ARTIST of the DAY: Jennifer Dipper

try a new PERSPECTIVE

It is just another day of the calendar, but January 1 brings out the worst of self-judgement & self-loathing in us all. New Year’s resolutions are rarely about self-fulfillment & more about internalizing the judgement of others –about fixing perceived faults of body image, guilty pleasures & consumer expectations. So every January 1, I just try, often in vain, to remember to live my life with eyes open, wide open, open with a renewed awareness of myself and the world around me, the people, the earth, and the food, of course.  When I came across this image by today’s Artist of the Day, Jennifer Dipper, I recognized this look. Gentle but fierce, a haze of lashes softening but not obscuring the world. Strength.

ARTIST of the DAY: Robin Antar

This is not just a season of mass consumerism, but a season of mass consumption.  As a Southerner, I am unceasingly amazed by how many holiday dishes include mayonnaise.  It is an embedded part of the culture.  There are less-than-playful, spiteful & angry debates, conversations & argument over brands.  I stand firmly on the side of homemade.  *Please note, all hate mail containing the word “Dukes” has been filtered to my junk mail box.  The work of today’s Artist of the Day, Robin Antar takes its own stand, intention or not. PROTEIN

Food challenges abound: Meatless Monday, Veggie Thursday & others.  I full believe in $5 Friday.  It doesn’t have to be Friday, but, well, alliteration.  I like the creativity required to feed my family of three for $5.  My “go to” used to be chicken quarters (75¢/lb), but chicken that cheap can be scary.  But, I can serve the best of eggs as protein, grass-fed, free-range, antibiotic free FRESH eggs and still have plenty of cash left over to round out the meal.  Fried rice & quiche are family favorites, but if you are not an egg eater, dried beans are fantastic (but require prep time).  This next Call is also a shockingly good value for $5 as well.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Greg Sand

CHRISTMAS future

I watched Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” again last night.  I think the familiarity of the story along with the endless tongue-in-cheek remakes and knock-offs have taken the edge of the concept.  But what if?  What if your life was absent of you?  The work of Greg Sand, today’s Artist of the Day, reminds me of the reality of that concept.  Every vintage portrait over which I have longed in consignment and thrift stores has met their end.  Sobering.  Another thoughtful display of empathy– empathy for those connected to these unknown souls. “The series Once Removed consists of antique portraits in which the subject is missing. In all of the images, only the photographer’s backdrop and chair–next to which the sitter once stood–remain. The photographs are now about the absence of the subject rather than about the subject itself. Hopefully the viewer ponders the removal of the person and concludes, given the obvious age of the portraits, that the subject is dead.

over a catastrophe which has already occurred.’

Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant.  But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades.  Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round.  The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly.  My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps.  She pulled it in  & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving.  So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies.  This next Call is looking for your perspective on flowers this winter.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Ellen Jewett

STRANGE and gentle

As the years go by, I have come to view the details with different eyes.   With people, I have a far greater capacity for empathy even without intimate knowledge of every detail.  But with art, I find myself captivated by the minutia.  I enjoy dissecting the elements.  The sculpture of today’s Artist of the Day, Ellen Jewett, keeps me busy for hours.  A cursory glance may reveal spectacular figurative work, but the individual elements offer tiny narratives to be combined into a more complicated world view.  Mesmerizing. CALL for ENTRIES: Water Banners

I am preparing to live my life with only a human washer of dishes.  We’ve spent years eliminating excess stuff, downsizing possessions & square footage. Re-training ourselves after years of ingrained longing for “more” has been tough.  Beginning Spring 2017, we will have limited access to water & power –only what we can produce or capture.  The dishwasher will be the toughest obstacle.  Because of the enormous amount of cooking we do, our dishwasher cycles at least once per day, and there is still a sink full of hand-washable items left.  Maybe the answer is a really deep farmhouse sink to hide the dishes left after I’ve met my hand-washing-insanity limit.  This next Call honors water conservation.  Maybe they have a solution…

“When I first started to work with collage (in 2012) I really got attached to the method. With collage I am allowed to work fast and the pictures I create are more likely a sketch of an idea then an in all details finished picture. I only use pictures from the Internet. So the online-voyeurism becomes an inspiration to me. In such a way my work grasps a larger ground. It becomes a debate about rights and licenses, about privacy and commons, about ownership and laws. The collages always oscillate between visual and legal borders.” — Julia Geiser

I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been.  I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon.  It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months.  In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time.  A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues.  Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help.  This next Call wants your perspective on blue.  Take a look…

Being both a visual artist and a professor, she has worked and taught nationally at visiting artist residencies & internationally in Ireland, Italy &France, earning opportunities to exhibit at many venues.

AWARDS:  Three monetary awards: Best in Show and two honorable mentions.

SALES:  Works will be for sale unless noted as NFS (not for sale) on the entry form.  ARC does not take commission on any work sold, but will act as a liaison for sales of the artists’ work.
