CALL for SUBMISSIONS: 2019 Annmarie AiR

Learn more about the 2019 Summer Residency from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center!

for the love of DAIRY

I did NOT eat haggis in Scotland while in residency.  No one offered it to me.  It wasn’t on any menu that I saw.  No one suggested that I should make or order it –except every person I know in the United States, ha. I did, however, give in to hot tea, drink liter after liter of unhomoginized, “gently pasteurized” local milk and ate a shameful number of all-butter Scottish shortbread biscuits.  I ate boatloads of Dutch gouda and an embarrassing amount of brie from the local cheese shop.  And the spinach quiche and sun-dried tomato bread from the local bakery was sinful.  You do Scotland your way, I did it mine.  The biggest news is how I approached my work differently…

I went to another continent, worked 80+ hours a week and came home with three small pieces of completed work.  I spent 8 solid hours of work on an area the size of a silver dollar.   I could NEVER do that at my home studio uninterrupted.  I spent thirty hours over 3 days working & re-working a 2″ x 4″ section of stitching. I could NEVER do that at my home studio without massive frustration.  Residency is the hardest thing to do.  It is undistracted, unobstructed time to experiment and succeed and fail without excuse (that’s the hard part).  Residency time is priceless.  THIS residency is a working residency that requires working with the public on a project.  If it lights you up, if you can envision the project and can’t wait to get started, please don’t miss this chance.  Don’t let doubt or all the things you think you need to be get in the way.  Just submit the project.  Don’t worry about what happens if they say “yes” or if they say “no”.  Take the chance because it could change the course of how you work and of how you approach your work forever.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for 2019 Summer Residency. There is no entry fee, plus there is a stipend, project funding, housing and more.  This is one of those rare opportunities.  Please investigate to see if it is the right fit for you…

2019 Summer Residency
 from Annmarie

“The summer residency program provides a serene place on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay for visual, musical, and literary artists to design and produce a community arts project. Most artists run their project through Annmarie’s creative reuse center, called the artLAB, where artists are encouraged to incorporate recycled or repurposed materials into their project. Residencies are meant to focus on community arts projects; those that merge arts and the environment are particularly desirable. ” –from annmariegarden.org

I don’t stock saffron in my pantry.  As much as I love the opulence & indulgence of a saffron-scented paella, the truth is that I get more mileage from luscious fats like unfiltered olive oil or nutty sesame oil.  I can only punctuate my menus with such an elaborate spice on occasion, but I use oils in every dish.  Opulence is user-defined & experiential, and this next Call wants your vision of the opulent.  Take a look…

SALAD
anyone?

My frugality DOES know boundaries.  The one thing I don’t do is public foraging.  It isn’t that I am necessarily opposed to eating wild things, like dandelion greens.  Actually, I’m all for it, to be honest.  But I am fearful of things unknown that might be sprayed ONTO the wild things.  I live on the boundary (within a 1/2 mile) of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but since you cannot legally forage in any National Park, that doesn’t really help me find a safe place to forage. I suppose my wild things will be limited to art, for now–like this next Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sweetwater Center for the Arts (Sewickley, PA) for Wild Things, an exhibit of art with unrestrained spirit.  What more could you want than a description like that?

GREENS

Truly living green in the kitchen is a touch complicated.  Yes, I can buy locally sourced, sustainable foods.  But, as we work toward designing a  kitchen for the straw bale house we plan to build this year, do I really have it in me to skip out on a traditional stove/oven for a wood-burning or rocket stove/oven?  Not so sure.  But while I’m contemplating it, I can at least submit sustainably-themed work for this next Call.  How about you?

PLEASE

I’ve had a few jobs and a few careers.  One that I loved more than most was as a Downtown Development Director.  I believed in the tiny town; I believe in urban renewal in rural locations (pop. 3500).  Alas, my time there was shortened to a mere 3 years.  I’ve never admitted this before, but part of my impatience with the development process was my inability to attract new, exciting food opportunities.  Really.  This next Call is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of making ART the answer.  Please investigate this FANTASTIC opportunity…

In the ongoing saga of kitchen creativity, my most recent attempt at mint chocolate chip went a little off course.  Who new 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract would be too much in 1 1/2 quarts of ice cream.  Just trust me on this one.  I suppose this was a drawback to complete kitchen freedom, ha.  May this next Call for creative freedom be more successful for you than my mint ice cream experiment.  It isn’t just for filmmakers…

Film & video have become easily accessible. One can watch content on a website, television, a home projector, or even a cell phone. For some artists and filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. MNA believes there is a magic in seeing the film projected as a print.  There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing.  There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when seeing a band live.  For these reasons MNA encourages live music, performance and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen.  MNA asks that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance.  Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event.
