I MISS THE TREATS

I haven’t had a trick-or-treater at my door in years.  I miss seeing cute kids in even cuter costumes.  I miss giving out chocolate, knowing it may be the only candy that doesn’t get thrown away later. But alas, I live in the mountains.  Not many people live in neighborhoods, and those that do have an “organized community,” don’t have walkable streets.  We buy 4-wheel drive vehicles because we actually need them.  Our kids go downtown and trick or treat on Main Street.  No joke. So, I have to get in the spirit other ways.  I think this next Call is a great start.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from RaiseART (online) for Trick Art Treat, a fun online competition with no fee that might just get you out of your rut and into the Halloween spirit.  The award is pretty sweet…

Vacation has not been kind to my figure.  Tomorrow is the last day of my summer vacation at Lake Lure (Dirty Dancing & Last of the Mohicans were filmed here), and I am already trying to figure out tomorrow’s food schedule and we’ve just finished with today’s brunch.  What is it about being out of town that leads to over-indulgence and gluttony?  Maybe I need another treat to figure it out. I’ve been enjoying a Summer of barbeque–tomato-based, mostly, with a dry rub here and there.  But, I kind of miss the mustard-based BBQ of South Carolina.  And on the even more rare occasion, my thoughts turn to vinegar-based BBQ of North Carolina.  It is a lighter, tangy taste than the heavy, pass-the-antacid variety common to most of the South.  If you go to the opening for this next Call in NC, be sure to try it.  Take a look…

I was out of town this week, and traveling makes eating out necessary.  But, I was trying to behave so I’ll fit back into my Spring clothes again soon.  At one restaurant, I ordered a California Chicken Salad which included mixed greens, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, blue cheese, candied pecans, croutons, grilled chicken and balsamic vinaigrette.  Mine was sans the blue cheese & pecans, but I am still wondering what made it Californian.  The oranges?  I still don’t know.  Check out this next Call with a name that references place, but it isn’t really the theme.  Interesting…
