JUROR:  Thomas A. Nowak has been photographing professionally for over 25 years. His expertise is in 19th Century photo processes and lighting of commercial/residential interior spaces. As the Studio Manager at Columbia College, Thomas has been instrumental in the crossover from analog to digital photography.  He is currently teaching Advance Lighting classes’ part time and has been for over 20 years. Selections of his “Salt prints” are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

AWARDS:  1st place award is a month long group exhibition at Morpho Gallery, including an opening night event, postcards and advertising.  Award(s) will be announced at the opening night reception.

I want to plant salad greens TODAY, but my husband keeps reminding me that the snow is probably not over for the season and that it got down to 29 degrees last night.  I love planting salad greens because they are so temporary.  They are seeds one day and less than 6 weeks later they are on my dinner table.  I can replant, or I can plant something else.  This next show deals with the temporal nature of art and heroes.  I love this show…

Chicken skin is bizarre. I frequently buy chicken in bulk then take it home and clean it.  Skinning chicken still freaks me out.  Clearly, I’ll could never have married into the Alaska: The Last Frontier family.  Peach skin gives me the willies too.  I think it is a textural issue.  Luckily, this next Call is all about skin of the non-chicken variety.  The deadline is just around the corner…

The holy grail of culinary education is the Cordon Blue, and more recently, the Culinary Institutes of America.  I attended Johnson & Wales for a year and continue to be grateful for all that I learned.  I put me on the path to being the food-lover that I am.  And honestly, without the foodie side of me, I’m not sure this blog would have made it.  It gave me a brand, a platform if you will, to set AAAD apart from all the art deadlines out there.  Many feel that museum exhibits are the holy grail of art shows, and this next Call could be your holy grail.  Take a look…

Every once in a while, I get the urge to live off the land.  Why disturb nature with factories to process food when I grow, raise and prepare my own?  It only takes watching a documentary on ice fishing in Alaska or beheading a chicken down South, and I quickly get over the urge.  A backyard garden will have do.  This next show wants to see how you capture nature…undisturbed.  Don’t miss this chance.

JUROR: Amy Miller is the Executive Director of Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP). Every October, ACP produces the largest community-oriented photography festival in the United States. The festival and other year-round programs are aimed at nurturing and supporting photographers, educating and engaging audiences and enriching the national (and international) dialogue on photography.

Ms. Miller earned her MFA in photography from Pratt Institute and was Gallery Assistant at Alan Klotz Gallery in NY from 1995 – 1997. She was Gallery Director at Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta from 2000 – 2007 where she first met and worked with luminaries of fine art photography and exhibited their work at art-fairs across the US. In the last five years, Ms. Miller has participated in numerous portfolio review events, curated exhibitions, juried shows and judged competitions including Critical Mass.

JUROR:  After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

She has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lishui Festival in China, the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona and Paris, and the Wallspace Gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara. In addition, her work is held in a number of museum collections.

JUROR:  It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

I am always on the hunt for great snack foods.  I crave a crunchy, salty snack to take with me on the go, but I try not to inhale garbage.  Well, I tripped across a fantastic one this weekend.  Baked Lentil Chips from Mediterranean Snacks.  Don’t groan; I promise it doesn’t taste like tree bark.  I had the Roasted Pepper, and I can’t wait to try the others.  This might be a cool snack for you to take on your photo shoot for this next call.  Happy Snacking!

Gail is also involved in the Mighty Tieton arts community in Eastern Washington.  From 1987 – 1991 she was the director of the Weston Gallery in California.

Degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in Art History & Painting from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Washington.  Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, she has been a resident of Washington state for over 30 years.

As I may have mentioned a few hundred times, we try to be very careful about what we eat.  Braising has become my alternative technique for cooking almost anything.  A TINY smidgen of olive oil in a non-stick pan allows me to caramelize veggies and meats, then I de-glaze the pan with a little water that helps steam the food to the proper temperature.  No frying needed.  This next show wants to see you alternative methods.  Might have to enter this one myself…

Whether it is in reaction to digital, or a hybrid process aided by the technology, these techniques remain as evocative as ever, bringing a unique style to present-day ideas. For Methods (Alternative), The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that use any alternative processing technique for any idea you wish to express.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

Hybrid or Combination images incorporating conventional (including digital) processes with hand-crafted applications are also eligible.  Conventional techniques such as Silver Gelatin, Digital, and C-prints are not eligible.

JUROR: Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose paintings and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including shows in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  The first edition of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Process, received unprecedented critical acclaim and was the winner of The Golden Light Technical Book of the Year award.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

I lost my poor meatball…

On top of Mt. LeConte, a few miles away (& above) my house, there is over two feet of snow.  It fell in OCTOBER (pictured left).  I hiked to Mt. LeConte Lodge and stayed the night back in May, enjoyed home cooked vittles, the supplies for which were trekked in by llamas (not kidding).  It is a rare and wonderful world we live in where such things occur.  This next Call wants to celebrate the rarity of our earth.  Investigate…

Rare Earth

 

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be.   Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be:  macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures.  They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe.  With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: 

It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977.  His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit.  Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine.  Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.
