CALL for ENTRIES: Expo 36

Learn more about Expo 36 from the b.j. spoke gallery!fast FARE

The freezer saves dinner about two days a week in my house.  We purposefully cook more portions than we can eat and save the leftovers.  It started out as a way to send lunch with my kiddo for school, but it has become a dinner rescue regularly.  When you get busy and have forgotten to plan for dinner and live nearly a half hour from the closest grocery or restaurant, you’re grateful for frozen leftovers.  This next Call is not a leftover or frozen, but I did neglect to plan the publication more than a few days out from the deadline.  Sorry about that…

Check out this Call for Entries from the b.j. spoke gallery (Huntington, NY) for Expo 36.  The deadline for this New York gallery show is just days away.  Don’t miss this chance…

I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, one of the premiere food towns in the U.S.  We were always proud of both the seafood & the fried chicken in the Holy City.  And while Charleston-ians still have every reason to be proud of the fresh sea fare & deep-fried poultry, the food scene has developed as a shining example of the best of ALL things edible –French, Cajun, Greek & most other imaginable cuisines.  The South isn’t just Southern, just like the jurors of this next Call.  Investigate this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Abstract 3

Learn more about "Abstract 3" from Art-competition.net!FOOD cubed

I recently attended an “abstract” dinner party.  I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into, and that made me MORE eager to attend, ha.  Upon arrival, I found that every dish was comprised of food cut in an identical manner. I couldn’t tell cubes of potato from turnip or cubes of yellow carrot from summer squash.  From appetizer to entree to dessert, it was an evening of simple foods prepared with time-consuming precision.  I was forced to savor the preparation and intent since nothing was representational of its original form.  Abstract food.  Fascinating. This next Call is all about the abstract as well.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Materialized

Learn more about the Materialized exhibit from The University Gallery at CMU!wedding SWEETS

Practical 3D food printing exists.  years ago I made some clever segue using Star Trek’s food replicator as a the unthinkable –food printing.  And now, there is the Bocusini, which uses all-natural food cartridges to print solid-ingredient food sculpture.  The first use that pops to mind is EDIBLE, miniature, exact reproductions of human body scans for wedding cake toppers.  Not the first thing that popped into your mind? Is it just me? What a perfectly unreasonable, delightfully impractical application.  This next Call wants your artistic applications, practicality not required.  These calls are rare; don’t miss it…

CALL for ENTRIES: Order & Chaos

Learn more about the Order & Chaos exhibit at the Fred Parker Giles Gallery at EKU!PAPER or plastic?

Do you prefer boxes or bags in your pantry?  I like the structure of boxed pasta, beans & cereal, but I love the price of most things bagged.  I prefer not to store things in plastic, but I’m not convinced the process used to create cardboard is any better.  I own a lot of glass which inevitably involves breakage and the energy consumption involved in cleaning and/or sterilization. It can be difficult to distinguish the order from the chaos, but this Call offers us a second change.  Give it a shot…

CALL for ENTRIES: Stories, Parables & Tall Tales

Learn more about the Stories, Parables & Tall Tales exhibit from Studio Channel Islands!DINNER anyone?

I’ve been eating with strangers lately.  That is, I’ve had the privilege of eating family-style  –from farm-to-table dinners with 20 at a table, or a restaurant with 8 at a table.  It reminds me of stories my grandmother used to tell of Sunday dinners in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, when her family, that included 10 children, would just lay a sheet over the home-grown & prepared food on the dining room table after everyone ate, just in case friends or neighbors dropped by.  They didn’t have much except a wealth of food to share. I love the planned inclusion of unplanned guests and the stories that must have inevitably followed. This next Call offers you an opportunity to tell your own story.  Don’t miss the opportunity…

Never setting out to illustrate a specific theme or story, the artist creates each image as she goes, changing and shaping it along the way.

The landscape of my kitchen counter is changing. My day is incomplete without fresh fruit. While the happy dance of the clementines begins soon, it is otherwise just the banana bunny hop for most of the winter.  I find that most in-season winter produce is either not finger food (cranberries, pomegranates) and/or expensive (guava, kumquat, kiwi).  So clementines & bananas still life it will be.  This next Call invites you to create your own still life.  Orange you glad?
