I lamented to a friend about my having to buy frozen dinners to supplement my child’s homemade options due to scheduling conflicts, and that session of whining spun off into a whole other discussion about why we quit calling them “TV dinners”.  My friend optimistically believes it is because people, generally speaking eat in front of the TV less often.  However, I suspect it is because we eat FROZEN meals far more commonly than just in front of the TV.  I am grateful there are some better options out there. The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

For many, December consists of meeting after meeting with collages of people.  Images and memories laid over philosophy and politics and ultimately framed as a family member.  Pieces and parts, both good & bad.  Part fiction, part reality; the difference is hard to distinguish.  The work of Cecile Perra, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, mirrors that patchwork progenitor that each of ponders across the table.

Dairy isn’t everyone’s friend.  My child has struggled with it for years.  He loves it far more than it loves him.  To this day, nothing is better than seeing his FACE when he stretches warm cheese off a pizza or eats that first spoonful of ice cream.  People suffer for fashion and art.  Why not for the love of dairy?  This next Call wants to see all the faces of humanity, not just the dairy daze.  You know how I love portraiture…

I have been without power several times lately.  Between wildfires & 50-80mph winds, I have had to rethink a lot of meals.   While it is an occasional inconvenience for me, it is the reality of dinner for a lot of people every day of the year.  So this year, enjoy your holiday meal with gratitude & remember to find a way to help where you can, when you can, EVERY day of the year, not just on holidays.  This Call is inspired by the David Lang’s Pultizer Prize winning “The Little Match Girl Passion”, based on the Hans Christen Anderson story.  Be inspired…

AWARD: Group show. The event is a 3-venue, 3 night collaboration performance between Lycoming College & a professional vocal ensemble, which will show art based on the music of the performance created by high school and college students & professional/community artists who submit pieces.

SALES:  Work will be available for sale to patrons who come to the performances. These performances are given to raise money for two local homeless shelters, and to raise awareness about homelessness in these areas. Artists are free to donate their sales to these shelters, but you are not obligated to donate.  If work is for sale, please include price & contact information.

My efforts to downsize my kitchen continue.  I’ve always been partial to white dishes, so color doesn’t help.  I shy away from single use gadgets or trendy patterns.  So, I’m left with glass containers, stainless bowls & the occasional wooden spoon. So, I opted out of holiday celebrations this year.  I am not feeling particularly Grinch-y; however, it has been a sobering year, and I didn’t feel compelled to fake it.  As a result, I am wading through the unnecessary “cheer ups” & the non-stop recipes for snowflake-shaped confections. I think that it is that very sense of introspection about domesticity and gender that drew me to Carrie Mae Smith, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day.

It is root vegetable season again.  It isn’t all just potatoes and carrots.  Root veggies are one of my only opportunities to have fresh food all the way through the winter.  I’ve been preaching about turnip roots for years; try them as a substitute, if only in part, for mashed potatoes.  Or celeriac is delicious.  Rutabagas are divine, albeit stinky.  How about kohlrabi?  It isn’t actually a root vegetable, but it holds just as long in cool dry temps.  They are like savory comfort foods, minus the warm cheese.  This next Call invites you to delve into YOUR roots.  Take a look…

CURATOR:  Susan Spiritus has been a leader in the field of fine art photography for 40 years, opening the doors to her Southern California gallery in 1976 so that she could share her passion for photography with others.  For the past twenty years the Susan Spiritus gallery has participated in local art fairs including PhotoLA, the Los Angeles Art show, Photo San Francisco, Los Angeles Festival of Books, and most recently, Classic Photographs Los Angeles. She serves on the Board of Advisors for International Photography Awards (IPA) and the Center for Fine Art Photography (C4FAP).
