CALL for ENTRIES: Table Testaments

Learn more about the Table Testaments exhibits from the Arts Benicia Gallery!

SOUPER bowls

I plead guilty to taking my eating utensils and dishes for granted.  Because of my love for the art of plating food, I’ve always owned solid white functional dishware.  My mother is a “collector” of flatware and hasn’t allowed me to pick my own, EVER.  It is bestowed upon me on occasion without request or explanation.  We all have our burdens, ha.

Now I am married to a commercial production potter (120+ pots a day & NOT pictured here), and suddenly the world of dishware is my oyster.  Did you know you need differently sized and shaped bowls for salad, cereal & pasta? As I said, we all have our burdens, ha.  I love eating out of the bowls my husband has thrown.  Every once in a while he comes home with a “one off” just for me because he thought it looked like it was “meant for me”.  *swoon*  I’ve been trying to convince him to enter this show because I love this venue.  It isn’t restricted to a literal interpretation, so be sure to investigate this opportunity.

Check out this Call for Entries from Arts Benicia (Benicia, CA) for Table Testaments.  $45 Entry & 40% commission. Take a closer look at this community-based non-profit…

SPRING greens

Sweet potato pie is a family favorite. As we head into fall and the the pumpkin-spice vs no-pumpin-spice debate rages on endlessly, I’m over hear making sweet potato pies from fall all the way into winter.  Sweet potatoes are available year ’round, take much less time to cook from scratch than sugar pumpkins and require far less added sugar.  I know you think you don’t like them, but try them.  Fall in love with them and you can be eating their beautiful orange goodness, from scratch instead of can, for the entire winter.

This next Call is centered around the mood and ambiance of winter and the work that it inspires.  Winter tends to be productive for me, but it often produces darker work, literally and metaphorically.  Are you affected by the change in the season?  This show’s call deadline is in September, so you’ll either need to pull work from last winter or predict the oncoming season.  If you’re looking for a museum show for your resume, investigate Marin MOCA, it is one of my favorites.

Check out this Call for Entries from Marin Museum of Contemporary Art (Novato, CA) for Winter Solstice.  $35 entry, 40% commission.  Delivery is nearly a month after notification, making shipping easier. Take a look…

TOFU no, VEGGIES though

Testimonials and recommendations are great, but my taste buds choose for themselves.  As a welcomed side-result of writing these posts, I receive a significant amount of unsolicitied recommendations for brands of food that are meant to change my mind about tofu, kale & collard greens.  And, I diligently try most to of the suggests, just in case.  On occasion I muse to myself, “that wasn’t half bad”, (never about tofu though), but the important thing for me is to not get stuck in a rut or trust a single encounter as the definitive one.  Did you know that I avoided asparagus for 20 years because of my experiences with the canned variety as a child.  I missed 20 years of green tree goodness.  Never again.  So, send me your food suggestions, and I’ll send you my art experience suggestions.  Here’s one now.

Yesterday, I offered a Call that chose random winners for supplies in a specific media, but today I offer a Call with a juried winner of cash open to wide array of media.  More accurately, this is a purchase award of sorts.  You do not have to submit the work that will be exchanged for the $1000 –that can be negotiated later.  They even pay shipping costs to get the work to them. I’ve been touting this opportunity for years, so there is a long, RESEARCHABLE history of winners.  Draw your own conclusions about their taste, but it is worthy of consideration.

Check out this Call to Artists from WorkingArtist.org for the $1000 Artist Grant. $25 entry & an email. It doesn’t get any easier. Don’t miss this one…

FLAVOR bombs

I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies.  The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural.  But there is a glaring exception.  Edamame.  I love those little beans.  I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells.  It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show.  This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members.  Your dollars have power; spend them wisely.  I love this organization & its mission.

COLD complication

The school year returns soon.  Many of you know I have a kid in college, so his impending exit will mark a change in my house like so many of you with students.  My grocery bill will shrink, and his eating habits will change.  At home, my son eats whatever is put in front of him.  At school, he can choose to fuel himself on pizza and coffee 6 out of 7 days.  I choose to believe not, but a quick glance at the bucks he spends on ‘bucks reveals the ugly truth… his degree will be sugar & caffeine-fueled.

