Make Believe

Role-play, tell tall-tales, put on your brightest costume and let your imagination take the lead.

Images that captivate, tell a fantastical story. The hero vs. the monster, parallel universes co-mingling, colorful characters that drag us down a rabbit hole! Fantasy, horror, sci-fi, fairy-tale, steam-punk and renaissance inspired photographs.

Just as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein emerged from a dream, her motley creation is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction and a great novel for the ages, Darkroom asks you to produce and capture your dreams. “The whole series of my life appeared to me as a dream; I sometimes doubted if indeed it were all true, for it never presented itself to my mind with the force of reality.”― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Create your legend, weave your web and spin your yarns. Contact your inner child and dive head-first into a treasure trove of costumes. This exhibit will be on display over Halloween, so make it spooky.

JUROR: Growing up in a small Louisiana town, Andy Bloxham turned to his imagination for activity. This playful, creative approach to life extended to Andy’s adulthood, where it took form in photography, video, and writing. Receiving an MFA in photography from Louisiana Tech University, his images have appeared throughout the world in numerous group and solo exhibitions, publications, and online media.

Bloxham’s photography centers around fictional situations and events, told through the slight hint of a smirking camera. His techniques apply the command of tools ranging from pen, paper, and storyboards, to strobe lighting and digital post-processing. He is an assistant professor of photography at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and a faculty member at the Maine Media Workshops.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

My kitchen is clean-ish. Can you eat off my floors? Absolutely not. I am pretty good about cleaning as I cook so there isn’t a disaster to clean up afterward. And, crumb-y counters are my pet peeve; so I keep them wiped down. But despite my best efforts, I have an ant problem. I find a dozen or so small black ants on my kitchen counters every time I go in. I’m tempted to incorporate them into my next recipe just to send a message to the rest of their kind. This next Call could be a reason to spare their little lives, or not…

Ah, the mysterious world of the insect. Some are cute and cuddly, like the furry caterpillar. Some are fierce and scary, wearing their skeletons on the outside to frighten us. Some are artistic and majestic like the beautiful butterfly. And some are just downright romantic, like the firefly on a warm summer evening.

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own. Like humans, bugs are everywhere! So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly! Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years or older

JUROR: Andrew Overtoom is an award winning filmmaker and photographer living in Los Angeles. He publishes THE UNDEAD NEG photography blog and is currently launching a quarterly fine art photography journal. He is also the owner/curator of 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

AWARDS: Approximately 50 works will be chosen from submitted photographs to be included in the I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR exhibition at 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Additional works may also be selected for an online gallery exhibition page.

Eating in the car is dangerous. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve done my share of car consumption. The back floorboard of my car looks like a fast food trash can sometimes. But on my way home yesterday, I watched a young woman t-bone a truck with her compact car while munching on a burger. Her view seemed blocked by the wax paper wrapper. I’m just saying, “Be careful out there.” This next Call is another reason to keep your eyes on the street. Great show…

JUROR: John N Wall is a photographer and educator from Raleigh, NC. A native of North Carolina, he is a member of the faculty at NC State University. He has exhibited his work in solo and group shows across North Carolina and the South, and has won numerous awards in regional and national competitions. His work has been supported by grants from the United Arts Council of Wake County.

Wall holds a Certificate in Documentary Photography from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Wall maintains Southern Photography: The Blog about Fine Art Photography in the American South, named one of the 100 Best Sites for Photographers in 2013 by the folks at PhotographyDegrees.org.

I usually believe in moderation in all things, but lately I’m finding myself on the extremes of all the food issues out there–from dairy to beef, wheat to sugar. It seems as though everyone has a very black and white view on what is and is not good for you. Did you every thing there would be a vegetable that you were NOT supposed to eat? Me either, but corn is apparently my new nemesis. Go figure. I try to turn a blind eye to those beautiful ears, but it would be easier if I could be selectively color blind. Trust me…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Color-Blind

The inability
to distinguish one or
more chromatic colors,
distinction of space
by the edges of
darkness and light.

Color plays an important role in how we perceive the world around us. So when you take that information away what do you get in return? Without color, other elements of the photograph take on a more distinct role in telling the story. Notice how lighting, contrast, and composition are much more important in monochromatic images.

Black & white photography is a timeless art; always relevant, always contemporary despite being so historically ancient. The juror Matthew Gamber states, “There is something about how when you photograph something in black and white, it gets locked in that time frame where it just becomes obsolete as an everyday seeing experience.”

Whether you are a darkroom purist or a Photoshop crafter, show them your love for hue-less images. They want your best black and white or alternative process photographs. Pay tribute to the origins of photography.

I grew up right outside of Atlanta, but I’ve never really been a city girl. I love downtown anywhere as a temporary destination, but home is always somewhere rural for me. I know who propagated the giant basil plant in my herb garden. I know who to call when I run out of ramps. The City is intoxicating, but I’ll just stay put except for vacation if that’s okay. Nothing in the city is stopping, nothing is slow. There’s never a moment of silence, a moment alone. Horns honking, people talking, vendors yelling, children laughing, doors opening & doors closing. The city has a beat, a rhythm, a constant ebb & flow. Strangers brushing shoulders, lovers holding hands, catch it all in an instant. Because in an instant it will be gone.

All except the buildings. The stoic silence of these structures juxtaposes all the life. Distinct architecture, setting the scene, a beauty so quiet in a sea of so much noise. Each brick tells a story. They are characters in this play of city life.

