestigious script competitions.
