I have such reservations about corn but none about corn pudding.  We had it for dinner tonight.  I always think of corn as hailing from Iowa.  (I am clearly like a marketing sponge.)  But as I spent hours on the back roads of Ohio last year trying to avoid the nightmare that is I-75 South, I drove through miles and miles and miles of corn fields, intersected only by the occasional two-lane or gravel road.  Dazzling. I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective.  Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible.  Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you.  So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible.  So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one.  Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg?  Because they are yummy? Doubtful.  But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try.  But coconut?  Green or furry, how did someone look at a coconut and say, “let’s eat one”?  Abstract.  This next Call is also purely abstract.  Take a look…

Bugs, both lady & stink, invade my house every winter.  I can only assume their numbers increase wildly due to the need to seek warmth.  The ladybugs that everyone adores are different that the erratic, mean-spirited beetle variety that haunts the windows & lampshades in my home.  And the stinkbugs, oh my.  Did you know that National Geographic wrote an article a few years ago suggesting that these odoriferous creatures add an apple flavor to sauces?  Thanks, but no. I’ll stick with the orchard original.  This next Call is the only place I want to see swarms. How about you?

Cooking is a constant exercise in recycling & upcycling in my house.  A whole chicken will provide a dinner, chicken salad for lunch, broth for future soups, scraps for breakfast hash or lunch tacos plus a treat or three for the pup.  My least favorite of all these is the original chicken dinner.  The upcycled & recycled varieties are always superior, just like the media for this next exhibit.  Never have an empty plate by expanding your menu by incorporating what you already do…

She currently sits on the boards of the environmental organization the Reuse Alliance and the arts organization Pentacle.

In addition to being the Editor of AAAD, I spend a considerable amount of time consulting with artists individually on branding their work, unifying their message & the philosophical packaging of their work for consumption.  Technology is vehicle that allows delivery of work that is complete in contrast with that very technology.  I appreciate the push to expand my knowledge, to remain relevant, to drag a few artists wit me. Food is so personal.  A client recently asked if I had any dietary restrictions so that she could be prepared for our branding consultation that will span a lunch time.  I’m allergic to parsnips, which is rarely an issue, and wheat which is always an issue.  Always.  Her response?  We grow our own heirloom corn varietals from which we grind our own corn meal for cornbread.”  Food is PERSONAL, and this next Call couldn’t be any more personal.  Your support will determine the growth of this opportunity.  Please make it personal for you too…

Trained in classical, French culinary techniques, Gibson created AAAD as a food-themed resource to motivate artists to create their own community, standards & artistic opportunities. SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless marked NFS. A commission of 30% will be taken on all sales. Unsold artwork will be returned and payment for sold artwork will be made within 30 days of the close of the exhibit.

Fresh fruit is still my favorite dessert.  I will take a bowl of berries over chocolate 9 times out of 10.  The only thing I miss is the fat content, the luscious mouth feel.  But, my husband has solved that problem with scratch-made whipped cream, heavy on the vanilla, light on the sugar.  There’s no going back. In a Walmart world where most everything can be had for $10 or less, how do we avoid reinforcing a culture that regards everything is disposable?  How do we discourage casual consumerism and reinforce long-term responsibility of ownership?  Value.  Buy what you LOVE.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Emily Shane upcycles much-loved cast-offs of days past.   I LOVE the texture AND how illustrative this work is of falling down the reading “rabbit hole”. We’re on snow day THREE here in the Smokies.   I love snow.  I love lots of snow, in fact.  But, the stark isolationism associated with snow is not lost on me.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Anastassia Elias seemed the ideal person to illustrate this issue.   It is a very small world …and getting smaller everyday. never ALONE

One of the joys of editing AAAD is the artists that I meet. Some seek advice or publication, but most often, they seek connection.  Creativity is often isolating, but all of you have taught me that an art community is where and what and who you make it. Today’s Artist of the Day, David Marinos, will be 18 years old tomorrow.  My birthday wish for David is that he not know artistic isolation although his work already displays an understanding.