JUROR: Stephen Perloff The founder and editor of The Photo Review, a critical journal of international scope publishing since 1976, and editor of The Photograph Collector, the leading source of information on the photography art market.

Perloff was the recipient of the Sol Mednick Award for 2000 from the Mid-Atlantic region of the Society for Photographic Education, the first annual Vanguard Award from the Philadelphia Center for the Photographic Image in 2007, and the Colin Ford Award from the Royal Photographic Society in 2012.

His photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions and reside in many museum and private collections. He has curated more than a score of exhibitions, including “Philadelphia Past and Present” at the Philadelphia Art Alliance for the city’s tricentennial in 1982. He was the curator of the acclaimed series “Photography: Contemporary Prospect” at Historic Yellow Springs (1994–2001), the retrospective exhibition “Andrea Baldeck: The Heart of the Matter” at the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia (January–March 2007); and “Saving Face,” an exhibition of portraits drawn from the collection of Robert Infarinato at the Michener (November 2008 – March 2009).

JUROR: Mark Sink, photographer, curator and teacher, has been and making a living from fine art photography since 1978. He is well known for his imagery made with the toy plastic camera the Diana. Currently, also a reverse technology, he is producing collodion wet plate photographs. His personal work is in numerous museum collections as well as gallery solo and group shows in the US, South America and Europe. He is currently represented by G. Ray Hawkins in CA. Robin Rice in NY, Paul Cava in Philadelphia, Rule Gallery in Denver. As a photographer of fine art he worked with and documented noted artists lives and their work such as Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat and Rene Ricard.

Kristen Hatgi was born in Denver Colorado on the 24th of December 1984. At the age of twelve she borrowed her dad’s camera to create staged situations in her room. At sixteen she took a photography class at her high school and was thereafter committed to the medium. Her love for art and photography carried her to Boston where she spent five years studying at the Art Institute of Boston.

Kristen graduated with a bachelor in Fine Arts in May of 2008. Kristen lives in Denver where she collaborates with her husband Mark Sink creating wet plate collodion photographs. She also works as a commercial photographer, and designer and has exhibited her photography in NYC, Boston, DC, and Denver.

Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. There is a performative aspect to this genre. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, and able to choose how they would like to the world to see them.

The photographer invites judgment and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the “second self” that appears when artist becomes subject.

JUROR: Stephen Sheffield, a native of the Boston area, is an alumnus of Cornell University, where he obtained a BFA in painting and photography. He received his MFA in photography from the California College of the Arts, in Oakland/San Francisco, studying under Larry Sultan and Jean Finley.

His photographs, often self-portraits depict both everyday and unusual events, all framed by his unique, and occasionally dark, sense of humor. His masterful storytelling, use of traditional silver, alternative processes, mural printing, and large-scale photo assemblage bring to his work a unique and cinematic mood.

Stephen has exhibited nationally for over 20 years, and has a number of large and small-scale commissions in, Boston, Cambridge and Brooklyn NY. He has worked out of his studio in Boston’s Fort Point for over 18 years. Stephen is represented locally by the Panopticon gallery, and runs the advanced black and white silver photography major at the New England School of Photography in Boston.

JUROR: Andrew Overtoom is an award winning filmmaker and photographer living in Los Angeles. He publishes THE UNDEAD NEG photography blog and is currently launching a quarterly fine art photography journal. He is also the owner/curator of 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

AWARDS: Approximately 50 works will be chosen from submitted photographs to be included in the I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR exhibition at 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Additional works may also be selected for an online gallery exhibition page.

SALES: The gallery retains 50% of the sale price, as well as 9.25% California sales tax. The 1650 Gallery offers free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. Photo sizes are 8×10″, 11×14″ 16×20″, or 20×24″.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Knoxville Photo 2013

Hosted by the Arts & Culture Alliance, the first annual Knoxville Photo 2013 was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 photographic works from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, R.L. Gibson, for exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Photography in four categories:

The Human Experience (streetscapes, cityscapes, and environmental portraiture)
Our Earth (landscapes, animals, nature – should not include man-made objects)
Travel (any subject or genre, taken while away from home)
Digital Imagination (digitally enhanced in the camera or in post-production, including composites, montages, abstracts)

DEADLINE: May 19, 2013

NOTIFICATION: June 10, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $30 for up to 3 images ($20 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to 7 add’l images may be submitted for $5/each ($4 for members/students).

JUROR: R.L. Gibson is a nationally-shown artist working and “living on vacation” in Gatlinburg, Tennessee with work in galleries from New York to Los Angeles. Gibson opened her newest Xerography series Psychomachia with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli. She is now working on a text series for show in 2013/2014. Gibson works almost exclusively as a Xerographist, producing complicated layered photographic compositions and then hand-transferring these images to a variety of substrates resulting in a unique monotype.

In addition to producing her own work and work in collaboration with other artists, Gibson also runs ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, a fun and quirky, food-themed art blog that offers reviews of emerging artists, shows from great galleries, and FREE Art Deadlines and Calls for Entry as an artist’s resource.

AWARDS: At least $600 in cash awards will be presented at the exhibition’s Opening Reception on July 5 at the Emporium. Awards include: $200 Best in Show, four $100 Best of Category awards, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member. In addition, the juror will provide written comments on all entries. Awards are as designated by the juror, whose decision is final.

SALES: Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by the Arts & Culture Alliance, who retains a 25% commission (20% for cash and check sales).
