CALL for ENTRIES: FL3TCH3R 2016

Learn more about the FL3TCH3R exhibit!circus FOOD

Popcorn is the nightly snack of choice at my home, but lately it has taken on a more symbolic nature.  The current election climate has left me feeling disconnected from the political process –as though my voice and vote don’t count.  It feels like I’m watching a movie, eating popcorn and yelling at the innocent girl to warn her that the bad guy looms just around the next corner.  This next Call strives to connect people to the political and social issues that comprises contemporary culture.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Reece Museum at ETSU (Johnson City, TN) for The FL3TCH3R Exhibit. Here’s your chance to speak your mind without media restriction. Don’t miss this chance…

His complexly layered work connects issues of printmaking and art history with social concerns of public health, human rights abuse and responses to HIV/AIDS, death, sexuality and the body.  Creating powerful historical records of experience with patients, he changes the ordinary role of a doctor into an artist inspired by healing, fusing the space between art and medicine.  Before his retirement, he was clinical associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and member of the Institute for Medical Humanities, The University of Texas Medical Branch, specializing in issues related to HIV/AIDS.  In addition to being the subject of numerous gallery exhibitions, Avery’s work is found in many prestigious permanent collections.

ARTIST of the DAY: Hank Willis Thomas

"I Am A Man" by Hank Willis Thomas
“I Am A Man” by Hank Willis Thomas

“This series of paintings was inspired by a 1968 photograph by Ernest Withers of marchers during the Memphis sanitation workers March.  Martin Luther King was assassinated while there in support of the March.  The men carried signs which read ‘I am a Man’.  I found it fascinating that the the phrase I grew up with was ‘I am THE Man’.  The collective statement became individualistic in the age of integration.  Reflecting on American history I wanted to riff and remix the text, ultimately ending with the revelation ‘I Am. Amen.’  MLK showed us that our greatest gift is our consciousness and it is up to us what we choose to do with it.” —Hank Willis Thomas

I implore you to listen.  Listen. Understand your privilege, whatever it may be.  Being defensive doesn’t serve you. Don’t just look at people; SEE them. Love people for their humanity — both strengths & flaws.  Respect the space each person needs to work and speak and react to community in which they live.  Recognize that people have the right to be who they are, regardless of, and even in spite of, your expectation of them.  I am inspired by the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Hank Willis ThomasYou can change the world. Food transports me.  While I travel a lot regionally, I spend far less time west of the Mississippi, much less outside the U.S. borders, than I would like. If I can’t be there or go there today, or this year, food offers an escape to places far and near — both past favorites & those destinations yet untraveled.  This next Call wants to discover the places to which you depart.  Take a look…

CALL to ARTISTS: Purchase Award

Learn more from workingartist.org!fast FOOD

Groceries arrived at my door this week.  You see, we chose to become a one-car family years ago.  We live fairly remotely –2.5 miles from the closest two-lane road and nearly 10 miles to a minor four-lane highway.  So, when the water pump on our car erupted in the driveway, getting groceries became a challenge for the weekend. Luckily, we have access to a grocery delivery that costs less than the taxi to and from the grocery store would cost.  Some days, you just need a little help.  This next Call wants to offer a little help to artists.  Take a look…

Check out this Call to Artists from WorkingArtist.org for the $1000 Purchase Award. $25 entry & send a link. It doesn’t get any easier. Don’t miss this one…

ARTIST of the DAY: Ronan Considine

from Rectilinear series by photographer Ronan Considine!

“They change drastically as hard edges become soft lines and muted colors become vibrant.” Ronan Considine

Context.  Election coverage has reminded me, once again, of how context matters.  Today, almost anything can known; however, without context, any statement can be made to mean anything.  Are we training people to be mistrusting?  Vigilant?  Both?   The photography of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Ronan Considine, employs long exposures to create ethereal, painterly images.  I find the Rectilinear series, purposefully devoid of context, make me want to know the context.  I want the how.  But would the context rob me of the joy of experience alone?  Again, context.

shared patterns connects people”
Phyllis Gorsen

I quietly seek connections among us.  I find solace in subtle cues from the universe that I am not alone.  I find the accidental proof, like universal symbols found in pictorial language, give me the strongest feeling that we can find a way to communicate, eventually.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Phyllis Gorsen, seeks those same connections through pattern.

“Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth and when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.” –David Bowie

Art is always an exercise in bravery, in chance, in putting your creativity out to be judged.  The payoff in freedom from the fear of failure and growth through experimentation are immeasurable.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Anne Blair Brown, has such a great perspective on art sales, testing technique and being brave.  Read more here.

My thoughts are consumed with how small I can live these days.  How little space can I use?  How little stuff do I need?  How liberating would it be?  My current stumbling blocks to small space involve food.  No surprise.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Greg Holden Regan, addresses consumption using food as the catalyst to start the conversation.
