to the party

I plan a Kentucky Derby party each year, well, abstractly speaking.  The party never actually happens, but my intentions are always good.  I dream of andouille sausage  with black-eyed peas and lobster with truffle oil. But in the end, I remember that mint juleps don’t require a party and excuse myself from the planning.  I recommend a small amount of planning for the next Call, at least abstractly…

Check out this Call for Entries from Kentucky Art Speaks Gallery (KAS) in Louisville, Kentucky for Abstracts.  This is open to all abstract art for as little as $10.  This is a great opportunity…

FRIED this year

Fast food french fries are simply criminal.  I love the golden arches, but my rear end cannot handle a box of fries very often.  But as for the rest of the taters on the market, there are very few worth eating.  They always look and smell better than they are.  Do you have a guilty love of fast food?  Print out the nutritional facts for your favorite and carry it around with you.  Read before you order…puts a crimp in your criminal desires, trust me.  This next call is all about mug shots, but they aren’t criminal.  Take a look…

I prefer to drink my soup.  Chowder and stew?  Give me a spoon and a bowl, but soup calls for the perfect cup.  The handle has to be big enough for me to slide my four fingers through, warming my palm against the cup.  Should be sturdy enough to keep the soup warm while I sip, but not too heavy to hold for the duration.  This next Call might give me a way to drink my soup out of a beautiful piece of art.  Trip to Louisiana anyone?

CALL for ENTRIES: Art of the Plains 2011

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!BEIGE NO LONGER

When people hear “American Food” they think of a homogenous buffet of beige food, but American food is a great quilt of influences from around the world.  For example, New Mexican Cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona.  One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile—in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked.  Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating.  Eat a little for me at the opening of this next show…

Check out this Call for Entries from the American Plains Artists in Las Cruces, New Mexico for Art of the Plains 2011.  All traditional media (no photography or computer generated) considered.  The entry fee is $25 (plus membership), and the deadline for digital entries is June 4th.  I have NEVER seen this many awards for one show EVER…

CALL for ENTRIES: Art of the Plains 2011

We have to have both the image size of the artwork itself and the outside dimensions of the frame.  The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame.  An example of that is a 24″ x 36″ artwork with a five inch frame.  Sculpture would be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds.  Artwork must represent the theme of the show: American Plains.

Learn more about Juror Robert Shoofly Shufelt!NOTIFICATION:  Acceptance Letters will be mailed on or before July 2, 2011.

JUROR: New Mexican cowboy artist Robert “SHOOFLY” Shufelt has created graphite drawings that have become an important thread in the fabric of Western Art, earning world wide recognition. His work illuminates the bare bones of an artist’s craft and portrays the physical evidence of his perception. They are celebrations of a dreamer who has allowed his dream to become reality with all its grit and honesty, yet he still finds the work endlessly nteresting and satisfying. He has an artist’s vision of cowboys as they can only be around another cowboy, unposed and unself-conscious. They are men who practice their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving it up to the rest of us to determine whether they’re working or playing. These disciples of the “cowboy way” are Shoofly’s top hands and his work is forever honored by their friendship.

Judge JB BerkowJB Berkow: “I have been exhibiting and selling my work for more than forty years. In 1976 at age 27 I founded the most well-known cooperative gallery in the country, “Touchstone Gallery,” located in Washington, D.C. My work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican Contemporary Art Collection…not bad for a nice Jewish girl!

It has never been enough for me to show and sell my own work, for whatever reason I have always been interested in promoting other artists’ work. That is the reason that I went on to found “Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studios, Inc.” in 1994 and opened “RosettaStone Fine Art Gallery” and “RosettaStone Corporate Art Consulting.”

Presently, with his wife Jeannie McCormack, he co-publishes the New York art journal Gallery & Studio. McCormack’s most pressing present project is a memoir called Hoodlum Heart,” of which he says, “It’s all about what it was like to be the test dummy for the crash and burn generation, an epic work of shameless name-dropping and self-libel that is bound to create a scandal.”
