CALL for ENTRIES: Sextet III

Learn more about the Sextet III exhibit at the Limner Gallery!

a DOZEN delights

I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens.  I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6).  I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat.  I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier.  None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10?  While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show.  Are you one of six?

Check out this Call for Entries from Slow Art Productions for Sextet III at the Limner Gallery (Hudson, NY). $36 entry open to all media and all artists.  Take a look…

CRAVING connections

Sometimes I find myself in an awkward moment standing with a stranger on a grocery aisle while we both debate the merits of one brand of product against another –anchovy paste, pickled watermelon rind or powdered peanut butter, for example.  Do two people both interested in watermelon rind automatically have something in common aside from a taste in food?  I often wonder as I stand there silently next to them, whether our lives have other odd points of intersection.  Are we birds of a feather?  This next Call is all about the birds.  Take a look…

groovy FOOD

I am finally in the groove of cooking for two.  Since my kid left for college, there have been A LOT of leftovers crowding my freezer, but it is getting better.  When he comes home for a weekend, it often takes me a week to recover my cooking-for-two-ness, but it is better than it used to be.  Just remember: 1 zucchini per person, 1 potato per meal, buy broccoli crowns, not bunches; it’s a groove thing. This next Call wants you to get in the groove too.  Take a look…

sprouts of SPRING

Green onions are among the first shoots sent up in Spring.   They taste like the more refined cousin of wild onions whose smell I associate with fresh-cut grass.  The greens are only fresh for a few days, but the bulbs protect themselves by turning outer layers into a husk-like spring jacket.  The green, slightly bitter bite they offer quiche is high on my list of favorite flavors.  This next Call is also one of my favorites of Spring.   Take a look…

Partial boxes and bags and cans of food drive me crazy.  I am too “thrifty” to get rid that extra half cup of evaporated milk or quarter box of pasta.  As a result my menu has become a litany of recipes that recycle the odds and ends that happen as a result of making the foods I actually intended to make.   This next Call wants your art make from all things recycled.  This is a great show.  Don’t miss the early bird deadline just days away!

swirl & DRIZZLE

Kitchen creativity is all about the art of substitution.  I find that I am okay with juice instead of syrup in many dishes, but in savory dishes, I find oil replacements frequently leave me missing something.  Have you had an olive packed in oil versus an olive packed in oil?  There is no comparison.  I’ll take a drizzle of sesame oil over almost anything.  This next Call is all about the oils.  Take a look…

screaming GREENS

As we approach the New Year, I keep having flashbacks to a screaming pressure cooker preparing collard greens each New Year’s Day. The sounds & smells have been spurred on because of my new electric pressure cooker, a gift from my mother for Christmas. Yes, I know that I normally shy away from large, trendy gadgets, but I just couldn’t resist.  This one does more & replaces other small appliances, so I’m giving it a whirl.  I’ve had two successful attempts in a row — Swiss steak then pork chops with apples.  Maybe collard greens next.  This next Call wants your reflections on the holidays.  You likely have work for this one…

childhood FAVORITES.

I spent part of this weekend in a Virginia State Park.  Every year the park lights their train tunnel and serves hot chocolate & s’mores while musicians echo familiar carols in the background.  As the temperature dropped to the mid-thirties, I made my way to concessions & was handed a steaming paper cup with a plastic spoon to stir my powdered mix.  After my first sugary sip, I was transported to my childhood, as if by time machine, complete with melted marshmallow mustache.  Thanks to Natural Tunnel State Park for the trip. ♥  This next Call wants your vision of the passage of time.  Take a look…
