“I wish I were with you” by textile artist Rosalind Wyatt

________________

“My work is about words – the ‘sound’ of them, the ‘feel’ of them and the forming of letters.   The choice of tool is uninhibited and relevant to the content of the text – therefore my range of writing tools has expanded from nib, through to brush and now to a needle.” Rosalind Wyatt, textile artist

Words have meanings; chose them carefully.  The repercussions can be irreversible.  The textile work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Rosalind Wyatt, investigates the emotion held within every individual mark of the hand to uncover the how each story “feels” as it unfolds.  Spectacularly intimate.

CALL for ENTRIES: Nature

Learn more about the Nature Exhibit from art-competition.net!freckled FRUITAGE

Food imagery IS the visual brand of this site.  For years, I used primarily pristine images of perfect foods on crisp, white, burned out backgrounds. But in the past couple of years, my strategy has changed. I have concerns about how many people, children specifically, don’t know what natural produce looks like.  I’ve had many cashiers at the grocer offer to let me trade in a piece of organic fruit for something waxed, dyed & shiny for fear I was buying “bad” produce. Nature doesn’t care about symmetry, saturation or uniformity.  This next Call wants your take on nature.  Open to broad interpretation…

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Evla Vlašičová, is a self-taught photographer.  But, after a recent house fire, Evla finds herself without a darkroom.  I find that creative expression is a bit like a trickle of water in that when it encounters an obstacle, it will always find an alternate path –just as Evla has found the art of the linocut.  You won’t find her on social media, but you can watch a great documentary about her creative process here.

CALL for ENTRIES: Red 2

Learn more about the Red 2 Exhibit from art-competition.net!another shot of RED

Lamenting the end of red foods the other day, I completely forgot about rhubarb.  The further South you live, the later in the season you can harvest rhubarb.  It isn’t a common find at fresh markets in my area, or even at my grocer, in theory because it is a pain.  It is disease resistant and hard to kill, but it requires a well-fed diet of compost and/or manure each year and SO MUCH watering.  Nonetheless, I love rhubarb jam.  Rhubarb, sugar, lemon juice.  Simple, sweet & tart.  Try it; you’ll love it.  This next Call is looking for your red work, fruits & veggies are optional.  Delicious…

FREE Resources.

Enjoy FREE resources from artandartdeadlines.com!

Over the past seven years Art&ArtDeadlines.com has evolved.  If you haven’t been with us from the beginning, just assume we’ve always been this fabulous.  But if you’ve been reading for 5+ years, well, we’re happy to have had a witness to the transformation.  The fundamental change from rambling, long posts to shorter posts in standard formatting came somewhere around year two, followed quickly by changes to color and imagery.  Last year the branding got more consistent, and the pics grew in size.

Even my taste in food has changed over time.

____

This year we have begun to follow through on the art portion of Art&ArtDeadlines.com with the #artistoftheday posts, but we still have a lot of work to do.  And the next step is offering additional resources for professional development like grants, purchase awards and residencies –maybe even a guest post or two.

If you want to help, we welcome your suggestions, need your re-posts & shares.  What do YOU need?  On a more personal note, I would welcome your feedback & support.  Seven years is a long time to post opportunities, and the payoffs have been huge on a personal level.  The artists and jurors and gallerists that I have have come to know and love and count amongst my friends and peers remains the biggest and most unexpected gift.  Thank you.  If we don’t know each other, comment or message or email me.  Say hello.  I’m here for, fingers-crossed, years to come.

ARTIST of the DAY: Melissa Hill

star light STAR BRIGHT

Some days are tougher than others.  On the toughest of days, I wish for the ability to see things through a larger lens, if you will.  I wish for perspective.  The ability to see things without the subjectivity of whim or personal tragedy or privilege.  Surely a different view would lend answers to the who and the why.  Or maybe just compassion and tolerance for others, for oneself.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Melissa Hill, gave me just a glimpse of that perspective I crave.  (continues below).

"The Stars Remember Pangea" by Melissa Hill (installation)
“The Stars Remember Pangea” by AAAD Artist of the Day Melissa Hill (installation)

“I hope that my work has enough longevity and nuance for people to look at it and take something from it and for those same people to walk through life, change themselves, and then reflect upon it in a different light. I want their interpretation to shift and evolve as they do. I want this because in the end, I think that the act of creating and recreating is at the very heart of being human.” — Melissa Hill
