I’ve gotta figure out how to make composting work in my life.  The amount of food discarded from my kitchen from trimmings alone could no doubt eliminate any need to purchase mulch or fertilizer again…ever.  I’m told there are simple guidelines and compact systems commercially available.  This next Call may not e interested in your food scraps, but they DO want your trash.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Ojai Art Festival (Ojai, CA) for Discarted.  I love trash art shows, and the cash awards range from $500 to $1500.  Don’t miss this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Paint

or not to olive

Olive oil flows freely in my kitchen.  I use it in everything from the obvious, sauteed mushrooms and onions, to baking and sweet treats like peanut butter cookies and brownies.  Olive oil when combined with onions, celery and carrots become the foundation for almost every savory dish that exits my kitchen.  It is the basis upon which everything else is built.  Many feel that paint occupies that same space in the arts.  This next Call wants your view on the media…

I don’t like to have anyone cook in my kitchen other than my husband.  I’m just territorial that way.  I feel judged and inadequate, and I don’t understand why.  I have also never had a guest blogger on AAAD.

But, with the holidays slowly approaching, inevitably I will have to endure guest chefs in my kitchen.  And today, we will have a guest blogger.  There is a time for most things in this life, and today it is time for this to be said, even if not by me…

INVISIBLE REJECTION

From an email received by Editor R.L. Gibson Sat, 10 Aug 2013 18:31:18 -0400:

Loose Lips by David Willison

“One day, someone more energetic than me will compile a “best practices” manual for galleries holding juried art exhibitions. The first page of the manual will contain a list of basic commandments to be followed under all circumstances. The first commandment will read something like ‘Thou shalt always include a letter of acceptance or rejection.’

“It seems like basic common sense, right? It’s an obvious no-brainier and normally what you would expect from anyone who considers themselves to be an art professional. It’s also the polite thing to do.

“You would be surprised, however, how often such basics are neglected. Over the last year or so, it’s happened to me on multiple occasions. The deadline for notification comes and goes and there’s no word. Trying to be polite, you wait several days under the assumption that maybe the juror’s dog ate your images or perhaps the gallery director had some sort of bizarre gardening accident and the notice was delayed. Then, with great reluctance, you follow up with an e-mail asking politely if there has been a delay. Much to your chagrin, you are told that your work was not selected and that only accepted artists were notified. To make matters worse, the gallery suggests that this is actually common practice.  Well, I’m not buying it…

No matter how you slice it,
informing artists by this default mechanism
(The invisible rejection letter)
amounts to no notice at all.
It’s unprofessional,
it’s lazy,
and it’s simply not polite.

“My wife raised me to send thank you notes and I expect similar behavior from art professionals. If you don’t have the stomach to send rejection letters, get out of the juried art show racket. Alternatively, at least spell out such practices in big, bold type somewhere in the call to artists.”

–End of rant…Dave Willison

*Editor’s Note:  I completely agree with you Dave.  If they can take your money, then they should be able to send you a rejection letter.  A number of AAAD readers are gallerists.  Here’s to hope your point hits home with at least one of them. –R.L. Gibson (Rachel), Editor

Vacation has not been kind to my figure.  Tomorrow is the last day of my summer vacation at Lake Lure (Dirty Dancing & Last of the Mohicans were filmed here), and I am already trying to figure out tomorrow’s food schedule and we’ve just finished with today’s brunch.  What is it about being out of town that leads to over-indulgence and gluttony?  Maybe I need another treat to figure it out. I’ve had a few jobs and a few careers.  One that I loved more than most was as a Downtown Development Director.  I believed in the tiny town; I believe in urban renewal in rural locations (pop. 3500).  Alas, my time there was shortened to a mere 3 years.  I’ve never admitted this before, but part of my impatience with the development process was my inability to attract new, exciting food opportunities.  Really.  This next Call is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of making ART the answer.  Please investigate this FANTASTIC opportunity…

I try not to spend all of these posts talking about my new gluten-free lifestyle.  Boring, I know.  But it has been enlightening.  Most of all, I have learned the key to GF menu planning.  Instead of figuring out how to substitute every wheat product you can no longer eat, just eat more of the naturally GF foods.  If you are what you eat, I am all things green.  This next Call wants your unique perspective on botanicals.  Great show, great gallery; don’t miss it…

The natural world has fascinated photographers since the invention of the medium. Botanicals are props in portraiture, examined in landscapes, and rendered as patterns in décor and apparel.

