I spent my childhood as the family cook & server. I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook. I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own. Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner. I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table. CURATOR: Richard S. Chow is a fine art and documentary photographer that has exhibited in galleries and online across the United States and internationally. Chow’s solo show in downtown L.A. earlier in 2015, “Memories Redux”, brought lots of high praise. Chow has also placed twice in the prestigious Lucie Foundation International Photography Awards.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Create Now. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on the site.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer. L.A. Photo Curator does not handle any part of sales. There is no commission.

My chicken stock has been a little off lately. I make chicken stock at least once a week, and I thought I was doing everything the same, but all the dishes I make with stock of been a little off as well. The chicken soup & casseroles & pasta dishes were all missing something. Peppercorns. I ran out of peppercorns and used fresh ground pepper in their place. JUROR: A native of the South Bronx, Dr. Leslie King-Hammond was educated in the New York City public education system. After attending City University of New York and Johns Hopkins University she began teaching art history at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Later appointed Dean of Graduate Studies she retired in 2008 as Graduate Dean Emerita. During her storied career King-Hammond has served as the Founding Director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA, received a number of Mellon Grants, and a Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Other honors include the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture’s Chairperson of the Board and Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee; appointment to the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.; and project director for Ford/Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color at MICA (including Yale School of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts).

AWARDS: MTSU Arts Award $1,000, Dean’s Award $500, Department of Art Award $200, Award of Excellence $100, Up to 3 Awards of Merit $50 each.

Food oddities abound –from century eggs to snake wine. But I find the biggest food oddity is the waste of food in massive, organized food fights. How do you use tons of food to make a mess when it could be feeding someone? I don’t understand. I suppose that some make an argument that food art is also a waste; however, I think the difference in scale might be the defining factor. JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. His work has also been included in numerous nat’l & int’l group shows. His photographs are included in a number of private & public collections. He has been the recipient of various grants & awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his 2nd NY State Council on the Arts Grant.

I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. MEDIA: Sculpture suitable for outdoor installation: a) must be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, snow storms); b) must withstand high traffic environment; c) should take into consideration the safety of the audience & d) artwork must be durable & require limited to no maintenance. Art must be installation-ready.

NOTIFICATION: February 10, 2016

ENTRY FEE: Thru January 22, 2016, $35 for up to 3. Late entry, January 23-29, $45 for up to 3.

AWARDS: $3,000: Best of Show, $2,000: 2nd Place, $1,000: 3rd Place, $1,000: People’s Choice Award & $500: Two (2) Honorable Mention awards. In addition, all finalists whose works are installed will receive a stipend of $1,500 per sculpture—$750 upon delivery to the site and $750 upon removal*. The sculptures that are sold during the exhibition will be delivered by Dogwood Arts to the buyer at the close of the exhibition and there will not be a $750 removal stipend awarded to artists on those sold sculptures.

SALES: Artists may sell their work during the exhibition period. However, the work must remain on site for the duration of the exhibition. Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by Dogwood Arts who retains a 30% commission.

The curators and judges will select work based on the originality, uniqueness of the vision conveyed, quality of execution and how clearly the artist’s individual technique/style is presented in each work. The work can be expressed from realism to abstraction.
