I find myself rehearsing half-hearted apologies for the decisions to step off the edge of the earth, or so it feels, in pursuit of adventure and truly living in the coming years.  I am taking baby steps toward a goal, but feel an immediate, obligatory sense of guilt creep up on me after every accomplishment.  Proud but guilty. Excited but apologetic. Emotional semantics. 

Seeing the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Marissa J. Menefee, I thought, “this artist understands the circles in which I spin and spin and spin.”  Thanks, Marissa.

I enjoy creative process.  I find it meditative.  My own visual work requires lots of repetition.  I like to knit.  More repetition.  I have a handful of favorite recipes. Even more repetition.  As a result, I often end up in looping rut of repetition.  In the kitchen, I break the sameness by trying a recipe outside my comfort zone. (Today gumbo, tomorrow doughnuts;)  When working visually, I find a themed Call that dictates the inspiration not only helps me start a new piece, but it sometimes marks the beginning of a whole new direction.  This Call is a paying opportunity too, which I appreciate albeit meager.  Maybe it is right for you…

Recipes are sort of like guide books for me.  I have no interest in doing exactly what they say, but they are a great jumping-off point.  There are exceptions, thousands of them.  See “baking”.  Baking is a science.  Baklava, croissant, sourdough, layer cakes–making them is either complicated or at the very least time-consuming, but the pay off is HUGE.  This next Call is like that.  There are a LOT of details, so read the prospectus in full, but the pay of is huge.  First prize is $120,000, and it isn’t limited to representational work.  Take a look at this one…

People risk their lives to protect water, and where I live, people just lost their lives in want of water.  I live in Cobbly Nob in Gatlinburg. On Monday, we realized Webb Mountain was on fire.  As we fled our yard was on fire.  Amazingly, our house escaped unscathed.  The fear is/was real; we can talk about that later. I just can’t yet. MEDIA:  Water based pigments on paper must constitute the major portion of the work. With xenophobia rocking every continent these days, I find myself drawn to universal symbols and signs and habits.  I love seeing clotheslines the world over –streetlamps, sidewalks, door knockers.  We are so much more alike than we are different.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sunga Park, takes me around the world, but the details land me right back on my doorstep.

ARTIST of the DAY: Vivienne Strauss

When I came home from the hospital with my bouncing baby boy so many years ago, I found a bottle of cold duck in my fridge –a gift from my mother.  Not champagne.  Cold Duck.  This particular variety was a blend of port & champagne.  I never asked her why, and I’ve never had it since.  But, after a pregnancy free from alcohol for both myself and my husband, it only took a glass a piece to make us a little giddy and able to let go of the fears and stress of being a new parent, if only for an hour or so.  It is a fond, silly memory that I treasure.  When I came across this work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Vivienne Strauss, it put a smile on my face.  The perfect complement. A self-taught painter with a background in Philosophy, Vivienne Strauss works predominately in oil and watercolor. Her paintings often migrating around the humor of being human – shared dejection, things left unsaid, false arrogance, disbelief, inspired irony. She is an observer and chronicler, in the actual world in which she exists and in the world of characters she creates, exposing, with precise wit, the subterranean elements lying in wait beneath the deceptively quotidian.
