My papaya won’t ripen; it has been in my kitchen window for a week. Ahhhh. I try to eat mostly locally sourced/grown food; however, I am not going to commit myself to a lifetime of no bananas or papaya or mango because I live in the wrong grow zone. As a result, some of the tropical fruits I buy are vastly under-ripe. I usually just gross my fingers and hope for the best. Lee teaches photography at UT & his efforts in the classroom have been honored with the University’s two highest teaching distinctions: the UT National Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award and the Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

CALL for ENTRIES: Trees 2016

Last Fall the local acorn crop failed, along with most of the hard mast. As a result, black bears suffered along with the deer, squirrels & jays; it is a primary food source in the Smokies. The bears were so hungry last year, more than 50 of them ended up at our local rescue. I am hopeful for this year’s crop. Every squirrel, chipmunk & jay that has crossed my path has done so with a green acorn in its mouth, or so it seems. Fingers crossed the trees don’t let all the little critters down this year. AWARDS: Winners will receive $3,000 in cash awards, be featured in a NY gallery exhibition (October 4-16, 2016 at the Jadite Gallery in the Hell’s Kitchen area in Manhattan), on the NYC4PA online gallery exhibit & in the TREES 2016 catalog. I’ve been teaching my son to cook. Well, I’ve been teaching my son to make food–that’s more accurate. He loves egg salad. So, we’ve begun with how to boil an egg and the importance of paprika. You’d be amazed at how often those two, simple factors can ruin egg salad. Just because they are easy or comfortable doesn’t make them less challenging in their own way. Knoxville Photo 2014

Hosted by the Arts & Culture Alliance, the second annual Knoxville Photo was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 photographic works from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Joe Longobardi, for exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Photography in four categories:

The Human Experience (streetscapes, cityscapes, and environmental portraiture)
Our Earth (landscapes, animals, nature – should not include man-made objects)
Travel (any subject or genre, taken while away from home)
Digital Imagination (digitally enhanced in the camera or in post-production, including composites, montages, abstracts)

DEADLINE: March 23, 2014

NOTIFICATION: April 7, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $30 for up to 3 images ($20 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to 7 add’l images may be submitted for $5/each ($4 for members/students).

JUROR: Joe Longobardi has worked professionally as a photographer for seven years in the Asheville, NC area engaging in editorial, portrait, documentary, and street photography. He attended the Art Institute of Boston where he studied fine art and Illustration. After art school, he worked as an Illustrator and cartoonist for numerous publications that included newspaper distributor King Features Syndicate.

Joe gradually made the move to photography as a means of personal expression employing both traditional darkroom and digital photography techniques and mediums. He exhibits locally and regionally in group and solo shows. Joe Longobardi has several books in the works featuring photographs of downtown Asheville that explore the city’s unique bohemian lifestyle.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards will be presented at the exhibition’s Opening Reception on May 2, 2014 at the Emporium. Awards include: $500 Best in Show, four $125 Best of Category awards, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member. Exhibiting artists will receive a catalog of the exhibition. Awards are as designated by the juror, whose decision is final.

Illumine

Light is that which compels a photograph into being: shifting, glowing, luminous, obscure or brilliant.

The medium of photography brazenly defined: How our tools, environs and subjects respond to light. Sometimes the light plays a more prominent role in a photograph, sometimes as a supporting actor and sometimes as the protagonist itself.

Low light, bright light and every stop in between. Light can be luminous & rich, or a stark spotlight, it can wildly dance, or softly edge darkness and cast shadows. Light can reflect and sparkle or be blinding and disarming. Natural light vs. man-made light sources: sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and neon light!

Photographs are steeped in emotive qualities that go well beyond the work’s subject and content, an almost indecipherable layer is em-parted through the usage of light.

JUROR: Robert Hirsch is an artist, curator, educator, historian and author of multiple books. His latest book, Transformational Imaging: Handmade Photography Since 1960 will be launched in March 2014 at the National Society for Photographic Education Conference in Baltimore.

Hirsch has been the Associate Editor of Photovision and Digital Camera (UK) as well as a contributing writer for Afterimage, CEPA Journal, Contact Sheet, and numerous regional publications including Buffalo Spree and FY. For over the past decade Hirsch has lead Light Research, a consulting firm providing professional services to the photographic arts field. He is the former Executive Director and Chief Curator of CEPA Gallery, Buffalo, NY, and has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions.

