CALL for ENTRIES: Postmarked 2012

For many years, inmates from around the country wrote to the Prison Library Project, and they were amazed by the artwork that accompanied requests for books. These beautiful illustrations were their inspiration for a mail art exhibition and fundraiser.

Postmarked was developed eight years ago for the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, which sends books free to prisoners in the U.S. upon their request.  Providing education and opportunity to learn about mail art, view new and established mail artists’ works, and to participate in the experience of creating and sending mail art. Now in its 8th year, this exhibition is one of the largest in California.

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show!ELIGIBILITY: Open to all.

MEDIA:  Mail art of any size and medium. ONLY the side with the official USPS Postmark/barcode will be displayed. Your mail art may be painted, stamped, collaged, printed, and/or otherwise decorated or constructed. It may be any shape and size that will go through the mail and receive an official postmark.

Your submission may get worn or torn through the mail, but the handling process is an important part of the theme. Only the side with the postmark can be displayed, due to space limitations, but the art doesn’t have to be limited to that side. You may include any message inside the envelope, which will be opened only by the person who purchases the art envelope. You may submit more than one piece… and begin sending now!

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show!DEADLINE: Entries must be postmarked by September 30, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: None

WHY SUPPORT the PLP? “Rehabilitation was at one time a stated goal of the prison system. Today, funding for most educational and rehabilitation programs, including prison libraries, has been cut or completely eliminated. It is a distressing fact that today’s U.S. prisons are increasingly about punishing people and warehousing human beings, not about, rehabilitation, or education.”

“This is where PLP steps in. We believe that everyone deserves access to literature and educational materials, including people trying to work towards social change, self-empowerment or rehabilitation within the incarceration system.

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show! The U.S. has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, but more than a quarter of the world’s prisoners.

Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, programs like ours are one of the few options available to these individuals.” –from the PLP website.

Funny Food: 365 Fun, Healthy, Silly, Creative Breakfasts by Bill & Claire Wurtzel HAHAHAHA…

Humor is always appreciated. I stand accused of being naively optimistic.  If that is true, it is because I live with a smile on my face.  My husband and son think I’m funny–biggest compliment EVER.  I appreciate humor in food as well.  Bill & Clair Wurtzel’s Funny Food is such a great approach to healthy breakfast.  I unabashedly recommend it. This next Call is all about tickling your funny bone.  I unabashedly recommend it too…

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

THEME:  Humor and art have been infrequent partners at best. With both a philosophical interest in the nature of humor and its relationship to aesthetics, this exhibition invites artworks that may utilize a conceptual approach and are actually funny, occupying this middle ground between art and humor in ways that might be thought-provoking, absurd, or even just silly.

MEDIA:  all work must be funny. if you make the curator laugh, chuckle, wryly smile, or have a genuine humorous reaction, then it’s included.  If not, it’s not. Don’t worry: the curator has a very wide ranging sense of humor. except when it comes to Woody Allen movies which, for some reason, he just doesn’t get.

Learn more about ETSU online! All work must be in analog form, nothing digital will be accepted; suggested analog forms include, but are not limited to: index cards, single sheets of paper, cassette tapes, small sculpture, airmail envelopes, 35mm slides, canned goods, Morse code and anything else that you might think of.  But it must be analog.  No zeros and ones.

All of the work must be small.  Maximum size–one cubic foot (not one cubit foot).  Minimum size–head of a pin.

All work must be signed.  This also means that all work can be catalogued, so dates, dimensions, material, etc. must be either included separately with the entry or readily discernible.  An online catalog of every object submitted will be published.

All work must be environmentally disposable. You can retrieve your work at the end of the show, or pay to have it shipped back, but it is expected that the vast majority of work will be trashed on the last day.   They will provide the trash bags.

FEATURED ARTIST: Grant Penny

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!ROUNDS
of goodness

The $2 Art Contest is has evolved over the past few years. I went from sorting good work from bad to sorting good work from great work.  Lately, I am sorting great work from great work that would be more appropriate at a different time of the year. It is getting harder and harder, but I am appreciating both the work and the honor of getting to review the work more and more as time goes by.   I always appreciate simplicity when I don’t have to actually live it.  Sometimes it is the absence of something (or the absence of many, many of things) that makes you notice the details.

This month’s artist has stripped down scenes and objects to focus on the line, continuity and impact of the parts. Like a perfect roundness of a glazed donut, Grant Penny wallows in the fatty decadence of simplicity. His artwork has a sort of simplified retro elegance without a true retro reference–but rather a nod to modernity. Perfection.