What gets you through a work day?  Do you have a routine or a vice?  Is there a difference, or is the label just a way to guilt yourself into less-frequent indulgence?  After a hard day in the studio recently, I picked up my keys and headed out, making a quick pitstop in my husband’s studio to let him know I was going.  “I’m headed to the liquor store.  Want anything?” I asked.  “Day that good, huh?”  *blink blink blink* “How about I work on dinner while you’re gone?”  Smart man.  This next Call is for those of you whose memory of late night projects & exam cramming are still directly behind you.

It is no secret that this is one of my all time favorite art publications.  Check out this Call for Entries from Create! Magazine (print publication) for the 2019 MFA Print Edition.  $30 entry for this gorgeous magazine.  Don’t miss this chance…

ORANGE you glad?

I’m going to have orange elbows any day now.  I have been craving and eating carrots daily.  In my area, they are usually around a dollar a pound for full size organics and make great chips for hummus, a great boost to Indian dishes, beautiful color in Buddha bowls.  When my son was learning to eat real food, he preferred anything sweet or starchy, naturally, with a preference for carrots and sweet potatoes.  His hands, feet, knees and elbows stayed a hilarious color of orange for a few weeks.  I expect mine to turn any day now, ha.

Continuing with this week’s publication theme, I want to introduce you to Up the Staircase Quarterly if you’ve not yet had the privilege.  Established in 2008, Up the Staircase Quarterly is an online journal of poetry, art, interviews, and reviews. New issues are published every February, May, August & November, unless otherwise stated. And for some of you that write poetry in addition to visual work, UtSQ nominates for the Pushcart, Best of the Net, and Best New Poets

They have a 10+ year history and a detailed Masthead for you to research.  So, check out this Call for Entries from Up the Staircase Quarterly (online pubication) for Harrow.  There is no entry fee, but also no payment. Do you have suitable work?

a HUNGRY summer

I’ve had my head down working and planning and growing.  How about you?  Spring always makes me take a second look at my process, while summer makes me kick into production mode.  What are you doing to support your work?  I am contemplating meal kits and taking a day off from the studio.  I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense at first glance. But lunch is the bane of my daily schedule.  Just when I hit a creative stride, it is time for some sort of meal prep for lunch.  I live in a house with folks with dietary restrictions, and everyone eats lunch at home.  So, I’ve been exploring options.  Take out takes just as much time to pick up, and delivery is cost prohibitive.  A lot of meal kits are labor intensive despite arriving with pre-prepped foods, and many of them are the wrong quantity or, again, cost-prohibitive.  I’ve found one (Hungryroot & no, this is not sponsored) I think I am going to give a try.  The ingredients look good, the sizing is right, the cost is manageable.  I am excited about getting lunch off my plate, so to speak.

One of the other big stumbling blocks for me is juggling my boring-but-necessary household tasks with my work schedule. Finding time. I find it hard to work creatively when I am encumbered with a list of non-creative tasks to do at home.  My husband more than carries his half of the burden, but someone still has to do my half, ha.  So, I’ve been practicing taking one day off from the studio and trying to cram all of the household tasks I can into that day –laundry, appointments, meal planning, grocery shopping.  It is a work in progress.  I’ll be sure to give you an update before summer’s end.  In the meantime, I’ve had two acceptances for publication in two different magazines, and I am inspired by the positive attention it has drawn to my work and added to my social media reach.  So, I am offering a few publication calls this week.  I am running close on deadlines, so don’t delay in submitting your work.

Check out this Call for Entries from New England Review (Print & Digital Publication) for Cover Art.  There is an additional call for artwork for use on their website on the same page. This is a reputable publication option, with artist payment (albeit tiny) and little to no risk.  Is this a good fit for you?