JUROR: Joe DiMaggio is an internationally known photographer who’s been making award winning photographs for four decades. His dynamic photographs have appeared in Time/Life, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, HBO and the list goes on. One of his Sports Illustrated covers was selected by Time Magazine as Picture of the Year. DiMaggio made the obvious transition to advertising work for fortune 500 companies and was extremely successful doing photo illustrations for companies such as AT&T, AOL, Barclays, Xerox, Computer Associates, HBO, RJR Nabisco, Sony, Verizon and Ford Motor Company. DiMaggio has contributed as an international pool photographer, to several Olympic Games.

JoAnne Kalish’s passion for photography came about at a young age. She was the first woman photographer hired to work for “Sports Illustrated” photographing various sporting events and their star athletes. She was contracted by the International Olympic Committee to provide photographic coverage of the 1984 Olympic Games.

Having contributed pictures to most major international publications such as Time Magazine, Der Speigel, Paris Match, and various others, she turned her attention to advertising work and personal projects, including her current Sensuality Series. In the advertising realm, she’s picked up numerous awards, receiving international acclaim for her Claritin and Sports Authority ad campaigns.

Five Elements

Photograph the beauty of nature, five elements provide the foundation for our entire physical world.

Earth, and everything on it, is the product of different combinations of the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Everything found in our world is unique because it contains a varying ratio of these five elements.

Whether walking headfirst into a gale of wind or digging our hands into the soil, we possess an inherent familiarity with the elements. All organic and inorganic substances are combinations of them, be it a time-polished rock or a shiny piece of plastic. A multitude of spiritual practices revolve around these five important pieces of the universe.

They are looking for photographic depictions of the natural world. Landscapes, macro & micro shots, abstractions & realistic images that capture the beauty, uniqueness and magic which makes up our planet.

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bay front.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 6th, 2014

NOTIFICATION:
Winning selections
will be announced online at embracingourdifferences.org by mid-March, 2014.

ENTRY FEE: None.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. At the judges’ discretion, an additional 6 “honorable mentions” may be selected.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

The theme for this exhibition is Medium. The juror is interested in how various mediums of photography are used to enhance an artist’s statement or intention in their work. Works are often most successful when the subject matter is paired well with the correct choice of medium – the two have a symbiotic relationship. Do you work in tintype, digital, film, platinum, gelatin silver, photogravure, etc? Show the greatest combination of your medium with your subject.

JUROR: Jennifer Schlesinger Hanson is an artist, curator, and educator based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She graduated from the College of Santa Fe in 1998 with a B.A. in Photography and Journalism and was an adjunct Professor there from 2005-2006. Schlesinger Hanson has exhibited widely at southwest regional institutions such as the Marion Center for Photographic Arts (SFUAD) and the Santa Fe Art Institute, as well as national institutions such as the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Chelsea Art Museum.

Her work has been published online and in print with international publications such as Black and White Magazine U.S and UK, Diffusion Magazine and Fotoritim. Schlesinger Hanson is represented in many public collections. Schlesinger Hanson’s own work uses various photographic mediums depending on the series she is working on. She is currently working in 19th Century albumen printing.

AWARDS: 1st Place: $300 Excellence in Photography Award, Sataporn Suravichai Memorial, Winner’s Exhibition Opportunity and one-year STAC Artist Membership. 2nd Place: $100 Award of Merit, Dr. & Mrs. Roger Gilmont Fund, Winner’s Exhibition Opportunity and One-year STAC Artist Membership.

Faces

An enduring fascination with the photographic portrait.

Each portrait reveals something of the sitter, the photographer and also of us as viewers. No one image can muster a whole and complete being, no matter how much we believe this could be so. This is the part of the photograph we create in our imagination, we fill in each crack and hole with a sort of personalized reasoning. And all these unknowns in the midst of true transparency.

Eye contact is made or retracted, body language boastful, reticent or indecipherable. Facial expressions can be hard at work or numbly slack. While subjects have a power over these photographic outcomes, it is the choice of the photographer to coax or mute said expressions for their artistic offering.

Submit work depicting people, selves, faces. People that baffle us with their complexities, personalities or simplistic nature. Make us question how this person existed at this particular place and time.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Elizabeth Avedon has forged her own path in the photography industry, collaborating with museums, publishing houses, galleries and artists. The former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe and Creative Director for The Gere Foundation, she has received awards and recognition for her exhibition design and publishing projects, including the retrospective exhibition and book: Avedon: 1949–1979 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; and Richard Avedon: In the American West for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. Elizabeth is a regular contributor to the Life.com award-winning Le Journal de la Photographie, profiling notable leaders in the world of Photography.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs. For commission details, go to the bottom of the Submission Rules page!
