CALL for ENTRIES: Street Photography

Learn more about the Street Photography Prize from The Passporte!

CURRY from a cart

There are glorious benefits to living rurally, including quiet solitude and night-time darkness.  But, I’ve always admitted that there are detractions, many of them food related, from the long haul to the grocer and a lack of food diversity.  Currently, I really miss street food or living in a city where wanting a snack just means I have have to walk a few yards or a block from my front door to whichever vendor is occupying the corner today.  I miss it.  This next Call wants to see your best street impressions.  Don’t miss this chance…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Passporte for the Henri Cartier-Bresson Passporte Prize in Street Photography.  $25 entry & cash awards.   Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Flowers, Plants & Gardens

Learn more about the Flowers, Plants and Gardens exhibit from Art-competition net!aztec TEA

We move to our “clean slate” apartment in about 6 weeks.  It has a good-size front porch but almost no yard.  The only green in site is a decayed and crumbling stepped flower bed next to the driveway.  I don’t think I can really grow a lot of food, but I have a friend that says she can get me a cut of epazote, a Mexican herb that’s hard to find in these parts.  Maybe if I surround it with marigolds and citronella, I might be able to save it from the bugs & their furrier 4-legged neighbors.  This next Call wants to know about your flowers, plants & gardens.  This is a perennial favorite, ha…

“Travel has become an important component in my work as it allows me to observe and compare gradients of color, light & atmosphere in different geographic locations.” Victoria Veedell

I have my eye on a prize, of sorts, and I am able to keep focused on the prize by finding inspiration anywhere I can.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Victoria Veedell, suggests that inspiration can be found both around the world or in your own backyard.  Or, you could adopt Veedell’s work as your inspiration.  I am taking a trip to Shanghai via oil on canvas.  Join me…

COOKING in paper

I dislike washing dishes, just like everyone else.  I have had a dishwasher for the past 10 years, but I still try to be conservative in usage.   But as of June 1, we are downsizing to an apartment that does not have a dishwasher.  And, while I will still avoid disposables, like paper plates, I am a strong advocate of cooking “en papillote”.  Not only is it a great way to produce tender, flavor-infused dishes, it also produces one less dirty dish.  This next Call also extols the praises of working with paper. Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Tiny Monsters

Learn more about the Tiny Monsters exhibit from the FE Gallery in Sacramento, CA! gooseBERRIES

Pineapples are showing up in mass at every grocer right now.  I can’t eat enough to take advantage of the availability, so I was contemplating making jelly or jam.  As you may know, pineapple fights the jelling process, so you have to use nearly twice as much pectin to make it work –which defeats the purpose of buying on sale.  Maybe I can freeze the cleaned pineapple and wait for gooseberries come into season.  These little treasures have huge amounts of pectin and can be made into jelly without ANY additional pectin.  This next Call wants your little treasures, but they must be monstrous…

I am what I am, and this week, I am a spinach lover.  To be honest, I am a spinach lover every week, but this week I have had spinach quiche & spinach salad without a wilted leaf to be seen.  Because of the popularity of aquaponics and the number of artisan growers in my area, every day is spinach season for me (happy dance), but this next Call just has a few more days left.  Don’t miss this deadline…

MORE please

I have a complicated relationship with food.  I eat what I want, when I want.  I have a complicated relationship with moderation too. Food is at the very least a political one, and clearly a feminist one.  Diet culture is pervasive. Patriarchy is rampant in the food industry. Then there’s fat shaming, BMI calculations and food deserts.  This next Call wants your feminist perspective — food references not necessary.  Take a look…

I made a little party mix as finger food for my teenager yesterday.  It is his favorite snack, and I’m a sucker for the “please” of it all.  The reviews are in and while I got I got bonus points for substituting cayenne for garlic, apparently not including cashews is unforgivable.  Who knew something so small would make such a difference?  This next Call is counting on all things small.  Investigate for yourself…
