There are a lot of reasons not to eat fried foods on a regular basis. You’ve heard most of them: blood pressure, heart disease, vitamin deficiency. Blah, blah, blah. You already know all of the logical reasons. So, let me proffer that fried food is the culinary equivalent of institutional gray. Do you really enjoy a plate of brown and beige food that all basically tastes beige? I hate to misappropriate the Skittles slogan, but taste the rainbow people. This next Call is the best reason to appreciate gray, but walk away from the beige, folks…

The world is a colorful place. Despite this, photographers often choose to excise color from the world they capture. Artists working in black and white eliminate the complexities of color to accentuate form, composition, and lighting. The world desaturated is in some ways made more vivid. For Grayscale, The Kiernan gallery seeks photographs of any subject matter that use and celebrate the vibrancy of monochrome.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography: Alternative processes, digital, traditional, and toned images are all eligible.

JUROR: Blue Mitchell is the Founding Editor of Diffusion: Unconventional Photography, an independent, reader and contributor supported annual that highlights and celebrates unconventional photographic processes and photo related artwork. In addition to organizing and curating physical exhibitions around the country, Mitchell curates Plates to Pixels, an online photographic gallery that bridges the gap between antiquated photographic processes and new digital media. He is a fine art photographer, educator, and graphic designer currently serving on the Board of Directors for Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell also teaches classes at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft’s studio school.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

Make Believe

Role-play, tell tall-tales, put on your brightest costume and let your imagination take the lead.

Images that captivate, tell a fantastical story. The hero vs. the monster, parallel universes co-mingling, colorful characters that drag us down a rabbit hole! Fantasy, horror, sci-fi, fairy-tale, steam-punk and renaissance inspired photographs.

Just as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein emerged from a dream, her motley creation is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction and a great novel for the ages, Darkroom asks you to produce and capture your dreams. “The whole series of my life appeared to me as a dream; I sometimes doubted if indeed it were all true, for it never presented itself to my mind with the force of reality.”― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Create your legend, weave your web and spin your yarns. Contact your inner child and dive head-first into a treasure trove of costumes. This exhibit will be on display over Halloween, so make it spooky.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

ENTRY FEE: Up to 4 images for $24 US for on-line and $29 for email submission

JUROR: Growing up in a small Louisiana town, Andy Bloxham turned to his imagination for activity. This playful, creative approach to life extended to Andy’s adulthood, where it took form in photography, video, and writing. Receiving an MFA in photography from Louisiana Tech University, his images have appeared throughout the world in numerous group and solo exhibitions, publications, and online media.

Bloxham’s photography centers around fictional situations and events, told through the slight hint of a smirking camera. His techniques apply the command of tools ranging from pen, paper, and storyboards, to strobe lighting and digital post-processing. He is an assistant professor of photography at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and a faculty member at the Maine Media Workshops.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. My kitchen is clean-ish. Can you eat off my floors? Absolutely not. I am pretty good about cleaning as I cook so there isn’t a disaster to clean up afterward. And, crumb-y counters are my pet peeve; so I keep them wiped down. But despite my best efforts, I have an ant problem. I find a dozen or so small black ants on my kitchen counters every time I go in. I’m tempted to incorporate them into my next recipe just to send a message to the rest of their kind. This next Call could be a reason to spare their little lives, or not…

Ah, the mysterious world of the insect. Some are cute and cuddly, like the furry caterpillar. Some are fierce and scary, wearing their skeletons on the outside to frighten us. Some are artistic and majestic like the beautiful butterfly. And some are just downright romantic, like the firefly on a warm summer evening.

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own. Like humans, bugs are everywhere! So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly! Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years or older

DEADLINE: August 3, 2013

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee of $25 for up to 5 images. Add’l $5 each.

JUROR: Andrew Overtoom is an award winning filmmaker and photographer living in Los Angeles. He publishes THE UNDEAD NEG photography blog and is currently launching a quarterly fine art photography journal. He is also the owner/curator of 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

AWARDS: Approximately 50 works will be chosen from submitted photographs to be included in the I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR exhibition at 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Additional works may also be selected for an online gallery exhibition page.

SALES: The gallery retains 50% of the sale price, as well as 9.25% California sales tax. The 1650 Gallery offers free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. Photo sizes are 8×10″, 11×14″ 16×20″, or 20×24″.

Eating in the car is dangerous. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve done my share of car consumption. The back floorboard of my car looks like a fast food trash can sometimes. But on my way home yesterday, I watched a young woman t-bone a truck with her compact car while munching on a burger. Her view seemed blocked by the wax paper wrapper. I’m just saying, “Be careful out there.” This next Call is another reason to keep your eyes on the street. Great show…

JUROR: John N Wall is a photographer and educator from Raleigh, NC. A native of North Carolina, he is a member of the faculty at NC State University. He has exhibited his work in solo and group shows across North Carolina and the South, and has won numerous awards in regional and national competitions. His work has been supported by grants from the United Arts Council of Wake County.

Wall holds a Certificate in Documentary Photography from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Wall maintains Southern Photography: The Blog about Fine Art Photography in the American South, named one of the 100 Best Sites for Photographers in 2013 by the folks at PhotographyDegrees.org.

I have a lot of kitchen toys, but most of them are small, manually-operated hand gadgets. Honestly, I’m not sure I could cook without a manual juice reamer or my mandolin. I usually forego the big, shiny electric appliances, but I recently gave in to a beautiful tangerine colored Cuisinart ice cream maker. It looks like a toy, but it produces masterpieces. A little kefir milk, a few raspberries and a scrape of vanilla bean is all it takes. This next Call wants to see the masterpiece you can create with a toy. Expect the unexpected. The Nave Gallery and Washington Street Art Center have in the past separately held toy camera photography shows. They are now joining together to create an international festival in Somerville, MA celebrating the quirky and creative results that happen when the photographer is forced to loosen his/her controls.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography. For the Somerville Toy Camera Fest (STCF), “toy camera” is identified as any low-end, low-tech, limited-control camera, including Holga, Diana and other Lomo products, as well as Brownies and Anscos and any pinhole cameras. Images made from Polaroid film backs attached to Holga are welcome; straight Polaroid camera pictures are not. Cell phone images are welcome.

DEADLINE: July 24, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 5 images

JUROR: Isa Leshko is a fine art photographer living in Philadelphia, PA. She has had solo exhibitions at the Corden|Potts Gallery, the Galveston Arts Center, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Houston Center for Photography, the Silver Eye Center for Photography, and the Richard Levy Gallery. Her prints are in numerous private and public collections including the Boston Public Library, the Harry Ransom Center, Haverford College, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Isa’s work is represented by the Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco, CA and the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.

“Above all, I want to see images that evoke a strong emotion — joy, fear, sadness, anger, revulsion — or challenge the way I think. Toy camera imagery is about defying photographic conventions. AWARDS: People’s Choice Award (for each location): 1 Holga 144-120 Medium Format 120N Camera with Built-in Lens, 3 Honorable mention juror awards (for each location). There will be three separate exhibitions as part of the Somerville Toy Camera Fest. The juror will decide final placement of work that is accepted: The Washington Street Arts Center (August 10-31, 2013), The Nave Gallery (September 7-28, 2013), and The Nave Annex (September 11-29, 2013).
