LUPPER for you
!

Why not have linner?  It seems that our weekend days often start with a late dinner that means no one is hungry at lunch.  We end up having what we call “linner”–a cross between lunch and dinner.  The best part?  It frequently means no one is hungry enough for dinner so we end up snacking all night.  this next Call want to know whats for dinner. What will it be?

Check out this Call for Entries for Dinner brought to you by the A. Smith Gallery (Johnson City, Texas). The entry fee is low, and you might be inspired to eat a little linner (or lupper, as my my mother calls it) of your own. Take a look…

“Dinner or Supper?  What a dilemma.  I have called the evening meal ‘dinner’ for as long as I can remember and ‘supper’ just dropped from my vocabulary.  My mother reminded me of the use of ‘dinner’ when my uncle invited us over to partake.  In my head, we were going at 6PM.  Well no, he meant noon.  Dinner for him was lunch for me and supper for him was dinner for me.  Whatever!  It all boils down to one thing.  Food.  And hopefully the company of good friends and loved ones.” — from the A. Smith Gallery website.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. Entries must not have been exhibited previously in an exhibition at A Smith Gallery.

Still Life

From Dutch masters’ paintings to contemporary photography, the still life has played an important role in art history. This genre grants the artist complete control over their subjects, allowing unparalleled ability to select details and manipulate the scene.

Still lifes often employ symbolism, where the objects assume their own character and identity. An entire story can be told with the arrangement of a few items; toys, dolls, and household goods become surrogates, and natural life is given a persona. For Still Life: The Art of Arrangement, The Kiernan Gallery seeks evocative and symbolic still life images.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: August 20, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of accepted work via email approximately eight days after the submission deadline.

ENTRY FEE: 5 for $25, each add’l $5

Does it feel like you eat the same thing day after day.  Me too, somedays.  To break things up at my house, we challenge ourselves.  Last month it was a huge increase in veggies with a concentration of stuff we never buy–like spaghetti squash and kale.  This month, it is a reduction of dairy and meat.  It isn’t necessarily about the benefit of a particular change so much as the results of having to think about food differently.  We end up eating crazy concoctions that we might never have otherwise tried.  This next Call has an open theme, but it has to be new (as of January 2011)Time to make a change, folks…

The self-portrait: Is it your compulsion?  Your obsession? An impulse?

Was it out of necessity (the mandatory Photo 101 exercise, a portrait for the office newsletter, or because you needed to self-promote)?  Is it the autobiographical record you decided was best told in image?

Sometimes we have to step in front of the lens – we can’t seem to communicate what we want to others, or maybe we’re just the most convenient choice for a model (the least expensive, for sure).  Even if we got there by default, there is no one better able to translate our vision to the camera than ourselves.  Perhaps you were experimenting with persona or striving for a personal perfection?  Were you desperately seeking Self?

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online! For those willing to dig deep and bare all, the self-portrait is a reward for your bravery – because whether you love it or hide it in the depths of your archives for decades, you’ve learned from it.  Whatever your intention, there is nothing closer to an authentic portrait, than to sit both behind and in front of the lens.  And whether for totally narcissistic or completely humble intents – you have to admit, it’s you.

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living.  I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food.  Isn’t it always with me?  I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming.  Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like.  I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating.  Now, I live a labor-instensive, farmers market going, whole food preparing, canning and preserving sort of life.  Is it easy? PURPLE POTATO,

Produce is the every man’s gourmet food.  I will try to avoid preaching about the cost of produce being a contributing factor to the unhealthy eating habits of people world wide, but the truth is, I spend a larger percentage of my grocery budget on fresh produce than anything else, including proteins.  But if you have the desire for a gourmet treat, it doesn’t have to be thousand-dollar truffle oil or exotic sashimi-grade fish.  Try a new fruit.  The taste found in a pomegranate is not to be believed.  Substitute a purple potato in your recipe.  Buy a fresh herb plant for your kitchen window; just one will do.  This next Call wants the every man’s gourmet photo–the cell phone pic.  Investigate…

Images made with mobile phones are becoming part of the photographic mainstream. Made with a phone camera, processed on the phone and even printed from the phone, these images are showing up in exhibitions both as a genre and alongside classic silver gelatin prints. Show them your latest mobile creations.

What distinguishes mobile device photography from that made with other devices? Less and Less. Possibly the fact that you can do it all on one device is unique. Sometimes the images created with mobile devices are more candid. Having a camera with us all the time lets us capture moments that can otherwise escape. Very quickly mobile phones are becoming just another type of camera taking their place alongside pin hole cameras, toy cameras, point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras etc. Here, in the gallery, we say it over and over – it’s not the camera – it’s the photographer’s vision and skill that makes a great photograph. Last year’s mobile phone photography exhibit said it. They want this year’s exhibit to prove it.
