My grocery bill is absurd.  I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles.  In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden.  I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard.  This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant.  As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds.  I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child.  I buy in-season, cost-conscious items.  I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu.  How are people without access to locally-grown produce options supposed to avoid eating processed food?  The economics of hunger are devastating.  This next Call is an excellent use of YOUR $25.  Take a look…

Intelligent Objects is an open call for those artworks that act as independent agents & explore the cross-section of analog & digital media. For thirteen years, Fifield was also Curator of New Media at the DeCordova. He is an independent curator of New Media with numerous projects in the United States and abroad.  Fifield has taught at a number of institutions on New Media subjects. He is adjunct professor at the Digital + Media program at Rhode Island School of Design.

AWARDS: Two artists will be awarded a joint exhibition at CAW in 2016.  All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.

I have grits for breakfast 3+ days per week.  I have a favorite brand of organic, non-GMO grits that never cease to inspire.  On a busy morning, it is scrambled eggs over the top of cheese grits.  The next morning, the refrigerated left over grits are cut into cakes that are sauteed and used as the base for Eggs Benedict.  This morning it was Charleston-style milk grits with a poached egg & chorizo.  There is no end to the independent spirit of this simple staple.  This next Call is an inspiration of grits proportions as well.  Take a look…

THEME:  Future Perfect.  What is Future Perfect? It is the new southern city, urban design for tomorrow in a technological environment, cars that drive themselves, plastic biology, thought-controlled machines, seeds that produce sterile offspring, invisible cities, roads that drain the sun, utopian daydreams, eminent domain, an electric imagination, drones, highly efficient minimalism, living architecture.  Future Perfect is what we will make it.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists with a connection to the Southeast United States.  It is up to each applicant to make an argument for a valid connection.

MEDIA:  ALL disciplines of art are acceptable: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, sound, video, installation, mixed-media, etc. Artwork can be pre-existing, but it must have a connection to the 2015 theme of Future Perfect. In the application each artist must describe how their proposed work ties into Future Perfect.

DEADLINE:  December 5, 2014

NOTIFICATION:  January 16, 2015

AWARDS:  The Indie Grits Film Festival is a program of the Nickelodeon Theatre, a non profit  with a tight budget; please mke an effort to hold down costs.  They will select 15-25 artists/collaborations.  Projects will receive $50 – $1000 with most being on the low end of that spectrum.

I haven’t had a trick-or-treater at my door in years.  I miss seeing cute kids in even cuter costumes.  I miss giving out chocolate, knowing it may be the only candy that doesn’t get thrown away later. But alas, I live in the mountains.  Not many people live in neighborhoods, and those that do have an “organized community,” don’t have walkable streets.  We buy 4-wheel drive vehicles because we actually need them.  Our kids go downtown and trick or treat on Main Street.  No joke. I am now officially one of those old codgers that complain about the price of potatoes to the grocery cashier and bitch about the prices of soft drinks to my waitress.  Ugh.  I cannot believe I have turned into THAT person, but I have.  My Dad would be so proud.  But, I don’t feel alone due to the number of artists I listen to lament the price of entry fees.  This next Call doesn’t have one.  Woohoo!

Check out this Open Call from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN). The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit. Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

They have no climate control, air conditioning or permanent heating system; please bear this in mind when submitting your work.  Projects by individual artists that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

Louis Singh says, “St Ives in the 1970s was a somewhat lazier place than today. Late morning deals were customarily made with cigarette in one hand and glass of sherry in the other. Back then my father had the Wills Lane gallery which ensured my mind was constantly flooded with images of the St Ives School as soon as my eyes had opened.

“When I was ten my parents opened the Beaux Arts gallery in Bath which continued to nurture these Cornish roots. These days with a sister gallery in London, minus the sherry, not much has changed. I busy myself by keeping the gallery from growing old by steering some youth and raw contemporary talent, towards its doors.”
