take two & call me after BREAKFAST

Food as medicine has been on my radar for a decade.  I appreciate the ability to attempt home remedies through food and supplements.  I am not suggesting it is easier, nor am I suggestion it is a solution for all ailments.  But, I am intrigued.  A family history of arthritis, combined with years of a slight addiction to towering high heels, has resulted in massive joint pain in one of feet.  Flair ups are completely manageable with a combination of tart cherries & massive quantities of vitamin C.  Drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy is now often treated by mainstream medicine with a ketogenic diet.  The collaboration between doctors and nutritionists is inspiring. This Call offers you the opportunity to collaborate with writers.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Barbara Witkowska

gray DAYS

Cold weather can be lovely –in its season. But I crave blue skies. I get a few during winter’s grip; however, as March marches forward, I am growing intolerant of the gray days. My optimistic nature makes me want to find the beauty in the gray.  Imagine my delight to find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Barbara Witkowska with all his glorious shades of gray. from who i BECAME

We are a sum of our parts. You do not have to justify inspirational conflict or contradiction to me, EVER. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Alex Janvier finds influence in the history of oppression of the Dënesųłiné and Saulteaux (aboriginal Canada) as well as the work of Wassily Kandinsky (Russian) and Paul Klee (Swiss).  Tsa Tsa Ke K’e, below, will become a mosaic at Rogers Place Arena in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, and will measure 45 feet in diameter.  Here’s what Janvier has to say of his inspiration:

Tsa Tsa Ke K'e (Iron Foot Place) by Alex Janvier
Tsa Tsa Ke K’e (Iron Foot Place) by Alex Janvier

From everywhere, from the land, sky, stars, moon, sun, the universe. From earth, land, water, woodland, prairie, mountains, and people, some animals. From memory of ancient stories, from music, to include the voice of God and his created nature. From the sound of the birds chirping From native drum songs, pow-wow from the heart, rather than the intellect. From my parents. From my tribe, Dënesųłiné of Cold Lake, and of parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. From my Creator, The Chief of all Creators of the finest art. From the angels who have consistently have watched my life, and the development of art, that I do. From my own inspiration acceptance of who I have become. From love, to be who I am, and who I became.” — Alex Janvier

Enjoy 60+ years of work by Alex Janvier!

ARTIST of the DAY: S.L. Baker

another LANGUAGE

Process can be such an immersive experience.  My own work is focused, often figurative with meaning in the minutia.  I get lost in my own process, but I envy the abstracted expression of painters like S.L. Baker, today’s Artist of the DayThe inclusion of the ensō below perfectly captures the heart of this work and why I love it. (continues below)

Red Enso Landscape by SL Baker Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 24
Red Enso Landscape by S.L. Baker, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 24

“The work that appears on my canvases is a confluence of social, spiritual and familial concern.  Working mostly in acrylic and using my hands instead of brushes, a moment, an injustice, a joy becomes a color, a texture, a line, another language. I do not know the exact meaning other than I find gratitude within the process and believe that it says something.” — S.L. Painting
The work of MEGAN ELIZABETH reflects an attitude of experimentation, analysis of the elements of accident & a curiosity regarding the beauty created by the transparency & overlapping of ideas. Washes in the paintings, elements of spontaneity & use of collage are fundamental in many of my works. My inspiration comes from waterscapes, sunsets, bright colors in nature & the silhouettes created by extreme light or darkness. Much of my work has been derived from experiences living in Spain, travels in the Caribbean and in Europe & growing up on the east coast of the US.
