JUROR: Karen Kunc received her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1975, and her MFA from Ohio State University in 1977. She is internationally known for her large scale, elaborately colored, abstract woodcut prints.

Kunc currently serves as Cather Professor & Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she has taught since 1983. The Willa Cather Professorship was established in 2001 by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to recognize faculty members with the rank of full professor who have established exceptional records of distinguished scholarship or creative activity.

Kunc has had one-person exhibitions at dozens of galleries throughout the United States and in the Czech Republic, Japan and Finland. Her works have been shown in more than 350 exhibits in the United States and 25 nations. She has taught workshops around the world, and has lectured as a visiting artist to over 200 institutions.

It is characterized by local, fresh ingredients and foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast with special attention paid to presentation–delicious & beautiful. But why leave out the butter? And, if it is from local, grass-fed cows, even better. Can’t we just learn to play well with others? Today I spied organic alphabet soup in the grocery store. There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words. And, I don’t believe anyone is REALLY teaching their children to read with soup. So do we really need to communicate with food, literally, or am I just a huge hypocrite for constantly preach about the transformative & communicative power of food? Okay, I’m a hypocrite, ha. Butcher is a master at portraying emotional and spiritual content as visual compositions. In his paintings he explores space, light and subject matter as metaphors in a dialog.

Claudia Seymour is a masterful still life painter in oil and pastel. She is a member of prestigious organizations such as Allied Artist of America, CT Pastel Society, and Audobon Artists. Claudia is an experienced juror and an active member of the art community. She has served as president of the Salmagundi Club in New York City for the past six years. She has exhibited in over 150 juried national and international exhibitions.

AWARDS: Over $3000 in cash awards

I prefer thought-out, composed meals with true intention. But, let’s face it…that doesn’t always happen. Today, my lunch included two olive & cream cheese stuffed pieces of celery, a deviled egg, a pickled beet, two slices of fresh tomato and two pickles. The only thing composed was the beautiful square plate. Truly, it was a collage of anything I could find that didn’t have to be cooked. This next Call wants your collage, AND they want it square.
