Learn more about Inner Travels from The Virtual Artist!up, up & TAKE AWAY

I put my kiddo on a plane, alone, bound for Texas, and as soon as he was settled into his seat, he texted me.  Before even taxiing down the runway, he wanted to know how to order lunch.  Ha.  He’s mine, for certain.  Luckily, airline food has gotten better and offers healthy, organic, less-processed options.  I’m impressed.  He was impressed. This next Call embraces travel too.  Food references optional…

backward & FORWARD

Gaining perspective requires your finding your place in the present day by looking BOTH backward toward the path traveled (or not) & forward to embrace possibilities.  When I came across this pair of portraits by today’s AotD, I found this idea beautifully illuminated. Ironically, Robison is primarily a plein air painter, which cannot be more rooted in the present.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kathleen M. Robison, offers a beautiful glimpse of Summer contemplation.  (continues below).

"White Scarf" & "Blue Sun Dress" (plein air oil painting) by Kathleen M. Robison
“White Scarf” & “Blue Sun Dress” (plein air oil painting) by Kathleen M. Robison

“Painted this oil painting of a girl who was looking away into the blue sky. The bright light on the scarf drew me in, so did the movement of her hair. Her attitude that day reminded me of the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’.” — Kathleen M. Robison

As memes mutate & shift — seeding & replicating in the minds of ever-growing numbers of people — their popularity & trending lifespan become signposts which define broader cultural moments. baked, not BLACKENED

The burning of food is the only constant in my house.  It isn’t all food, but it is always particular foods –pizza crust, croutons, toast & anything else that is just supposed to just brown on the edges.  I say, “don’t burn the pizza”& Jon huffs in slight offense.  Then, 10 minutes later mumbled cursing echoes through the kitchen.  “Burn the pizza?” I ask.  “Sorry,” he responds.  Then Laughter.  Every time.  It happens every time.  That’s what makes it funny.  This next Call wants to know about your comic relief, but don’t burn the pizza.  Take a look…

“The world is so full of stress and hardship that it seems difficult to retain a sense of balance.  Often, as a photographer, one seeks out projects that are politically based, be it the environment or a statement to raise public awareness.  For our collective consciousness, it seems critical that we stop and ‘smell the roses’.  Based on this sentiment, the orientation of this theme is to seek out some visual levity.  Everyone’s perspective is unique as is their sense of humor. These images can be choreographed or spontaneous but should convey a sense of humor. I am looking forward to sharing a good laugh (or chuckle) with everyone.” –from Mara Zalove

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

DEADLINE: May 26, 2016 (Midnight PST)

EXHIBITION:  June 5 – July 5, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3.  15% of artist fees go to the charity of the monthly curator (jewelsofyouth.org) as well as the first place winner’s charity.

CURATOR:  Mara Zaslove‘s passion for photography has allowed her to express herself in a visual conversation & has interwoven her view of the world with her life experiences. Primarily, Mara’s process tends to be spontaneous.  She has a curiosity about her immediate environment and expresses this by photographing subjects that capture her fascination.  It can be the mundane, atypical or traditional but she seeks to document a uniqueness particular to each subject.  Mara’s award winning work has been widely acknowledged including being represented by bG/BGart Gallery at Bergamot Station & Hale Arts Gallery in Santa Monica.  She was a finalist in the 8th Julia Cameron Award held in Berlin in 2016 as well as having her work included in the 5th Annual Exposure Award display at the Musee du Louvre, Paris-France in 2015 as a part of the Body Collection.

Food as medicine has been on my radar for a decade.  I appreciate the ability to attempt home remedies through food and supplements.  I am not suggesting it is easier, nor am I suggestion it is a solution for all ailments.  But, I am intrigued.  A family history of arthritis, combined with years of a slight addiction to towering high heels, has resulted in massive joint pain in one of feet.  Flair ups are completely manageable with a combination of tart cherries & massive quantities of vitamin C.  Drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy is now often treated by mainstream medicine with a ketogenic diet.  The collaboration between doctors and nutritionists is inspiring. The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing.  Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts.  Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food.  I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress.  My husband agrees.  And while salad may not be all about the girls, this Call is.
