my PUDDIN’

I love Mediterranean food, and when I think of Portuguese food, I conjure images of olives and cinnamon-topped rice pudding.  Not together, of course.  So, did you know that Portugal has Europe’s highest fish consumption per capita and is among the top four in the world for this indicator?  Me neither.  If you are awarded this Residence Opportunity, I expect a full report — on art AND food.

Check out this Opportunity for an Artist Residence program sponsored by ARTerra in Portugal.  This is a FREE chance to apply for an art submersion program.  Create a full body of work in Portugal.  Take a chance…

I love Art-O-Mat! Art Starts at only $5!

I originally became an art gallery owner because I couldn’t afford the art I loved, and I wanted to be responsible for making at least some of the art I loved affordable.  But I assure you that your friendly blogger didn’t invent the idea of affordable art.  Neither did Art-O-Mat, but I love their take.

I am blogging from the road today, so, instead of posting a traditional Art Deadline for you…I thought I would just remind you of some opportunities that are ALWAYS out there for you like Art-O-Mat.

What is an Art-o-mat?
Art-o-mat machines are retired cigarette machines that have been converted to vend art. There are approx. 90 active machines in various locations throughout the country.  Find an art-o-mat near you.

Check out the Art-O-Mat work of Kathy Fisher (pictured right).Remember to "Research the Ingredients" before submitting!

UMMYYUMMY

I am not a fan of baby talk.  I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone.  However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme.  I have not excuse.  None.  And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

I am the soup queen.  I accidentally found out during a run of bad weather one winter during which we couldn’t make it to the grocery store that I am really good at making soup.  I had a whole series of artwork happen because I accidentally put myself in a situation where I was trapped at home too.  My point?  Maybe life is just a series of accidents, and with any luck, maybe more of them will be happy than not.  If you’ve accidentally (or puposefully) shot 10 seconds of good film, here’s your chance to put it to good use.

Check out this Call for Entries from The Soap Factory for Ten Second Film Festival.  It is free to enter.  You can email your entry.  And your work could have an audience of thousands.  What do you have to lose?

*Editor’s note:  I have a soft spot for The Soap Factory.  Clearly, they love what they do…hence the overwhelming amount of community and volunteer support they enjoy.  Do we all wish The Soap Factory was in our city or town? Certainly.  But never let geography be your crutch.  The chances are good that there is a free-spirited, albeit struggling, arts organization in your hometown.  Show them a little volunteer support, and the rest could be history.

JUDGES:

Anthony Lister‘s “tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. What is evident in his work is the inability to remove a man’s life from his creations. Studio, gallery and museum shows aside, his name and imagery is on street corners worldwide accessing a massive audience by way of stickers, aerosol paint and all manner of markers. His paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and participating in the repetition as a father of two. Superheroes, skateboarding, graffiti, Australian gangster celebrities, television, jail birds, tattoos, the internet, pop and advertising resurface in his art practice.” from Too Heavy For Superman by Joseph Allen Shea.

Judge JB BerkowJB Berkow: “I have been exhibiting and selling my work for more than forty years. In 1976 at age 27 I founded the most well-known cooperative gallery in the country, “Touchstone Gallery,” located in Washington, D.C. My work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican Contemporary Art Collection…not bad for a nice Jewish girl!

It has never been enough for me to show and sell my own work, for whatever reason I have always been interested in promoting other artists’ work. That is the reason that I went on to found “Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studios, Inc.” in 1994 and opened “RosettaStone Fine Art Gallery” and “RosettaStone Corporate Art Consulting.”

McCormack’s most pressing present project is a memoir called Hoodlum Heart,” of which he says, “It’s all about what it was like to be the test dummy for the crash and burn generation, an epic work of shameless name-dropping and self-libel that is bound to create a scandal.”
