Don’t you just love it when anything goes? Like many parents, I’ve had to have the difficult conversation that included explaining why chocolate chip pancakes are an acceptable breakfast but chocolate cupcakes. As you might imagine, food conversations are hard for me. I tend to give in. You only live once. Cupcakes anyone? This next Call exemplifies anything goes. MEDIA: All media will be accepted including mixed media, Collage, Montage, Sculpture Digital art, Painting, Printmaking, and Photography. Don’t be afraid to try with 3-D art; they have exhibited vinyl records, papier mache fish, wood sticks, shoes, and even a pig jawbone. Any size, if you can stamp it and get it through the Post Office, it will show.

DEADLINE: September 1, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Anything goes, everything shows! Non-returnable. Their mail art show title says it all as ALL received submissions will be exhibited in the Courtyard Gallery, from September 15th to October 27th, 2012.

Humor is always appreciated. I stand accused of being naively optimistic. If that is true, it is because I live with a smile on my face. My husband and son think I’m funny–biggest compliment EVER. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

THEME: Humor and art have been infrequent partners at best. With both a philosophical interest in the nature of humor and its relationship to aesthetics, this exhibition invites artworks that may utilize a conceptual approach and are actually funny, occupying this middle ground between art and humor in ways that might be thought-provoking, absurd, or even just silly.

MEDIA: all work must be funny. if you make the curator laugh, chuckle, wryly smile, or have a genuine humorous reaction, then it’s included. If not, it’s not. Don’t worry: the curator has a very wide ranging sense of humor. except when it comes to Woody Allen movies which, for some reason, he just doesn’t get.

All work must be in analog form, nothing digital will be accepted; suggested analog forms include, but are not limited to: index cards, single sheets of paper, cassette tapes, small sculpture, airmail envelopes, 35mm slides, canned goods, Morse code and anything else that you might think of. But it must be analog. No zeros and ones.

All of the work must be small. Maximum size–one cubic foot (not one cubit foot). Minimum size–head of a pin.

All work must be signed. This also means that all work can be catalogued, so dates, dimensions, material, etc. must be either included separately with the entry or readily discernible. An online catalog of every object submitted will be published.

All work must be environmentally disposable. You can retrieve your work at the end of the show, or pay to have it shipped back, but it is expected that the vast majority of work will be trashed on the last day. They will provide the trash bags.

DEADLINE: My guess is sometime early to mid September since the work must arrive by the end of September.

CURATOR: Dr. Scott Contreras-Koterbay, associate professor, (Ph.D., St. Andrew’s University) specializes in Philosophy of Art and Contemporary Art. He also teaches Modern Art, Art History, Theory and Criticism, Research Methods for Art Historians, Special Topics: African-American Art and Russian Art.

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living. I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food. Isn’t it always with me? I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming. Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like. I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating. While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announces a Juried Art Competition with the theme “Figurative” and the gallery would like for all 2D artists (including photography) to send us your best interpretation of the theme “Figurative” by depicting the human form or human features. “Figurative” is considered to be figures, forms and faces.

ELIGIBILITY: Light Space & Time encourages entries from all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field.

MEDIA: All two dimensional media are eligible. They will accept art on this subject that is either representational or abstract, but please, do not submit any erotic art.

12 12 GALLERY announces an open call to all artists creating works on paper, the International Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper 2012. The exhibition juror, Richard Waller, Executive Director of University Museums, University of Richmond, will award up to $1000 in cash prizes.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Works on paper to be considered for the exhibition. Eligible works incorporate the use of any medium on paper, including analog and digital photography.

DEADLINE: May 4, 2012

NOTIFICATION: May 20, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $25 (US)for 3 images. Add’l images $5 (US) each, for up to 5 total

JUROR: Richard Waller is the Executive Director of University Museums, including the Harnett Museum, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center and the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature. He received his master of fine arts degree from Yale University after graduating from Mankato State University in Minnesota. He also received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Before joining the University in 1990, Waller worked at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for 19 years and taught at New York’s Parsons School of Design. He has been a curator, judge and organizer of many historical and contemporary art exhibitions and has written extensively on visual art.

AWARDS: Cash prizes up to $1000 will be awarded solely at the discretion of the exhibition juror. Recognition of work by Professor Waller may also be designated to the extent he deems appropriate. These designations may not include a cash prize.

SALES: All work must be for sale. 12 12 Gallery will receive a 35% commission.

Found Objects: (According to The Smithsonian Institution) “Found art, more commonly called found objects — in French, objet trouve — is a term used to describe art created from common objects not normally considered to be artistic. The idea behind found art is that the piece of art derives its significance from the context into which it is put. Found Art blurs the traditional lines of what is art and questions the very nature of art itself. Found objects are often used by artists and may include the repurposing of street signs, license plates, or bottle caps, use of recycled paper, or imaginative application of household items.”

ELIGIBILITY: All artists residing in the United States and Canada

MEDIA: The exhibition is held to showcase the works of fine art that have incorporated at least one or more found objects into their presentation. Any two or three dimensional submission following exhibition guidelines will be considered by the juror.

DEADLINE: August 24, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Sept. 23, 2011

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered. 1 or 2 entries $35 (MFA members $20). Additional four entries $5 each. Entry fees are non-refundable.

JUROR: Janet Maher has been a working artist for thirty-five years, and is an Associate Professor of Art at Loyola University Maryland. She works in a wide range of mixed media, and teaches courses that reflect her interests, such as: Collage, Assemblage and the Found Object; Book Arts and Artist Books; Digital Mixed Media; Printmaking (Relief, Intaglio, Screenprint, Lithography and Alternative Processes), as well as Drawing and Two-Dimensional Design. She has exhibited widely and her work is in numerous public and private collections.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000. Contributors and recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.

SALES: The MFA will retain 30% commission from sales.

The theme for this exhibit at Pop Revolution Gallery is environmental art.

What is environmental art?

The online resource greenmuseum.org characterizes environmental art as ever-evolving art that, in a broad sense, helps better our relationship with the natural world.

Pop Revolution Gallery is looking for work that goes beyond the traditional landscape as a celebration of nature. For inspiration and/or guidance Pop Revolution recommends you visit:

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists 18 years or older. All work must be original work. Students must not present work for consideration if assisted in any way in arrangement or execution. Artists accepted for the exhibition will be asked for an artist bio for display purposes.

MEDIA: Open to all media.

DEADLINE: August 27, 2011

NOTIFICATION: August 31, 2011

ENTRY FEE: An entry fee of $25 for the first entry, $12 for each additional entry. Up to 4 pieces can be entered in to the show. If sending digital files through email, files will be reviewed when payment is received, either through snail-mail or PayPal. *Editor’s Note: With the average show costing $35 for 3 images, the fee for this show is a little high. I would like for you to consider, however, this is a retail-oriented space which offers a higher likelihood that reasonably-priced work will sell.
