Food always has carries place memories for me.  I’ve told you before that I dream of Memphis when I eat BBQ & jambalaya makes me long for New Orleans.  It isn’t unlike the smell of turkey roasting reminding someone of Thanksgiving.  Food, smell & place are all about living in the moment, aware of your history, but fully present in the NOW.  This next Call is all about the spirit of place.  Embrace this…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Maine Media Workshops + College for the Spirit of Place 40th Anniversary Photo & Video Contest.  The entry fee is standard, but the prizes are great.  This could be a great opportunity!

I think people drink more wine at the holidays because of all the whining.  Wine won’t stop people FROM whining, but it will certainly help you tune them out.  Bitching, when done correctly, can’t be tuned out–regardless of wine consumption.  This next Call is all about the bitching, but I suspect the wine is welcome too.  Take a look…

SILVER SPOON

I am simply gobsmacked by food trends.  I’ll admit, I’ve eaten a silver dragee or two (those little silver balls on cupcakes), but really…does my pretzel need to be silver?  Does my apple need to be gold?  Utterly astounding to me, but hey, who am I to judge.  If you want silver pretzels, Esslack food color from the Deli Garage is the tool for you.  This next Call will only put your WORK in the Silver.  Investigate…

BURN the sauce

Desserts are born out of boredom, at least for me.  I have a hard time sitting still.  So, while I’m waiting for pasta to boil or sauce to thicken, I often get a great idea for dessert.  By the way, while pursuing a recipe for that illusive dessert, I often overcook the pasta and/or burn the sauce.  This next Call is a much better way to multi-task.  Take a look…

Dessert wines are one of my many guilty pleasures. Biscotti is not just for dipping into your espresso. I’ll take a lovely glass of vin santo with the lingering taste of honey and apricots with a touch of cream. Keep your coffee or espresso (which traditionally comes before vin santo BTW). If you end up at the opening of the collective exhibit for this next Call, have a glass for me. Better yet, bring me a bottle of vin santo back as a souvenir…it beats a t-shirt anytime!

I collect food-specific dishes.  Weird, I know.  I have ceramic turtles for wasabi, three-legged lava rock bowls for salsa, futuristic pods for olives, individual berry bowls, and there will be more.  (Maybe these egg cups).  Always the proper tool for the job, you could say.  This next Call is really ALL about the collectors.  See if this one is right for you…

Here’s an interesting Call for Entries from the Sylvia White Gallery in Ventura, California for the 2013 Collectors’ Choice.  I am intrigued, this is a great opportunity for a few of you, but the challenge is in figuring out if YOUR work is something this anonymous group of collectors want.  Investigate for your self…

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living.  I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food.  Isn’t it always with me?  I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming.  Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like.  I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating.  Now, I live a labor-instensive, farmers market going, whole food preparing, canning and preserving sort of life.  Is it easy? No.  Is it tasty? Absolutely.  This Call wants your earth inspired art.  Take a look…