Learn more about Featured Artist Grant Penny!FEATURED ARTIST:
Grant Penny

Grant Penny grew up in central N.C. (Sanford).   His mother, an artist, art teacher and graphic designer,  gave Penny the solid foundation in the arts that fuel a lifelong passion. He and his wife, Carly, (then girlfriend) would regularly visit Asheville, NC for the occasional long weekend and…

“We knew that if we didn’t live here we would look back in 20 years and regret it.”

They have called Asheville home since 2003 and haven’t regretted it for a moment. Penny reports the city is full of genuinely good, happy people. Great food. Great art.  Since moving to Asheville, he got married now has daughter Emaline.   The recent addition to the family is actually the inspiration for my his new paper airplane series. Originally a theme of “anticipation” evolved into something different as time went by.  A small paper airplane piece now hangs in his daughter’s room, the message being:

as if on a wire by Featured Artist Grant Penny!“I wish for you to soar in life… but don’t take it too seriously.”

Talk to me about inspiration.  Most of us can see the beauty in a fern frond, branch, a flower.  But you have found beautiful inspiration in traffic lights and power lines. Talk to me about that.“I find my inspiration in “simplicity.” It’s often a curve or a line that gets my attention. For example the powerline pieces you’ve mentioned – It’s that never ending line that draws me in visually. It just keeps going and going and going. I follow it with my eyes as I travel down the road.

“Often there is flip side to the visual. Something that amuses me. I look at  powerline/telephone cables and think about what those silly looking, seemingly hap-hazard wires hoisted up on big sticks are doing there? They’re doing simple things – warming the water for a bath, connecting a phone call between a grandmother and a child, keeping my beer cold.”

broadway st by Featured Artist Grant Penny! What do you consider your media? Are these pieces strictly collage or do I note a touch of photographic work?  There even seems to be the appearance of silk screen.  Explain.“My media is strictly paper – specifically ‘Lokta”’paper which is hand made and dyed in Nepal.  I do shoot photos to create the composition. But what you see in the finished pieces is cut paper. I coat the pieces with layers of acrylic medium which gives some texture to the surface (and really brings out the rich saturation in the papers).”

Clearly, graphic design has a strong influence in your work.  Can you appreciate what it brings to your sensibility despite your efforts to produce hand-made work to specifically separate yourself from  your graphic design? “My graphic design background plays into my work especially when it comes to composition. I tend to leave large expanses of blank space which certainly comes from years of doing layouts where I needed to balance images with content. I really enjoy those empty spaces. I tend to crop the subjects in my work so that you can’t see it entirely. I find it makes it more interesting. More intimate maybe.”

where we make our inside jokes by Featured Artist Grant Penny! You know we have to talk about food. What is your favorite? “All things PORK. What a magical animal. Bacon, Ham, Pork Belly, Ribs, BBQ … On a radio show, maybe 10-12 years ago, I heard of a specific Spanish ham that wasn’t even available in the U.S. at the time–called ‘Jamón ibérico.’  It’s made from free-range Black Iberian Pigs raised on a diet of acorns.  I never forgot about this amazing sounding ham for all these years.  Just a few weeks ago I finally had the pleasure and experience of tasting this most wonderful pork delicacy. Oh. My. God. Drop your fork delicious.”  For those of you that are regular readers, you’ll note that this seems to be a trend–the love of pork–amongst Featured Artists.  Interesting

ruby on the right by Featured Artist Grant Penny! What about snack foods? “My current favorite snack is freshly made Guacamole on a salty chip with a nice cold beer.”

So, what’s coming up next for you? “I’ve been going after (and getting in) a few shows lately. Tip of the hat to your blog for wonderful advice and encouragement. I will continue to pursue more opportunities to show my work.  The main and constant focus is Work Work Work! If I don’t get ample time in the studio the quality of everything else around me suffers.” Happy to have nudged you along the way.

Thank you, Grant for reminding us of the beauty in simplicity–from a cold beer to paper airplanes. You have reminded to not let life wash over me in a clutter of the wholeness of it all but to celebrate the simple details.

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living.  I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food.  Isn’t it always with me?  I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming.  Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like.  I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating.  Now, I live a labor-instensive, farmers market going, whole food preparing, canning and preserving sort of life.  Is it easy?
