CALL for ENTRIES: 7th Nat’l Pastel

Learn more about the 7th National Exhibit from the Arkansas Pastel Society!iced PASTELES

My Spanish classes are coming along nicely although I am struggling with objective pronouns.  My food vocabulary expands easily and exponentially.  My favorite is pasteles.  Cognates are easier to remember, but some words just stick in the brain & roll off the tongue.  Pasteles = cakes.  This next Call is for pastels, not pasteles, but segues are hard.  It’s a stretch, I know.  If pastel is your media, this is a great show…

Check out this Call for Entries from Arkansas Pastel Society (Little Rock, AR) for 7th National Exhibit. This media-specific show offers $35 Entry, 40% commission & a great juror.  Take a look…

My three favorite restaurants are all in North Carolina featuring American, Spanish & Italian cuisines.  They are all within a few blocks walk of each other.  Is it the education system that produces the culinary prowess? Is it the city that attracts it the creative?  Is it the small farm specialization that inspires clever savory vision?  I don’t know, but this Call hails from the same state.  Investigate this show.

CALL for ENTRIES: Chasing Ghosts II

Learn more about the Chasing Ghosts II exhibit from Verum Ultimum Art Gallery in Portland, OR!spooky SWEET

One of my favorite holidays looms near — Halloween.  There are lots of treats I only make on holidays, and meringue cookies are always a Halloween request.  Years ago I made meringue “ghost” cookies, which are just meringue cookies with eyes of blueberries, chocolate chips or currants; everyone was hooked.  Now they’re expected, of course. Light, crispy, ghostly sweetness.  Traditions are funny sometimes.  This next Call is looking for your ghosts. Your depiction doesn’t have to be literal, and the media is wide open.  Don’t worry, I am not sending meringues…

Is memory a vital vehicle of expression for you?  Do you inadvertently honor or flee from something in your past through your work? “We All Had Lightening Rods” & “Nero Could Turn on a Dime” by Soteris Sam Roussi

“I have limitless problems to resolve and discoveries unimagined to uncover.” Soteris Sam Roussi

Inspiration is a stranger to the one not its own.  For some it’s divine.  For some it’s academic.  For some it’s nagging & persistent.  For me, it is fleeting, absent sometimes, for months.  Then, inspiration comes bounding back in multiples faster than I can create.  But today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Soteris Sam Roussi, has limitless problems to resolve.  Someone once told me to use my anxiety as fuel; that isn’t unlike inspiration as a problem to be solved.  I like it.

ARTIST of the DAY: Kristen Brown

Dissonant Frequencies (chalk pastel) by Kristen Brown!
Dissonant Frequencies (chalk pastel) by Kristen Brown

“I am interested in the idea of recollection & how time & moments can feel distorted if one fails to grab hold of any memory landmark.” Kristen Brown

My grandmother lived with Alzheimer’s; her mother lived with Alzheimer’s.  Every lost memory scares the wits out of me. Logically, I know that wasting my lucid years worrying about a feared eventuality of non-lucidity is just the most stupid waste of a lifetime, but some days it gets the better of me.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kristen Brown, brought me to tears.  It is that blurred perception of reality, that soft focus of memories just out of reach that she captures so well.  Thanks for the perspective.

CALL for ENTRIES: AbstrAction

Learn more about the AbstrAction exhibit at the Marin MOCA!PINEAPPLE ma pizza

I eat lots of pizza, an odd side result of my job as a performing musician.  Common menu offerings include lettuce-topped Mexican, Greek, thick-crust Sicilian, Californian, the New York slice, the ubiquitous pineapple Hawaiian, and of course, deep-dish Chicago style.  There are many others, but these are the standards.  I love how, outside the area for which they are named, they consistently have similar the toppings that aren’t always grounded in anything more than habit.  Did you know California-style always has sun-dried tomatoes? Do you know why? Me either.  Food stereotypes are funny & often well-intentioned, but odd & often very abstract.  This next Call wants the abstract, but don’t send them pizza.  The deadline looms…

“Struggle” (detail) by Sarah Quick

” . . . my pieces tend to be epic in scope, using all three modes of communication to create my narrative.” Sarah Quick

My days are full.  I am less busy, but more active.  I want to do everything, try everything, create everything, experience everything.  I feel like a constantly churning, epic state of movement.  It is good.  It is where I want to be, in the middle of chaos, both good & bad.  It is an experiential life.  It is shiny and new. Again. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Sarah Quick, conveys struggle on an epic scale.  We are never alone.

OPEN CALL: Greenshields Grant

Learn more about available Artist Grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation!the deepest CUT

If you want to learn to cook well, I recommend starting with knives.  Every dish is made more difficult with a dull knife.  I had a brief affair with being a chef that put me in cooking school for a year.  The first thing I had to buy was a full set of very expensive knives.  (My mother had mine monogrammed. No kidding. SO embarrassing.)  Fear not, you can start with just a couple of not-so-expensive knives.  Everyone starts somewhere.  This next Call is looking to help artists just making their start.  Need funding?
