I plead guilty to taking my eating utensils and dishes for granted. Because of my love for the art of plating food, I’ve always owned solid white functional dishware. My mother is a “collector” of flatware and hasn’t allowed me to pick my own, EVER. It is bestowed upon me on occasion without request or explanation. We all have our burdens, ha.

Now I am married to a commercial production potter (120+ pots a day & NOT pictured here), and suddenly the world of dishware is my oyster. Did you know you need differently sized and shaped bowls for salad, cereal & pasta? As I said, we all have our burdens, ha. I love eating out of the bowls my husband has thrown. Every once in a while he comes home with a “one off” just for me because he thought it looked like it was “meant for me”. *swoon* I’ve been trying to convince him to enter this show because I love this venue. It isn’t restricted to a literal interpretation, so be sure to investigate this opportunity.

JUROR: Juan M. Santiago’s art practice explores the narrative of human experience using traditional & non-traditional methods in clay and other mediums. Juan holds an MFA from Alfred University & a BFA from California College of the Arts & Crafts.

JUROR: Emily Williams creates detailed glass sculptures inspired by the natural world. Her glass sculptures explore complex plant & sea life forms. Science & natural history have always played a strong role in her life. She began teaching sculpture in 1989 at Clarion University of PA. Over the years she has shared her passion for sculpture with her students. Williams has received a number of grants and awards through the years, including a Fulbright Hays grant to study in Italy. Williams was awarded her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO.

AWARDS: Juror’s Awards will be named by the juror and announced at the Awards Reception on Sunday, November 12, 2017. These are cash awards for high-quality work. Purchase Awards will be named by the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery and will become part of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s permanent art collection. Awards are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

She is currently at work on the first U.S. survey of Mark Dion’s work to open in 2017. Erickson received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 and has published and presented her writing widely. She serves as a visiting critic at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

So, the move is complete. My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile. I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious. Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances. The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating. It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective. I met the talented James Dickey, the author of the book Deliverance, many years ago. As I drove through the rural south today in search of the perfect patch upon which to grow the rest of my life, I felt the feral nature that must have inspired so much of the desperation with which the book reeks. When my flight instinct kicks in, I need only look up to the trees to see the topmost tiny branches swaying in the biting cold air to find my calm again. The work of today’s Artist of the Day, Fenella Elms, gives me that same sense of order in the disorder. Calm in the chaos.

Did you know orchids are edible? Many of you have probably seen the sugared variety high atop a wedding cake or as a garnish, but they’re great in salads too. The flavor is a bit like cucumber with the texture of a buttery lettuce and a touch of the bitter bite of endive. Don’t eat orchids given to you as gifts. “The gallery exhibit De La Naturaleza coincides with the Conservatory’s Orchids exhibition, an annual horticulture display that celebrates the beauty and form of the orchid bloom. As the largest family of flowering plants, orchids are a stunning example of the innate tenacity of life. More than 30,000 known species of orchids exist in the wild, with each species possessing distinctive adaptations that have ensured their survival in an ever-changing environment.”

JUROR: Sherrie Riley Hawk graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Accounting & minor degree in Art History. She opened the Riley Hawk Gallery in 1986 specializing in Glass Art. In 2004, Hawk decided to embrace all 3-dimensional art forms & opened a new gallery to exhibit ceramics, wood, fiber & art jewelry. Sherrie Gallerie has participated in nat’l exhibitions throughout the country. Hawk has been invited to jury countless museum exhibitions and art fairs. Sherrie Gallerie mounts at least 10 solo shows a year and is committed to representing the best artists in their fields.

AWARDS: All work selected by the Juror and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be included in the Cardinal Health Gallery. Artists will be invited to an Artist Reception. JUROR: Annette Cone-Skelton is the Co-Founder/President/CEO/Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Under her leadership, MOCAGA has become a vital part of the cultural community of the state. In addition, Cone-Skelton has over 30 years of experience as an exhibiting artist, fine arts instructor, curator, editor & owner of a fine arts advisory firm. She holds a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art. She currently serves on the Leadership Cabinet of Arts Leadership League of GA. She has served on the boards of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition, Atlanta College of Art, Art Papers, The Contemporary & the Contemporary Art Society of the High Museum of Art.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award & two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, add’l non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented. Award recipients will be announced on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the opening reception for A Sense of Place.