Preserving the ephemeral quality of plant-life as a still image allows viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of natural forms, but it also allows artists to re-purpose nature for our own expressive ends. Whether in bloom or decay, edible or admirable, mammoth or miniscule, all interpretations of flora are welcome for The Kiernan Gallery’s exhibition, Botanicals.

summer

Yes, it is the first day of August, and I am judging the JUNE entries to the $5 Art Contest. I will spare you the excuses.   As the hot, rainy days of Summer start winding down, we all need a little peace without boredom.  Beautiful sushi with a wasabi surprise.  Here it is…

This month’s artist works is a painter–now.   I appreciate the contemplative nature of landscape without having to endure another wagon wheel in a wheat field or lone seagull in the sand.  This work is like the intersection of reality and perception.  The message is subtle, but appreciated.

Learn more about Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge!

On behalf of ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I am proud to announce the Featured Artist chosen from the June entries to the $5 Art Contest is David Phillip Hodge. I find this work to be…a visual respite but also thought-provoking.

FEATURED
ARTIST:

David
Phillip
Hodge

A Missouri native, Hodge began his art career at age 18 at Missouri State University.  After graduating with a BFA, he immediately headed to New York to pursue his other passion, filmmaking, at NYU.  For 30 years, he then ran his own film and television production company, producing and directing everything from political campaign spots, to music videos, to documentaries and commercials.

Painting by Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge!Hodge won numerous awards, including 2 Emmys, 3 Cine Golden Eagles, and a Monitor Award. While in NYC, he also directed Off Broadway theatre.  He is thrilled to have now returned to painting.  His current focus is exploring the emotion evoked through line, shape and color.  The work lies at the intersection between color field painting and representational art—examining the ways in which they co-exist within the same canvas.

Are you self taught or formally instructed?

“Well I graduated with a BFA in sculpture & ceramics. One of my teachers once told me that after graduation you spend the next few years trying to unlearn what you learned in school.”

Painting by Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge! I’ve had
quite a while
to unlearn
what I learned
in art school.

Your work is very quiet. Is the process as peaceful as the work comes across?

“I believe the process of picture making IS somewhat peaceful, at least for me.  There is a fair amount of taping, spraying, brushwork, sanding and stencil cutting though.  Also, there is always music playing.”

The connecting aesthetic in your work seems to be landscape.  How landscape and color field work together for you?

Painting by Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge!“Landscape?  I keep coming back to the landscape. It gives me a certain amount of freedom to explore color because the landscape is so recognizable to the viewer.”

Tell me about the painting process for you.  Do you paint from photographs, plein aire  or from memory?  Is your work strictly paint or is their silk screening involved as well?

Sometimes I work from photographs that I’ve taken or that my wife has taken. And other times I work from memory.  I don’t currently use silk screen  but, that not a bad idea.  Maybe in the future.

Painting by Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge! What style or school of art do you think your work fits into and why?

“I believe my work fits most closely as color field painting. I  coined the word Colorscape to describe my current work.”

You know we have to talk about food. What is your favorite?

“My favorite food changes from time to time or day to day for that matter, but at the present time I would say sushi is my favorite food. Last week I was in the Midwest so it was steak.”   I suspect you are easily bored and just haven’t found your true favorite.  Let me know if that ever changes, David.

Painting by Featured Artist David Phillips Hodge! What about snack foods?

“My favorite snack food is definitely beer.” Best answer ever.  No, really.

So, what’s coming up
next for you?

“I wish I knew.”

Honesty, not bravado.  Refreshing.

David, thank you for making me take a second look at landscape.  I’ll try to be less dismissive in the future.  Lesson learned…maybe.
