My diet has been less than ideal for the past month. I’ve been stress eating all the cheese and fried food I can get my hands on lately, and surprise, I’m feelin’ kinda crappy. I started this week on a positive note though. I’m turning over a new leaf this week, well lots of new leaves — spinach leaves, among other foods that support health and uplift my mood. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to all* media that can be represented as a digital image / photograph. The elevator doors measure 36” wide x 80” high, which translates into a 1:2.2 ratio. (Portrait orientation.) Images that are more than half as wide as they are high may be cropped to fit the available space.

THEME: Three images will be selected, one for each elevator door in the Cultural Center’s Education Wing. The images, provided as high resolution digital files, will be reproduced on material to be affixed to the elevator doors for one year.

DEADLINE: May 4, 2018

NOTIFICATION: May 18, 2018

ENTRY FEE: $20 for 1, $5 for ea. add’l.

AWARDS: Each artist will receive a $250 stipend and acknowledgement with contact information at the site of the installation.

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping. It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag. A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford. Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy. But with a that single damn-the-consequences pastry, I felt the heart flutter that says he’ll stick for another twenty. Some of the best things come in, or on, paper just like in this next Call. Wong has widely exhibited his work in paper, books & installations since 1975 at museums & galleries including Neuberger Museum, Plains Museum, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts, and Dieu Donné. He has conducted papermaking lectures and workshops including: NY Library, Haystack, Penland, Banff, Oxbow, PBI, UArts-Philadelphia, UA-Tuscaloosa, Columbia College-Chicago, Morgan Conservatory-Cleveland

AWARDS: $1,300 in prizes –two $500 prizes & two $150 prizes.

I can’t imagine how many times I have written the words “I love goat cheese”. It is easy for me to for to write these posts and reveal my food soul and forget that people READ these posts. But when I give career development seminars, I have readers that show up (thank you) and have conversations with me about food that remind me that people know way too much about what I eat, ha. Recently at a seminar about branding yourself as an artist, I had someone bring me goat’s milk soap since they couldn’t keep goat’s milk cheese cold. ♥ This next Call doesn’t have a lot of requirements, but one of them is that your design must include a goat. No, I’m not kidding.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?
