My father found steak sauce personally offensive.  He thought that the use of steak sauce was a not so subtle indication that his grilling skills were not up to par.  “The steak is perfect as it is,” he would say at every grilling opportunity.  I suppose it is a lesson learned.  Sometimes a steak is a steak, and a steak should be good enough.  Representational art, FOR ME, can sometimes be likened to a sauceless steak, wonderful as it is…just not my preference.  I know some of you do fantastic representational work, and I have a twinge of guilt that I don’t post more shows for you.  Hopefully this one will make up a little ground…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 21st Annual National Exhibition of Representational Oil Painings from Oil Painters of America to be exhibited at the Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado. The cost is high because you have to be a member, but the prizes are huge.  Make me proud…

It is a happy, shiny New Year, and I am excited about the possibilities. Per usual, I am optimistic about the future… nauseatingly optimistic, according to my husband Jon.  However, most folks will also tell you that my attitude toward life is often like my taste in food…direct, unapologetic and undiplomatic. Can food be unapologetic and undiplomatic?  Absolutely. Have you ever met a cheese named Limberger? That sort of straight forwardness is what drew me to this next Call.  Investigate…

Check out the Call for Entries from the Light, Space & Time Gallery for their online Landscapes competition. You know that I am not a huge fan of online competitions; however, I think of this as digital publication which is always a good thing. anyone?

Heart smart foods have become the norm in my house.  I have scary-low blood pressure, and my doc says it makes me far less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.  However, my husband is one of those string beans that can consume 5000 calories per day.  If Captain Consumption is going to grow old with me, the meats are going to have to be lean, the vegetables plentiful, whole grains a constant and cheese…just an occasional indulgence.  This next show is in the Heartland; do you think they eat any heart-healthier there?  Let me know…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Merriam Parks & Recreation for the 16th Annual Heartland Artist Exhibition at the Irene B. French Art Gallery (Merriam, KS).  A reasonable entry fee, great awards and low commission.  This could be ideal for some of you…

I want to love apples, but truth be known, I don’t.  Due to my proximity to multiple apple orchards, my not loving apples seems a little tragic.  So, I keep going to the orchards, and I keep buying different varieties in the hopes that one result in an OMG moment.  The Arkansas Black variety was nice, but I’m still looking.  I had the try-and-try again attitude with painting for a long time, and every once in a while, I still get the painting bug.  But, to date, I am not a good painter.  This Call is meant for the good painters out there.  Take a look…

STICKY SWEET

When I think of salt water taffy, I think of the mountains. Odd, eh? I suspect that salt water taffy got its start on seaside boardwalks, but it seems every small mountain town has a great little store front that lets you watch taffy being made.
