Waves (cardboard, fabric, enamel & acrylic) by Grace Summanen
“Waves” (cardboard, fabric, enamel & acrylic) by Grace Summanen

“We need to see the magic that surrounds us.” Grace Summanen

Some days it is easier to see the bad and harder to see the good.  That doesn’t mean that the bad is more prevalent, it just means you may not be well equipped to see it that day.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Grace Summanen, uses the most common of found objects and supplies to create her own magic.  The result is hypnotic.

Peanut butter & jam used to be my go-to comfort food, back before wheat allergies took my family down with a thud.  So I’ve been trying out abstractions of the PB&J.  Peanuts & raisins, dried cranberries & sunflower seeds, and my favorite, pumpkin seeds and raspberries.  It is the same comfort, but without the structure.  I’m a fan.  This next Call wants to test your comfort with abstraction.  Take a look…

Elemental #1 (encaustic, gauze, wire, rust, shellac on paper, dim var) by Megan Klim

“This body of work speaks to simplicity,  the inherent beauty of the materials…” Megan Klim

In preparation for an international move in 2018, we are downsizing to a one bedroom apartment (approx. 450 sq. ft) from a 2 bedroom cabin (850 sq. ft.).  As we purge, I find that I make decisions on whether things stay or go based on their usefulness, simplicity & aesthetic, in that order.  The simple beauty of the work of today’s Artist of the Day, Megan Klim speaks to me.  It is a beautiful calm.

Find a calm space with the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Megan Klim!

ARTIST of the DAY: Kathy Cantwell

Hidden Life of Stripes 17, encautic, by Kathy Cantwell
Hidden Life of Stripes 17 (encaustic) by Kathy Cantwell

“They wait to be observed. In their numbers,
they are a community of stripedom, standing
together to make their voices count & possibly
overtaking the viewer with their strength.”

Kathy Cantwell

Unlike many curators & jurists, I really love reading artists’ statements.  I live to consume them separately so as not to influence my perception of the work.  I am drawn to geometrics, so when I came across the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, encaustic painter Kathy Cantwell, I was intrigued by the “why” behind the stripes.  I never expected to walk away with a perspective on humanity, on how we are better… together.  Thank you, Kathy.

The low temp was 14°F at my house last night; my Seattle friends think I’m a wimp.  They can think what they want.  I will be sipping from an umbrella-topped glass, if only in my head.  This next Call is my current co-conspirator.  Escape with me…

While giving a seminar on pricing artwork last week, someone asked me who AAAD’s readers are.  “Foodie artists, I suppose” to which she replied, “I like to eat, does that count?”.  Of course it does.  I’ve had days, weeks & months that I have unintentionally boycotted cooking, recipes or any ingredient more complicated than cereal.  Seriously, folks, just eat.  Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t –both art & food.  If your art is ready, this next Call is a great next step…