“Freedom, that’s what I feel when I paint…
the freedom to explore the unknown parts of myself & our perplexing world as I see & experience it.”
Sophia Gunkel

Why do you create?  Do you have a physical response, or is the reaction solely an emotional or cerebal experience?  I have the tendency to drag my feet when I should be in the studio –somedays for a lack of purpose or an unclear direction or fear of failure.  But, I have learned how to put on foot in front of the other and get to IN the studio.  I resoundingly feel the same way every time I get there and paint.  Freedom.  Every time. The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sophia Gunkel, speaks to me and it seems we share that same sense of freedom.  Please explore more of Sophia’s work.  (And check out her Facebook feed for time lapse video!)

villainous FRUIT

I blew my grocery budget this week.  I ran out of vanilla, almonds, pecans & walnuts all at one time.  I may or may not have fallen prey to a Pinterest recipe that called for what seems like all the avocados in California, ha.  Avocado toast is the villain once again.  I see a lot of rice and beans for the end of the month.  Do you rule your budget or does your budget rule you?

One of the most common stumbling blocks to productivity that I hear from artists is budget.  Some media are incredibly expensive, some are not.  We don’t always choose our media; sometimes it chooses us.  So what do you do when you can’t afford 16 new tubes of oil? I have a friend that has become a master of mixing and regularly stocks only 6 colors.  Early on, he did only monochromatic work that allowed him to stock only 3 tubes.  I’m not suggesting this is your answer;  I don’t have the answers.  But I know that I must create, so I must find a way.

For years, I only did work that was under 12″ x 12″.  Because I worked on gallery wrapped canvas or cradled wood I could ship anything I made via USPS Priority Mail for $8 or less.  Now that I’m working on paper, I am torn between framing affordably small pieces or adding huge chunks of museum-quality matting to increase the negative space.  That means you’re average 8″ x 10″ piece is 16″ x 20″ framed and 18″ x 24 “x 4″ by the time it is wrapped & packed & shipped.  That doesn’t go anywhere in the continental U.S. for less than $36 bucks, and $50+ internationally, each way.  This next show is for work 10″ x 10″, so if I work the math backwards, I would have to do 4″x4”.  Hmmm, challenge accepted.

So, how about you?  Do you normally work small or is this a challenge for you?  Entry is cheap & the size means shipping is cheap.  Check out this Call for Entries from The Studios of Key West & Lemonade Stand Gallery (Key West, FL) for 2019 Small Works Exhibit at the Sanger Gallery.  $14 Entry & 50% commission.  This show has a multi-year history for you to research.  Is this right for you?

CRAVING connections

We had three days of Spring-like weather, but Monday was 15° colder than Sunday.  Tuesday is predicted to be 21° colder than Monday was. So that means SOUP, predictable, I know.  While prepping lunch today I was day dreaming about making my favorite Tom Ka Gai when my eyes scanned a row of go-to cookbooks I keep above my stove.  What did I find?  The Soupmaker’s Kitchen (not an affiliate link, BTW) by Aliza Green.  I don’t know how it ended up in my house, much less on the shelf with my favorites.  No one in my house remembers buying it or ever seeing it.  Bizarre, no?  It contains great advice on stock-making and other best kitchen practices along with some fantastic recipes, and Steve Legato’s photography makes everything look luscious.  I cannot wait to make the Hungarian Woodlands Mushroom soup & the Senegalese Peanut and Yam Puree with Ginger.  Yum.

While eating lunch, I happened to read this next Call from Annmarie Arts Center.  I’ve written about them many times over the years because I am SUCH a fan of this venue.  I applied today.  This is a “living studio” experience.  They split the gallery into 12’x12′ studio spaces for artists for 5 to 14 days, and you work in an open environment with other artists & gallery visitors.  They encourage sales, and the commission rate is super low.  This is a sort of make your own residency for out of town folks, and more like an production art show for locals.  There is some housing available for out-of-towners.  I want to use the two weeks to test out some new content and techniques before I head off to Scotland for a month.  I hope I make the cut.  If you have time & the interest, we may get an opportunity to hang out for a couple of weeks & work together. So exciting.  Fingers crossed –for you AND for me.

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Artists in Action. $20 entry & 20% commission.  What would you do with two weeks of nearly uninterrupted creative time? The deadline is just a day or two away.  Here’s your chance…
