AWARDS: Up to 32 two-dimensional artists working with paper will be selected to participate in this unique exhibition opportunity. Four works by each selected artist will be displayed over a two-month period, two works per artist, each month.

I prefer thought-out, composed meals with true intention. But, let’s face it…that doesn’t always happen. Today, my lunch included two olive & cream cheese stuffed pieces of celery, a deviled egg, a pickled beet, two slices of fresh tomato and two pickles. The only thing composed was the beautiful square plate. Truly, it was a collage of anything I could find that didn’t have to be cooked. This next Call wants your collage, AND they want it square. I have always preferred chocolate in my stomach, not necessarily on my face–unless it got there on its way to my stomach. But as my journey toward a simpler life continues. I am fascinated by the foodstuffs that can be used for non-culinary purposes. I’ve used coconut oil on my hair and avocado on my skin for a long time. But did you know that you can use cocoa as a colorant in a food-based face powder. I’d put on weight if I had to breathe in the smell of cocoa all day. But, it will still make me look at what I wear on my face differently. Hopefully this next Call will make you look at faces a little differently too…

Portraiture is one of the most prevalent and widely interpreted art genres. The Kiernan Gallery seeks portfolio submissions for a solo exhibition as its Spring Featured Artist.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All 2D non-photographic media that depicts the subject’s expression, personality, or mood are encouraged.

NOTIFICATION: Approx. 8 days after deadline

ENTRY FEE: $50 for 8-10 images

AWARDS: The Spring Featured Artist will have their work occupy the entirety of a room in the main gallery. The featured artist will receive: A one-month solo show, a feature on The Kiernan Gallery’s blog and website, and an electronic show card designed and distributed by The Kiernan Gallery.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. The Kiernan Gallery DOES still have incentive to sell your work. The gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation, digital, video and performance.

ENTRY FEE: $35 (USD) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 10.

JURORS: Each art collector may select one or more pieces by artists that are not currently represented in their private collection. Collectors’ names will be kept anonymous until the opening reception. Editor’s Note: My assumption is these are collectors that purchase work in the Sylvia White Gallery. Because they are anonymous, the best recommendation I have for research is to spend some time investigate the artists the gallery represents, since in theory, it is their work these collectors are purchasing–at least in part.

AWARDS: Selected artists will participate in 2014 Collector’s Choice exhibit April 23rd to May 24th, 2014 at Sylvia White Gallery.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 40% commission will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.

CALL for MAIL ART: Temporality

I only feel justified making pavlova during a holiday week. Pavlova (like the one at left by Tanya Zouevis) a little like two meringues kiss–through sweetened whipped cream. I think it has to do with the temporary nature of the fragile, crispy meringue and the fluffy (but easily flattened) whipped cream. We’ve just finished with New Year’s Day, and I’m already looking for a holiday. MLK Jr. Day doesn’t usually strike me as a day earmarked for indulgence. What’s after the next holiday? HAPPY NEW food YEAR!

It’s January, and we’re thrilled to be in 2014! I am joyfully looking forward to a new year. 2013 was a year of growth for my family, my art, and for AAAD. There were wonderful food highlights including a renewed interest in baking. And AAAD covered some fantastic opportunities in 2013 and even more fantastic artists. Which leads us to our proud announcement…

Today we name the
2013 Artist of the Year!

When AAAD began in 2009, I was determined to cover art deadlines, and more importantly, artists producing really good ART. And, after I chose a few artists, I quickly realized that the Featured Artist program needed structure, or it would never really get done on any sort of regular basis. That is how the Featured Artist Contest was born. (The Featured Artist program was retired in 2015 and replaced with the Artist of the Day program.)

The Featured Artist Page was getting crowded and each post was lessening the impact. I began archiving artists yearly, and the Artist of the Year was born.

I now give all of our Featured Artists each year notice that at the end of the year, the Artist of the Year will be determined by the number of comments on their individual Featured Artist blog posts.

Congratulations to Sima Schloss,
AAAD’s 2013 Artist of the Year

I followed up with Sima to find out what’s new: “Yay!! Thanks so much- Im so honored to be the winner!!! Whats going on now with my work now? Lets seeI am one of the winners of ArtAscent Magazine’s Dark Issue (December, 2013) ArtAscent.com, and my work ‘New Sheriff’ is featured on the cover!!! I have a group show in the works coming this Spring (details in the near future), and a collaboration in the works as well. I’m also in process of revamping my website!”

And new foods? Are there any new tasty morsels inspiring you? “I had the most incredible Brussels sprouts at my friends place the other night! I think I’ve only tried them a couple of times in my life, but these were outstanding. They were cooked in garlic & oil and had some incredible seasoning--I was in heaven! I’ve also really been into red and yellow peppers as well, they are so great with labneh (an incredible lebanese dip) hummus or guacamole.” Editor’s note: I’ve rediscovered the mini sweet peppers in my produce aisle. They have a milder flavor and crisper texture and ROCK stirfry dishes.

I have enjoyed getting to know you, Sima. I am inspired by your work. It is an expression of freedom, limitless potential and self awareness. I LOVE the work, and I’ve enjoyed forging a slow and easy friendship. YOU were my reward for choosing to feature your WORK. Thank you, Sima, for being a highlight of the AAAD year! I used to receive food in the mail. In the past, my out-of-state relatives would send me those meat and cheese boxes. You know the ones–processed cheese, Summer sausage, red and white checked box. But, I have convinced them to stop with the weird boxes of food and to start sending me personal hand-written recipes. Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bay front.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 6th, 2014

NOTIFICATION:
Winning selections
will be announced online at embracingourdifferences.org by mid-March, 2014.

ENTRY FEE: None.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. At the judges’ discretion, an additional 6 “honorable mentions” may be selected.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

I write a whole lot of crap about food. Most of it is just an off the cuff note about whatever is going on in my kitchen. But it is NEVER meant as a judgment about the way YOU eat. One of FB friends updated her status yesterday with a comment about how people who eat cheese, fruit and veggies cold, as opposed to room temp, have clearly given up on life and are just eating garbage. Really? I am sorry my cold strawberry has flagged me as a useless garbage eater. So, I want to be clear. No judgement from me. Do I want you to eat creme-filled snack cakes? No. Do I love you any less for it? No, I’m just a little jealous. This next Call is an for an all hung exhibit. No judgement there either…

Art via Post is a project that brings together international artists of all ages and types who send art in the form of mail. The envelope or package becomes the art itself. The envelope is the canvas. Some artists incorporate the mailing address and stamp in their work, others use the blank side as their work space. Medium types include Illustrators, calligraphers, paper artists, graffiti artists and stencilers among others. Anything goes. The message is up to the sender.
